sanders won a super bowl with. and we have a team of reporters headed to miami along with chris alvarez. we'll keep you up to date on the players and fans and our digital team will cover the super bowl week on our facebook page. a woman is dead and police say they've arrested the man they suspect killed her. earlier yesterday morning a man called police asking officers to check on a woman in a home. he said he had not spoken to the woman for several hours. when officers arrived at the home, they found the woman dead with multiple stab wounds. they identified the caller as this man, peter rodriguez. investigators say that they believe he is also the killer. the relationship between the two is still under investigation. new developments in the search forusn a deadly hit-and-run in berkeley.e

looking for and he's armed and dangerous. we spoke to police about the progress and they're investigation. >> we consider the suspect armed and dangerous. >> reporter: the search continues for alexander mcgee of oakland. >> officers attempted to arrest the suspect in oakland but he was able to elude capture. we recovered the vehicle that was used in the fatal hit-and-run. >> reporter: a police officer saw mcgee punch a woman in the head on sixth street. when the officer approached the vehicle, he said mcgee made a u-turn while the woman screamed for help. >> after making a wide left on university avenue, the suspect drove his vehicle onto this sidewalk and killed a woman that was sleeping right here. neighbors confirmed she was homeless. >> a homeless person that i had watched for a couple of days sheping in the cold on the tt.

died on the streets. >> reporter: candles and flowers were left to remember the 58-year-old victim. two days prior to the hit-and-run, she planned to help the woman. >> you were saying when you saw her first, you thought i'm going to ask her to move out of the way. >> i did. i thought why is she laying there? she should be more inland, maybe in an area that's covered somewhere and i guess i was too late. >> reporter: mcgee has several warrants for his arrest from multiple police departments in the bay area. >> he was outstanding warrants for felony evading and burglary. >> as to the woman inside the vehicle screaming for help, police did not give specifics about her. >> it could be a victim of domestic violence or human trafficking as well. we know that this was a violent assault. >> police hopes the photos lead to his arrest. abc7 news. it's an end of an era.

th historic clay theater in san francisco is set to close its doors for good today. it opened in 1910, it was one of the last single-screen theaters in the city. landmark which owns the clay said the theater had been losing money for years. the final screenings will be tonight. tickets are $11. we had a little bit of rain this morning, clearing out? >> yeah, some parts, mostly. we have some south bay showers and a few delays at sfo and some fog forming. a live look from our sutro tower camera. it is foggy. those northwesterly winds will pick up along the coast. we'll see some sun today. what about our rain prospects? we'll talk about that and a look at a pretty nice-looking seven day. the u.s. consulate is evacuating personnel from china all due to coronavirus.

welcome back. here's a live look from the golden gate bridge. o beautiful out there and much clearer than it was a few hours ago when we saw that fog and slick roads. all right. san francisco district attorney's office, they have put on hold charges against the man they say is in this body camera video attacking two police officers. those officers i shot the man who is still in the hospital recovering from his

injuries. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez has more. >> if you come to san francisco and juinjure one of my officers it's okay, we're going to give you a free pass. >> the district attorney's office is dropping charges seen here in police body camera footage fighting with two police officers on the morning of december 7th. >> his charging decision to not charge mr. hampton for assaulting two of my members not only caused to my members, it should be cause to every person coming to san francisco. >> reporter: on friday, his office made the decision to with draw the complaint against hampton. he says this is not dropping charges. >> there's an important difference between dismissing the case and with drawing the

complaint. >> that's lawyer talk. they're with drawing the complaint. if you're between the lines, they're drops the charges. >> reporter: he says this is not a decision one way or the other about whether they'll be charging hampton. it's the decision to wait pending further investigation. >> the decision we made was one that frankly is in the best interest of the officers because they're both being investigated right now by our internal investigation bureau, into their use of their firearms and the incident. it would be improper and unfair to put them on the witness stand to testify against mr. hampton while they are being investigated for their use of force. until both investigations can be completed, we are going to withhold making a final decision on who to charge with what. >> reporter: investigations are standard protocol after an officer-involved shooting. the police department has not released any kind of formal statement about this decision but the chief of police did send out a message indicating he was

