now at 5:00, the final moments of the flight that killed kobe bryant and eight others. the new information we've learned about all the victims. a mix of heavy hearts and also excitement as super bowl week kicks off in miami. we're checking in live with julian glover. good morning on this tuesday, january 28th. >> we'll take you down to miami live with julian in a few minutes. first to mike to see what our forecast looks like. on this tuesday relatively quiet but things will change as we head throughout the day. we're a 1 on the storm impact scale. a little steadier rain is possible in sonoma county. less than a tenth of an inch of rain. here is where the rain is right now, well up to the north with our live doppler and eureka picking most of it up, even mountain snows. heading off to the east right now. as we look at the scarlet and gold, it looks like we just missed out on our day planner.

bryant and eight others. >> investigators are focused on an ipad that could potentially hold clues. rachel brown from our los angeles sister station is in calabasas this morning with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: ntsb investigators are here in calabasas right now. they haven't determined a cause yet but are confident they will. they are looking into the weather, any possible mechanical issues and decision making on behalf of the pilot. air traffic control radioed in telling the pilot they were flying too low to receive any flight communication assistance. at a news conference yesterday the ntsb said in addition to the heavy fog heavy air traffic forced the pilot to circle for 12 minutes. investigators say there was no black box required for this time of aircraft but they hope the pilot's ipad will give them information about the flight path and weather conditions. also this morning, "people" magazine reporting kobe bryant and his wife vanessa made a deal to never fly on the same chopper together. reporting in calabasas, rachel

brown, abc 7 news. >> all nine victims in the crash have now been identified. >> among those killed bryant's 13 year year daughter gianna, teammate alyssa and parents john and keri altobelli. the pilot ara zobayan had two decades of experience and bryant's assistant coach christina mauser. her husband spoke about her talent as a coach. >> kobe didn't pick my wife because she was average. i don't think anything he ever did was average. he picked my wife because she was exceptional at what she did. coming up on "gma" much more on all the crash victims. that's at 7:00 right after abc 7 mornings. with los angeles grieving kobe bryant's death, the lakers will not play their scheduled game tonight. the lakers shared this tweet that says thank you to everyone for the outpouring of support and condolences. the nba says out of respect for the team it has postponed the game against the clippers.

it will be rescheduled. the team says this is a very difficult time for them and that they continue to support the bryant family. kobe's death put the sports world in complete shock. suddenly saying good-bye to one of its fiercest competitors. >> fellow athletes from the 49ers and the chiefs shared their grief. players gathered in front of swarms of media to kick off super bowl week and a lot of them spoke about the impact kobe had on them. >> other than my parent, he was the reason to play sports, his mindset, the mamba mentality. i wore the number 24 in high school my freshman and sophomore year in high school because of him. >> growing up in south central, you don't have a lot to lean on, a lot to look forward to. the one person i looked to for inspiration and for all my strength growing up when i was going through the things i was going through was kobe bryant. >> hard rock stadium was lit up

in lakers colors, purple and gold. there was also a moment of silence before the event started and you can see people with their lakers jerseys throughout. still, though, opening night was all about the fans. >> it was everyone's last chance to see both teams together before the big game. abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live with more on that event. >> reporter: good morning to you both from miami. somehow the excitement leading into the super bowl caused unprecedented excitement, a new level there and the fans were giving unheard of access to the players, and we even learned that tom brady texted jimmy garoppolo good luck ahead of the game and that has to be worth something, right? everyone predicting it will be a slugfest between the two qbs. this was a dream come true,

getting a picture with their favorite 49ers and chiefs, too. this will be the first time they see each other ahead of the game. the fans are taking it all in. >> go rest up and get ready for the game. >> reporter: you heard a concerned fan joking he wanteded to make sure the team got some rest because the media event went pretty late into the night. travis kelce said the entire team's mind-set going into this season was if you don't make it to the super bowl and you don't win the entire season is a failure. they are also ready for what's to come super bowl sunday. i have to say, guys, if you like delicious food, if you're coming down to miami for the super bowl, stick around at 5:45,

