out of the bay area first in the north. by 10:00 a few lingering showers in the south bay. highs in the 60s, partly cloudy skies. we'll see a return of the sun into mop nday as well. look at the rest of the week. liz. >> thank you, lisa. happening today san francisco niners will head to miami one week before taking on the chief in super bowl liv. a live look here at san jose international airport. foggy morning where the team is expected to board a bus before a charter flight. the cheerleaders will help give the niners a proper sendoff. of course abc 7 news will be there to bring you football fanfare. years ago there was a one-week gap between conference championship and super bowl. it was a mad scramble for players and coaches to get ready. now a two-week is standard. in miami with a preview of what's to come this week. >> hi, everybody.

chris alvarez here in miami for super bowl week between the 49ers and kansas city. this is the bye week. kansas city if they had to play tomorrow, they would be ready. >> it's nice. if we have to play sunday, we'd be ready. any time you go through a week like this, go through a normal week and not have a game on sunday. nice to have a long plane ride and go through the whole week. we'll start over monday and tuesday where we don't have to reinvent the wheel. we know we have. we have a week of tape where we clean stuff up and take stuff out. some more stuff come to us and put stuff in. >> both teams set to arrive kansas city around 4:40 eastern time. san francisco after 7:00 here local time. one of the first things you'll notice when you get off the plane, it is warm here. a lot of people in shorts and t-shirts. there was stuff we saw in the airport. a tropical shirt that might be

purchased, pretty cool. all set to go from the airport across this whole area getting ready for that game. with the 49ers, chris alvarez, abc 7 sports. not a bad assignment. 49ers made time to meet with fans in the area. emanuel sanders signed autographs yesterday at the dick's sporting goods on blossom hill road. a huge crowd and people started lipg up hours before sanders showed up. similar to friday when we saw them. there was excitement to see one of the niners stars. >> we got our jersey signed. woo-hoo. he manual is great. they are going win. >> great to see emanuel sanders. he was a great acquisition. he didn't have a bye this year. it was worth it. it's amazing to have him on the team. >> in my mind, going out to win. obviously the super bowl is a big event.

at the same time we're going out there to handle business so we're trying to win. >> a few fans showed up with denver broncos jerseys, a team sanders won a super bowl with. pretty cool. wouldn't be the super bowl without the lombardi trophy delivered to the winner of the game. fedex delivered it to miami, florida. no better hands to grab it than a receive, boldin. he played for the 49ers but has a super bowl at their expense. he was a member of the baltimore ravens that beat them in '97. >> no playing in three years, i would love to see them bring home the sixth championship but i would also love to see andy reid win it. he's a great coach. i got lined up against on the field many times. >> a trophy named for the namous coach of the green bay parkers.

a free pass. >> the district attorney's attorneys office is dropping charges against jamaica hampton seen here in police body cam videos fighting with two police officers on the morning of december 7th. >> his charging decision to not charge mr. hampton for feloniously assaulting my members, not only caused my members and every law abiding person who comes to san francisco. >> but the district attorney says this is not what's happening. oppose friday they decided to withdraw the complaint against hampton. he says it's not dropping charges. >> an important difference between dismissing the case and with drawing the complaint. >> with drawing the complaint. if you're between the lines that's exactly what you're doing, dropping charges. >> he says it's not a decision one way or another whether they will be charging hampton. a decision to wait to charge

hampton. >> the decision we made is frankly in the best interest of the officers. they are both being investigated right now by our internal investigation bureau into their use of the firearms in the incident. it would be improper and unfair to put them on the witness stand to testify against mr. hampton while they are being investigated for their use of force. until both investigations can be completed, we are going to withhold making a final decision about how to charge with what. >> internal investigations by t it's standard protocol. they have not released a statement about the decision. chief of police bill scott did send a message to his officers indicating boudin informed him about this withdrawal. i want you to know we're committed to working with the d.a. to see justice is done in this case for our officers. he said he called the chief and officers involved directly to explain his decision.

