family. >> as the tribute to bryant, the purple and gold colors of the los angeles lakers are lighting up landmarks across the region including l.a.x. airport, the santa monica pier and l.a.'s city hall. >> and the investigation into the helicopter crash that killed bryant is now getting under way. >> reporter: this morning, the new clues about the crash that took the life of nba legend, kobe bryant. that column of smoke was first seen just before 10:00 a.m. >> south of 101, helicopter went down. >> reporter: the fiery remnants of the helicopter barely visible through the thick fog. emergency crews rush to the remote scene. >> paramedics were hoisted down to the incident early into the incident. they did a search of the area for survivors. unfortunately all the survivors on board were determined to have been perished. >> reporter: now as officials clear away debris at the crash site which could take days,

investigators are working to piece together why the helicopter went down killing bryant along with his 13-year-old daughter and all seven others on board. >> i heard some noise, and the engine was not really running fast. >> reporter: the group flying to an event for the mamba league, a foundation started by bryant to teach kids basketball. the trip was supposed to take less than a half an hour, but nearly 45 minutes after takeoff, witnesses saw the chopper begin to struggle. >> i heard a helicopter just flying just way too low and i heard, like, a loud thud noise. >> when we look at the mishap site itself, we can see that the aircraft hit at a high speed. it was not controlled. there was no attempt to land, and so whatever happened here was catastrophic and happened in those last 15 seconds of flight. >> reporter: visibility at the time of the crash was so bad the lapd had grounded police helicopters at the time. they say it's too soon to know whether fog played a role. friends and fans struggling to understand the loss. >> i'm sick right now.

praised by bryant for breaking his all-time score record just this weekend, and he was seen being consoled after hearing the news. his former teammate and friend shaquille o'neal tweeted he had no words to express the news and pain he was going through, losing his niece gee yigi and h brother. others paying tribute writing on their sneakers writing r.i.p. and heart symbols. bryant often took that helicopter to avoid l.a. traffic. his former pilot tells the "los angeles times" the chopper had a strong safety record and was in, quote, fantastic condition. we have much more to come on the death of kobe bryant including the powerful tribute at the grammys from alicia keys and boyz ii men. coming up in about ten minutes, a closer look at his life off the court, his cultural impact and his family. srn ing,t trump's impeachment ry trial. >> "the new york times" has obtained a draft of former national security adviser's new

book, and in the draft, bolton says president trump held up military aid to ukraine because he wanted the ukrainians to investigate the bidens. president trump overnight tweeted a fierce denial. >> meanwhile on capitol hill today, alan dershowitz and ken starr scheduled to defend the president. abc's andrew dymburt has all the new details from washington. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth and kimberly. yeah. as trump's legal team begins to prepare and fight these impeachment articles of impeachment, a yet to be published book is ramping up democrats' demands to allow new witnesses and testimony be admitted in this trial. democrats want one witness to testify more than any other, former national security adviser, john bolton, a new report by "the new york times" shows just how critical to the case he may be. according to "the times," four weeks ago bolton submitted a manuscript to the white house of an unpublished book he wrote

called "the room where it happened." he detailed an august 2019 conversation with trump claiming the president told bolton personally that he wanted to continue withholding military aid to the ukraine until officials there launched investigations into trump's rivals including joe biden. abc news has not independently reviewed the manuscript. this reported firsthand account undercuts what the president's lawyers argued in the impeachment trial over the weekend. >> there is simply no evidence anywhere that president trump ever linked security assistance to any investigations. >> reporter: president trump flatly denying the new report, i never told john bolton that the aid to the ukraine was tied to investigations into the democrats, including the bidens, and released the military aid to ukraine without any conditions or investigations, and far ahead of schedule. democrats feel this only boosts their case for additional witnesses and documents. senate minority leader chuck schumer pleading to some moderate republicans on twitte to go against party lines and

vote to introduce new evidence in the trial. john bolton has the evidence. it's up to four senate republicans to ensure john bolton, mick mulvaney and the others with direct knowledge of president trump's actions testify in the senate trial. and bolton has said he would testify if subpoenaed by the senate. meanwhile the trial resumes this afternoon, kenneth. kimberly? >> abc's newest correspondent making his "america this morning" debut. andrew dymburt, thank you. and developing overseas, for the first time in years, rockets have hit the u.s. embassy in baghdad. reports say the cafeteria was hit and at least one minor injury has been reported. the u.s. military says there's no serious damage, and no immediate claim of responsibility, but u.s. officials have referred to iran's recent attacks on american interest in the region. earlier this month, the pentagon says 34 u.s. service members in iraq suffered traumatic brain

intensifying. new cases in california and arizona have now pushed the number of patients in the u.s. to five. each of them traveled recently to the epicenter of the outbreak, wuhan, china. chinese health officials overnight confirmed 80 people have now died from the virus and nearly 3,000 have been infected. china is expanding efforts to stop the spread by postponing the end of this week's lunar new year holiday when millions of people travel. the virus begins with cold-like symptoms and then progresses to possible fever, coughing and pneumonia. >> the characteristics of this virus are still being determined which is why we're taking this as a serious threat to public health. >> reporter: wuhan and 14 other cities are on lockdown meaning 50 million people are now under a travel ban. >> it's very quiet because cars, private vehicles have been banned from the roads. >> reporter: tom hancock, a reporter for "the financial times" is in wuhan and says hospitals are overwhelmed. >> it's clear that beijing and

debris. roughly 100 yards across and in each direction. there were numerous witnesses that heard or saw something. they were in the vicinity. >> fans around the world are devastated by bryant's sudden death. he was widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. bryant was drafted to the nba straight from high school in 1996. he spent his entire 20-year career with the lakers. he was an 18-time all-star, won five nba championships and two olympic gold medals. several sports teams played tribute to kobe bryant. his number was 24. so nba games yesterday started with a 20-second stop clock violation at the start of the game. even soccer star, neymar scored a goal and flashed a 24 for bryant. during the pro bowl, players celebrated a sack by making a jump shot in kobe's honor.