everybody else around 50 to 52 along the east bay shore. we have 50 in concord and antioch. 53 in san francisco. 51 in san jose but most of our east bay valleys and also the peninsula in the upper 40s. a look at your commute very dry. those scattered showers developing. mass transit could be damp and a little drizzle, a few showers over the bay. 87, one of the least likely areas to get wet weather is the south bay. planner, i promise you, best in the north through 7:00 starting to hit the heart of the bay at noon and exiting the south bay around 4:00 and tapering rather quickly. a look at the peninsula, 48 at 7:00. near 60, one of the areas least likely to see scattered showers. east bay, looks dry all these time frames. remember, a shower could happen in between. have our app open and live

it is 5:13. here are the seven things to know this morning. the pilot and helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant and eight others was trying to climb above a layer of clouds just before the chopper went down. officials are calling the crash site devastating. number two, starting tomorrow in san francisco private cars will be banned on market street from the ferry building to van ness. the city is making the change for traffic reasons. >> the cdc wants people to avoid

unnecessary travel to china because of the coronavirus. number four, super bowl opening night in miami gave fans and media the rare chance to come face-to-face with niners and chiefs players before sunday's game. number five, i'm tracking a chance of wet weather. here it is with live doppler 7. you can see most it have is north of us right now. as we head throughout the day the 1 will bring us some scattered showers, less than a tenth of an inch. good morning. number six, a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are not on yet. we expect them to come on any minute now but for the most part looking pretty good there. number seven, justin bieber coming to the south bay. he'll perform at levi's stadium. the new tour comes as he gets ready to drop his new album called "changes" on february 14th which is, of course, valentine's day. gilroy police are on the lookout for a suspicious man who approached a 2-year-old boy. the boy's father was shopping at a goodwill store when he lost track of his son.

police say he found the boy in a different aisle holding this man's hand. the dad said he heard the man say, let's go, buddy, before leading the boy to the front of the store. the man let go of the boy when the dad confronted him. goodwill employees say they had previously escort that had man out for shoplifting. building a better bay area means finding solutions to big issues in different cities. and in san francisco a constant problem is car break-ins. abc 7 news reporter kate larson spoke with san francisco's new district attorney about what he's doing to prosecute thieves. >> reporter: sfpd put out new data that car burglaries actually went down 2% citywide from 2018 to 2019. but in this diamond heights shopping center and the 1,000 feet around it car burglaries actually increased by more than 300% in the same time period. >> it feels like maybe three seconds, boom, in and out. >> reporter: he was inside his suv with his family over the holidays in this safeway parking lot when two burglars smashed

his rear window and grabbed his stuff. the supervisor got wind of the story on next door which was the impetus for this standing room only safety discussion at sfpd's police academy monday night. chesa boudin showed up to his first meeting. >> there's a liquid market in the bay area for stolen goods. >> reporter: despite the perception that he's going to be soft on criminals, boudin says he will prosecute auto burglaries as felonies. >> taking apart the networks that create demand for stolen products. >> reporter: the owner of the shopping center says they're upgrading cameras, lighting and security. sfpd is stepping up patrols and taking responsibility. >> there's nothing worse than the feeling of being a victim and we apologize. that's our failure. we working hard to address it.

people, wonderful food. i love going to the bahamas and would love to help them while there. let's talk about walnut creek, south on 680. it's mostly cloudy but the scattered showers are later into the day unless you're in the north bay, some of those will roll in during the morning commute. in fact, you have the best coverage in the north bay. more fog and cool early lows and spring warmth to a winter chill. let's see where the cool spot is. richmond at 58 along with ukiah. we have vallejo, napa, san rafael, san francisco and half moon bay at 59. 60 to 63 degrees. at 6:00 this morning, the best chance up in the north bay. a little drizzle possible along the coast all the way down to about, say, pacifica. and then our scattered showers will be more dominant feature of the forecast as we head through 9:30. still in the north bay and they start to slide out of there as we head from mid morning into

let's take a look at the seven-day forecast i put together for miami starting with today. a little brighter than it was yesterday with temperature near 80, the same thing wednesday and thursday. the humidity will increase out ahead of a chance of some thunderstorms friday and saturday, but then the cold front rolls through and it's less humid and temperatures fall into the mid-70s. sunday a gorgeous day. by the time we get the game going, we're going to fall down into about 66 degrees because the kickoff is at 6:30.

commuter alert for the caldecott tunnel. bore number one from 10:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. this will impact travelers from oakland to orinda. tomorrow morning no more driving on market street unless you have a specific type of vehicle, cars are a thing of the past. reporter amy hollyfield is live for us in san francisco. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning. if you see any cars, take a look, the last day you will see them here on this street. starting tomorrow no cars allowed here on market street. commercial vehicles will be allowed, emergency vehicles, that's about it. taxicabs will be allowed but even ride share cars like uber and lyft will be banned.