in the newsroom, abc 7, lauren martinez. police arrested a man they suspect killed a woman. they called to check on a woman. he said he had not spoken to the woman for hours. when officers arrived they found the woman dead with stab wounds. they identified the caller as this man, peter rodriguez. investigators says he's the killer, they believe he's the killer. the relationship of the two is still under investigation. new developments in the search for a suspect wanted in a deadly hit-and-run in berkeley. police say they know who they are looking for and he is, quote, armed and dangerous. luz pena spoke to the police about the investigation. >> we consider the suspect armed and dangerous. >> the search continues for manslaughter suspect alexander mcgee of oakland. >> officers attempted to arrest

the suspect in oakland but he was able to elude capture. we did recover the vehicle that was used in the fatal hit-and-run. >> monday at 10:30 a berkeley police officer saw mcgee punch a woman in the head in a parked vehicle on 6th street. when officers approached he made a u-turn while the woman inside the vehicle screamed for help. >> police say the suspect drove the vehicle onto the sidewalk and hit a woman sleeping right here. neighbors confirm she's homeless. >> a homeless person cold and sleeping on the ground. she lived on the streets and she died on the streets. >> candles and flowers left to remember the 58-year-old victim. two days prior to the hit-and-run, she planned to help the woman. >> you were saying when you saw her first, you thought i'm going to ask her to move out of the way. >> i did. i thought, why is she laying

there. she should be more inland maybe in an area that's covered somewhe somewhere, and i was too late. >> mcgee has several arrests from police departments in the bay area. >> outstanding warrants from contra costa sheriff's department for flown vading and burglarily. >> as for the woman inside the vhicle screaming for help, police did not give specifics about her. >> domestic violence, could be human trafficking as well. we know this was a violent assault. >> berkeley police hopes these photos lead to his arrest. in berkeley, buzz pluz pena, ab news. san francisco welcomed in the lunar new year. dragons, drummers and fireworkers took over the streets of china town for the first day of the year of the rat. the festival celebrates the beginning of the new year on the traditional lunar calendar. mayor london breed and other

. welcome back. there is a case of the deadly coronavirus in orange county. center for disease control and prevention told a traveler from wuhan, china, has tested positive for the outbreak of coronavirus. that patient in the hospital and in good condition. there are two other confirmed cases in the u.s. in illinois and washington state. this is a live look at sfo. the u.s. consulate on tuesday will be evacuating its staff and some private citizens on a charter flight from wuhan to san francisco. stated there would be a limited number of seats. those most at risk of coronavirus got priority. so far the virus has killed 56 people and infected nearly 2,000. diane acevedo has the latest from new york. >> reporter: the potentially deadly coronavirus is on the rise inthe u.s.

they first confirmed a patient in seattle hospitalized after returning from wuhan, china, the epicenter of the outbreak. on friday a second case in chicago. the patient in her 60s had also visited wuhan. >> she had cold-like symptoms, shortness of breath, fever and many times would present like a cold. >> cdc testing travelers at five u.s. airports concentrating on those returning from wuhan. >> it's important as an opportunity to educate returning travelers about the potential risk of coronavirus. >> concern over a large scale outbreak in the u.s. is minimal. >> the thing that you need to be watching out for is sustained person-to-person transmission. >> with confirmed cases in at least 13 other countries or territories, officials in china, including president xi jinping met on saturday to discuss how to halt the spread. chinese authorities are also canceling many lunar new year events, closing major tourist

francisco public works. >> this transformation is really going to make it easier for people who walk up and down market street or people who ride bicycles or people who use public transportation. >> what about people who ride and drive cars. >> people who ride and drive cars has been the problem. >> bridget phillips who lived in san francisco all her life feels like the closure is the problem, not people like herself who drive. >> it doesn't make getting around san francisco even crazier than it is now. are they going to close more roads off. >> some don't see it as restrictive. >> i don't see it as a terrible thing. there's plenty of side streets. people can walk or take a lyft if they need to get there. >> what's the closure. >> market street is out of whack with how it's used and how we want it to be used. >> the supervisore most of the car closure runs through his

district. according to smta it's home of pedestrian and bicycle collisions. >> safety is a huge motivating factor here. but also the potential and power of having, you know, a thorou thoroughfare like so many cities around the world where you can walk, take transit, bike. we hope it reinvigorates the street. >> we'll check with lisa, starting with a rainy morning. >> live doppler 7, you can see the front pushing into san jose. we'll go in for a closer view and heavier rain in hills around milpitas, 880 santa clara, 680, north capital avenue also very wet. to the north the rain is ending around 680. showers around fremont, pleasanton looking wet. as we go to the north bay and peninsula, not much going on here. a few scattered showers. we'll continue to see the rain move into the mountains with numbers in the upper 30s to near 40s. it's a mild system.

