>> announcer: now from abc7, live breaking news. >> breaking news outside l.a.'s staple center, fans gather to mourn the laker superstar who gave them 20 years of thrills, clutch shots and acrobatic highlights inside the arena. the sports world lost kobe bryant today in a helicopter crash that also killed his 13-year-old daughter and as many as seven others. he was a bigger than life superstar who came to the nba as a skinny teenager and almost immediately let everyone know he belonged. abc news reporter marci gonzalez begins our team coverage. >> reporter: this fiery wreckage in southern california, the scene of the helicopter crash that killed basketball legend kobe bryant and eight others. >> today is a tough day. >> reporter: witnesses report seeing the chopper in distress moments before it went down today in calabasas. >> i heard a helicopter just flying way too low, and i heard

like a loud thud noise. >> reporter: bryant was drafted to the nba straight from high school in 1996, spending his entire 20-year nba career with the los angeles lakers, winning five nba championships as well as two gold olympic medals with the u.s. men's basketball team. the 41-year-old married to his wife vanessa since 2001. their youngest daughter just born in june. bryant retired from basketball in 2016, his third all-time scoring record passed just last night by lebron james. bryant responding with what would be his final tweet, continuing to move the game forward at king james, much respect, my brother. >> i'm happy just to be in any conversation with kobe bryant, one of the all-time greatest basketball players ever played. >> reporter: today a moment of silence at this nba game as so many pay their respects on social media including shaquille o'neal posting on instagram that there are no words to express his pain, calling bryant his

brother. fans gathering near the scene at his home and at the staple center where kobe's two jerseys hang in honor of the iconic athlete. and out here at the scene you can see just some of the people gathered out here to mourn. the ntsb and the faa will investigate, looking into whether the heavy fog that blanketed this area or other weather factors could have played a role in this tragic crash. marci gonzalez, abc news, calabasas, california. >> abc7 news reporter cornell barnard is live at chase center where he talked to sports fans who agreed kobe bryant was an all-time basketball great. cornell? >> reporter: eric, so much sadness over the passing of this nba legend. moments ago warriors gm released a tribute to kobe bryant. >> in a few minutes he said he's going to win ten championships and then move to italy and finish his career there. it was almost like the

in miami right now. they got quite the send-off at maneto san jose airport. the gold rush cheer leaders and drum line were there. they brought out the biggest plane in the fleet, a boeing 777 to fly the niners across the country. the flight crew working the charter says this one is extra special. >> me and my wife have been season holders for 17 years. we enjoy the niners and this is the year. >> we're going to the super bowl. this is the culmination of all their hard work. i have been working with the 49ers the last five years and we've gone through ups and downs and i couldn't be more excited for them. >> well, no niner celebration is complete without salvado sam. the celebration continued on the ground in miami. the charter flight landed just before 4:00 pacific time. some familiar faces off the united airlines plane, all looked prepared for what is expected to be a very busy week

in miami. also in miami, abc7 sports anchor chris alvarez who caught up with fans taking in the super bowl experience and checks in with us live. chris? >> hi, eric, yes, back out here live where the 49ers landed a little over an hour ago. there is more video coming. i sent out a tweet about some of the fun stuff when niners came down that ramp. of course, the football game is part of the huge week here in miami. we went to the super bowl experience at the miami convention center. fans from around the country and around the world are in miami to take in everything super bowl week has to offer. today i dropped by the fan experience at the convention center to find out how the 49ers fans and chiefs fans are feeling a week out from super bowl sunday. >> my prediction is niners are going to take it. having bose and jimmy, it's good-bye going to be a great football game. >> patrick mahomes, i think

after more than 100 years, the historic clayeranfrancisco doors for good today. the 325-seat clay which opened in 1910 was one of the last single-screen theaters in the

city. landmark, which owns the clay, said the theater had been losing money for years. the clay was known for showing low-budget limited release films. the final screenings will feature honey lamb tonight. muni is shutting down for maintenance. buses will provide service between embarcadero and saint francis circle in san francisco. street cars will continue to operate on surface portions of each muni metro line. the closures begin at 9:30 nightly and will last for about a week. saw a lot of clouds there in the skies. let's see what the forecast looks like with drew tuma. >> yeah, depending on where you were out and about today t was a dramatically different sky. this morning we had clouds, we had showers moving through, then the afternoon we had a lot of sunshine to finish out our sunday. live doppler 7 showing you any showers we did have earlier today. they have now moved out. what replaced it, pretty gorgeous sunset on this sunday evening. we'll take our emeryville camera

now, live look as the sun is setting shortly after 5:20 this evening. you notice it's a mainly clear sky. that's how we'll begin tomorrow morning as well. showers today certainly in the north bay saw the most rain. santa rosa close to half of an inch, less than that outside of the north bay. san francisco and oakland close to a quarter of an inch much rain. less than that in concord and san jose, palo alto shy of a 10th of an inch of rain. now still pretty comfortable this evening. mainly in the 50s to low 60s. 59 in oakland, 58 in san jose and napa right now at 61 degrees. here's the story. live doppler 7 along with satellite, you can see the cold front moved through early this morning, brought the showers. that is now moving out and high pressure is briefly moving in for our monday. so overnight tonight we'll see mainly clear skies. after midnight we'll find some patchy fog developing in our north bay valleys. otherwise temperatures will pretty much bottom out in the low to mid 40s over the next 12 hours. so break down your monday tomorrow. some patchy fog first thing at 7:00 a.m., otherwise it's a

ago as both the chiefs and niners are here in south beach. we'll get more on the game in just a moment. first we want to start with the breaking news of nine people dead in a california helicopter crash including kobe bryant and his daughter. players across the league today wearing the shoes. kobe was number 24. everything began with a 24 shot clock violation on the first play of the game. this was the spurs and raptors. even outside of basketball, after a soccer goal, namar scored a goal and he flashed a 24 for kobe bryant. celebrating a sack by making a jump shot. everyone just absolutely devastated, especially another lakers legend kareem abdul-jabbar. >> kobe, my thoughts are with you absolutely. rest in peace, young man. this loss is, it's just hard to comprehend. go with god. >> you know, he means a lot to me obviously.