this morning people are telling us they have concerns about where all of these cars are going to go. >> i can see it causing some traffic around the area since people can't drive on the street but overall a good thing. >> reporter: so here is a map of the affected area. it's more than a two-mile-long stretch. the blocks change a bit in each direction but it's basically from the ferry building down to van ness. cars can cross but will not be allowed to turn. this starts tomorrow at 6:00 a.m., likely going to cause some confusion. go ahead and try to help spread the word today. you're going to talk to them and make sure they know this is happening. >> thank you, amy, many of you have questions so we have answers to the top seven on our website.

abc7news.com. the coronavirus outbreak is worsening. it will limit air, rail and ferry travel to mainland china. yesterday the cdc raised its travel warning recommending that people avoid nonessential trips to china. there are five confirmed cases of the coronavirus here in the u.s. none of them are in san francisco or the bay area. they are prepared to handle an outbreak. >> right now there's really no risk in san francisco or in the united states. we realize that people may wear masks for other reasons. >> a flight to evacuate u.s. officials from wuhan, china, was rumored to be landing at sfo. instead it will go to ontario in southern california. passengers will undergo health screenings for the virus. many tech companies are heeding the cdc's warning. facebook is among those stopping nonessential company travel to china. companies with offices in china

are telling employees to work from home. this morning san francisco's new district attorney chesa boudin has sharp criticism. >> this is after boudin decided to withdraw charges against a suspect in a violent police shooting. video shows the suspect, jamaica hampton, running from two officers in the mission last month after allegedly hitting one of them with a vodka bottle. officers ended up shooting and injuring hampton. abc 7 news caught up with asked boudin about his choice to withdraw charges against hampton. >> we're not putting the officeers in a position they have to either testify against mr. hampton and expose themselves to criminal liability in the process or choose not to prosecute, not to cooperate and we have to dismiss the case. it's in the best interests of everyone involved. i'm sorry the poa doesn't see that and is putting the politics of their election first. >> the police officers association calls boudin, quote, a threat to public safety.

the d.a.'s office wants to bring charges back as soo as the investigation into the two officers is over. we're learning more about the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant and eight others including his daughter. investigators describe the crash site as devastating. they confirm the pilot was trying to climb above a layer of clouds just before the crash. about 40 minutes after takeoff air traffic controllers informed the pilot they could not detect him on radar. the helicopter then accelerated quickly before slamming into a canyon. officials are asking for any photos of the area before the crash as they look through debris for answers. happening today a grand opening celebration to honor the fallen and survivors of last year's garlic festival mass shooting. the strong resiliency center opens on monterey road. the santa clara county d.a.'s office says it will focus on group counseling, trauma education, and compensating those who survived. three people died and a dozen

others were injured in july's shooting. the san jose sharks honored ten first responders in the gilroy garlic festival shooting during a pregame ceremony last night. >> sharks fans please join me as we thank all of them for their heroism and the sacrifices they have made to protect our community. >> so this was part of the team's heroes appreciation night at s.a.p. center. the sharks wore black gilroy strong jerseys during their warm-ups. the jerseys were then given to first responders. the sharks foundation also donated $50,000 to the gilroy strong fund-raising effort. the sharks beat the and ducks, 4-2. at the live desk this morning a new job for former secretary of state condoleezza rice. here is the tweet with the announcement right here for you all. rice will be the next director of the hoover institution at stanford. the hoover institution is a public policy think tank headquartered on the stanford

here we go at the exploratorium, how there would be drizzle near the coast and there you go as you head into san francisco, a little bit of drizzle out there even down to the peninsula coast as we head through the morning commute, maybe not as much in the east bay hills. there's a little bit of da dampness. it's milder this morning. 48 in menlo park. we have 48 in palo alto. 49 at san ramon. temperatures are climbing this morning as the clouds are on the increase. so far it's pretty dry as you look at san mateo, looking from the east bay west to the peninsula. there will be some slick spots driving all day today. damp at times for mass transit and the bay commute. for the north bay the best chance of a little bit of fog this morning and rain all the way up through about 11:00 to noon. temperatures in the low to mid-50s and upper 50s around 3:00 with a mixture of sunshine and some clouds. for the east bay, you don't see