here is a look at it as it pushes across the bay. a couple more hours of this, particularly in the south bay, and then we'll dry out and turn partly cloudy. 40s mount diablo, dublin, 55 san francisco, novato and santa rosa. a look at exploratorium where rain will be ending looking for partly cloudy skies this afternoon. dry and mild with temperatures climbing this week well above average. aso with the rain, we have some fog, 4 mile visit, half moon bay, petaluma, otherwise as the front moves through that should help clear out the fog. we'll be looking at pretty nice second half of the day. this morning level one with light to moderate showers. less than .1, we've seen .4 and a couple hundredths. another tenth throughout the

morning hours. very little. as we do through the next several hours, it is in the south bay. it pushes through and we'll have lingering rain by 10:00. by 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon, we're partly cloudy and temperatures should be pretty comfortable as we climb through the upper 50s to low 60s. northwesterly winds on the coast making it feel breezy to gusty at times. 58 in vallejo, 60 in fremont, 60 palo alto, low 60s in san jose. numbers just a few degrees above average but with northwesterly winds it will feel kind of cool out there. overnight tonight we'll drop off a little more into the low 40s in the north bay and some patchy fog, low 40s down around the valley as well. accuweather forecast, level 1 ending this morning. rtly cloudy, mid-50s to low 60s. partly cloudy for monday. should be a nice day. then we'll see the gradual warm-up, maybe a slight chance of showers late monday into tuesday. otherwise, dry skies, sunny and milder.

good morning, everyone. we're going to start this half hour with a look at the weather. here is meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> good morning. a level 1 system pushing through the bay area taking the rain with it. it will be out of here by the next few hours. showers have been moderate in the north bay, light in the south bay. we picked up about a quarter to a half inch of rain well to the north. as we look at live doppler 7 you'll notice the hills of the east bay here is where we have the higher returns here. the rain rates picking up. milpitas, light showers through san jose and campbell. further to the north, some light showers, a few sprinkles around livermore. the rest of the bay, well, that front is over with. we'll see a few scattered showers as sowers. as we look at 7:00, temperatures in the 50s. light rain around the bay. near 60.

it's cooler and we're beginning to see partly cloudy skies. in the afternoon a few low 60s and looking at a chillier night tonight. a dry start to your workweek. the beginning of february, it's not going to feel like it. i'll explain coming up. >> thank you, lisa. now to the race for 2020 and our new political series chasing california, which explores issues and strategies leading up to the presidential primary in march. new episodes drop every week. last week i spoke exclusively with presidential candidate and former new york mayor michael bloomberg. went behind the scenes in california with michael tubs and jerry brown. just days ago he was endorsed by mayor london breed. what's the strategy this late in the game. here is a portion and a conversation i had with abc contributor. >> welcome to california. hig the trail.

you're ready. >> hitting the trail, ready, but it's raining here. i was told weather in california is always beautiful. >> we're back stage with former new york mayor michael bloomberg. >> the first thing we've got to do is get rid of donald trump. if that isn't a good investment with my money, i don't know what is. >> what's the strategy behind that. do you see california as the state you have to win? >> i skipped over the first four. couldn't build an organization, which means you go for super tuesday, california is in. that's what i'm competing in. and you know, i've got to go and explain what i would do. >> so bloomberg is clearly a guy who sees an opening in this race. but the big question is can he catch up. so bloomberg right now is just finishing up a roundtable with mayor tubbs nearby with community leaders. he's then coming to this coffee shop where we're at where he's ongoing to officially get the