informed about this withdrawal. he said, quote, i want you to know that we remain committed to working with the d.a. to see that justice is done in this case for our officers. he said he called the chief and the officers directly to explain his decision. in the newsroom, lauren martinez, abc7 news. there's a confirmed case of the deadly coronavirus in orange county. the centers for disease control and prevention said a traveler from wuhan, china, has tested positive for the virus. that patient is in isolation at a hospital and in good condition. there are two other confirmed cases in the u.s., illinois and washington state. this is a live look at sfo. the u.s. consulate on tuesday will be evaatg its staff and private citizens on a charter flight from wuhan to san francisco. a notice says there will be a limited number of seats and those most at risk get the

coronavirus -- of coronavirus get priority. the virus has killed 56 people and infected more than here's the latest. >> reporter: another american diagnosed with the deadly coronavirus. the patient in southern california is the third to be diagnosed with the new pneumonialike virus in the u.s. the centers for disease control and prevention confirming they've been to the chinese city of wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and tested positive for the virus overnight. the patient is in isolation and said to be in good condition, but more people will likely become infected. this as the outbreak escalates again. there are now 15 countries and territories worldwide with cases. this morning, chinese health officials saying more than 2,000 are now infected there and 56

have died. the chinese health commissioner warning the source of the infection still unknown. the harmfulness of the coronavirus to people of different ages is now changing and most weringly, indications the virus is becoming increasing contagious. over 1,300 more medics have been flown to the epicenter where officials are scrambling to build three new emergency hospitals in a matter of days. these exclusive images filmed for abc news from inside the city show a ghost town with sis warning people to wear masks fluttering in the wind. some shoppers take the risk to stock up on supplies. but there is still around 1,000 u.s. citizens stranded in the wuhan area. now the state department is scrambling to evacuate some of them but it appears so far the space to get people out is limited. we spoke to one american family trapped in a city over 200 miles from wuhan.

pier 15, we have a wind at 12 miles per hour. the winds will be breezy at times today and make it feel a little bit cool. 57 in san jose. it's 54 in gilroy and a look from walnut creek. mid-50s and some fog around the bay. it's 57 by the delta. livermore checking in at 54. a lot of cloud cover, even some mists down here in santa cruz. about 60 for a high. partly cloudy skies today, a few light showers for the next hour or so and then drying out. more sunshine for monday and dry this week. there's an opportunity for a north bay shower late tomorrow into tuesday. the rest of the day today, you can see a little bit of green right there and then throughout the afternoon we break out into more sun and itis a cool's winter day. as we look at the wind profile, check it out, the winds increase. 18 to 20 miles per hour.

the wind is getting faster out of the northwest making it feel cool and gusty along the coast to breezy around the bay at times. this is 9:00 tonight. just another element to the cool afternoon today. 59 in oakland. 60 in fremont with low 60s in the south bay and a few patches of fog lingering through the overnight hours. it's a cooler night tonight. as we clear on out, we'll see a lot of sunshine for your monday. temperatures near average with mid-50s to about 60. another chance of rain in the north bay, not looking like we're going to pick up anything measurable, though. into wednesday, it's a mix of clouds and sun. midweek, we transition into a warming trend with highs climbing through the 60s to near 70 by the end of the month, the end of the week. and that's february for us so far. sunny and warm. we'll see how long that lasts. >> if next sunday is anything like next saturday, it's going

welcome back. in three days, private vehicles will be banned from a stretch of market street in san francisco. it will include the area where these cars here, if you can tell on market, drivers will still be able to cross market but they won't be allowed to drive down it for about two miles. this will affect commuters, visitors, tourists and business people. this map here shows the area we're talking about from the foot of market. there will be some exceptions, emergency vehicles, commercial vehicles, and taxis. but no exception for uber and lift drivers. abc7 news reporter kate larson explains the change. >> wednesday morning, there's going to be signs everywhere, all along here. >> reporter: those signs will indicate that no private ubers a ubers and lyfts included.

if that isn't a good investment, i don't know what is? >> do you see california as a state you have to win. >> i skipped over the first four because i entered too late. you couldn't build an organization which means you're going to go for the super tuesday which california is in this time. that's what i'm competing on. and, you know, i've got to go and explain what i would do. >> bloomberg is clearly a guy who sees an opening in this race. but the big question is can he catch up? bloomberg right now is just finishing up a round table with mayor tubs with a bunch of community leaders. he's coming to this coffee shop where he's going to officially get the endorsement mic a lot o criticism for his stop and frisk policies that a lot of young black men say targeted him. and here he is now showing up in

california, getting the backing of the 29-year-old, millennial, black mayor of stockton. i think his campaign sees this as a good optics moment. >> the policy we had, i apologize for. in the end, it turned out we could have done something different. >> reporters start peppering him with questions about stop and frisk policy which he continues to apologize for. but then there is this remarkable moment with mayor tubs. >> absolutely, i think it's a fair question. and, again, no surprise to anyone, i'm young, i'm black. my father is incarcerated. issues about criminal justice are personal by me. >> i'm joined now by an abc7 news contributor. the main thing about bloomberg, he's jumping into this race late and a lot of voters don't know who he is. >> that's right. he's a three-time mayor of new

rename this segment to catching california. that's what mayor michael bloomberg is trying to do. he's trying to catch the imagination of the california democratic voter and he's doing it by spending $26 million on television ads to introduce himself to the west coast because he's just not known out here except for as a billionaire, possibly as the former mayor of new york, and the mayor who started stop and frisk. >> right. >> which is a controversial move in california politics. >> supercontroversial. and that's why when we saw that the stockton mayor, this young african-american mare w african-american mayor was going to be backing bloomberg. you can just really tell, he's going on not just money, he's using his leverage of being a mayor. >> both together. the mayorship gives him credibility. but after the mayorship, he

started something that bloomberg foundation type work. what it was, he went around to various cities and various mayors, he's hosted conferences, he's helped out with money, planning for urban planning, and you're starting to see the pay backs. oakland's mayor hasn't endorsed him yet. you have this relationship between him and elected officials in the state. the question is, can he translate that out to the mass of voters while the clock is ticking down. >> how much do endorsements matter anymore. this guy likes me, this guy likes me -- >> look at his competition, joe biden is known by democratic voters in the country. bernie sanders has run once, he's a well-known commodity. elizabeth warren has spent the last year introdcing herself to voters. michael bloomberg and mayor

buttigieg, they need people to introduce them as well. so his -- for him, endorsements are big. they're giving him credibility. >> i think bloomberg represents the divisions in the democratic party. standards right now, the polls show him as the number one top -- most -- >> not really ahead -- everybody is up there. >> everybody is up there. but i just feel bloomberg is this guy who has bounced being a republican and a democrats. how many democrats are going to support him or maybe there's a large pocket -- >> the bloomberg bet is this, the democratic voters would say, okay, as much as i might like joe biden, he's too old, bernie sanders is too far to the left. the bet is that none of the above are going to be able to take out donald trump and he would be the alternative. michael bloomberg says, it doesn't need to be me. that's the fundamental message of the democratic party, is that going to be the fundamental message of the democratic party this year. that remains to be seen. that's what he's betting on. >> i interviewed people who were

welcome back. hundreds of shoppers are expected at today's 61st annual white elephant preview sale. this is video from last year's event. a warehouse in oakland is filled with donated items for purchase, like furniture, clothing, jewelry and art. proceeds benefit the oakland museum of california. the early access event takes place from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m.