endorsement of michael tubbs. bloomberg got a lot of criticism for stop and frisk, a lot of black men say it particularly targeted him. here he is shopping up in california getting the backing of young, millennial black mayor of stockton. definitely i think his campaign sees this as a really good optics moment. >> the policy we had, i apologize for because in the end it turned out we could have done something different. >> at this point reporters at the event start peppering bloomberg with questions about stop and frisk apology, which he continues to apologize for. then there is this remarkable moment with mayor tubbs. >> absolutely i think it's a fair question. again, no surprise to anyone, i'm young, i'm black. my father is still incarcerated so issues about justice are deeply personal. >> i'm joined by

phil, a lot of thing about plm he's jumping in late. a lot of people don't know who he is. >> third time mayor of new york. might want to rename this segment instead of chasing california, catching california, because that is what mayor michael bloomberg is trying to do. he's trying to catch the imagination of the california democratic voter. he's doing it by spending $26 million on television ads to introduce himself to the west coast. he's not known out here except by a billionaire, possible mayor of new york and the mayor as we started the piece, stop and frisk, which is a controversial move in california politics. >> super controversial. that's why when we saw the stockton mayor, young, african-american, progressive guy endorsing mayor plm. a lot of people were surprised by that. that's when you look at bloomberg's strategy.

we interviewed him. you can tell he's going on not just money but using his leverage of being a mayor. >> both together. the mayorship gives him cred. after the mayorship he started something, the bloomberg foundation-type work. what it was, he went around to various cities and various mayors. he's hosted conferences, had confabs, helped with money, planning for urban planning for various programs for cities and you're starting to see the paybacks. he's very close to oakland's mayor. she hasn't endorsed him yet. so you have this relationship between him and elected officials in the state. the question for michael bloomberg can he translate that out to the mass of voters while the clock is ticking down on the primary election. >> how much do endorsements matter anymore. that's a big part of the strategy. that the guy likes me, this guy likes me. >> for michael bloomberg it is. joe biden is known by virtually every democratic voter in the country.

bernie sanders he's already run once, he's been running nonstop for six years. he's a well-known commodity. elizabeth warren has spent the last year introducing herself to voters. michael bloomberg and mayor buttigieg, pete buttigieg, they are having to go the other route. they need people to introduce him as well. for him endorsements are big because they are giving him credibility. >> for me bloomberg so much represents divisions in the democratic party. sanders, the polls show him as the number one, top of the ticket. >> but not really ahead. everybody is up there. >> everybody is up there. bloomberg is this guy who bounced between being a republican and democrat. how many california democrats are going to support them. maybe there is a large pocket of moderate democrats. >> the bloomberg bet is this. democratic voters might say as much as i like joe biden he's too old. as much as i like bernie he's too far to the left. he's not going to win. the bet is none of the above would take out donald trump and he would be the alternative.

michael plm said it doesn't need to be me. i will spend what it takes to get rid of donald trump. that's the fund memorial message of the democratic party is that going to be the fundamental message of the democratic this year. that's what he's betting on. >> i interviewed people who were upset about michael tubbs endorsement, then they heard him speak. >> he's not the only candidate you like. >> we talked to sanders and latino vote. sanders is targeting latino vote. >> yang. >> the yang gang. she interviewed him, the yang gang. a lot to explore here. >> never seen anything like it. >> really fascinating. >> so when people want to see more, where do they go. they g >> nbc nabc7news.com, chasesing

we're in the south bay around evergreen, highway 101 down to edenville. the showers, front, pushing through the south bay into the central coast. another area of moisture here on the peninsula going in closer. see the wet weather from 280 and around burlingame, san mateo, wet weather in the mountains, rain, temperatures in the upper 30s of it's warm. we had southerly winds ahead of this. here is a look at the big picture where the front pushes through and scattered showers behind it. we'll keep them going for several hours. they will be more isolated. then we'll get second half of the day featuring drying conditions. 55 in fremont, hayward and oakland as well as novato, 54 in napa. rain showers, mainly south bay isolated elsewhere. partly cloudy skies this afternoon looking at mainly dry and mild week ahead. in fact, it gets milder and clearer as we get towards thursday and friday. visibility half moon bay.
