ranking officials faces federal corruption charges. >> mohammed nuru is alleged to have provided lefty o'doul's and gold dust lounge owner nick bovis with inside information to give him an unfair advantage in awarding of contracts. both men appeared in federal court today. >> abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is in the newsroom with new information tonight. melanie? >> dan and liz, i just learned the name of the sfo commissioner who turned down mohammed nuru and nick bovis' alleged bribe. t it is linda creighton. i spoke with her on the phone, and she told me, quote, her integrity means a lot to her. i also spoke to her attorney, who told me he had no comment. nuru and bovis were each released on $2 million bond. the department of public works says that fbi investigators gathered documents from nuru's office at city hall yesterday afternoon. tonight he is on administrative leave. alleged corruption, bribery, and side deals by one of san francisco's highest ranking

employees, director of public works mohammed nuru. restaurateur nick bovis also charged in a criminal complaint with honest services wire fraud in connection with an alleged scheme to bribe a san francisco airport commissioner. the alleged bribe, $5,000 cash and free travel in exchange for the commissioner's assistance to win a bid for the right to run a restaurant at sfo. both men allegedly violated rules requiring a fair competitive bidding process though the scheme was never completed and the bribe never paid. >> federal law gives the citizens of san francisco a right to honest services from their public officials. >> reporter: additional schemes alleged include nuru using his position to benefit a billionaire in china who was developing a large multi-million dollar mixed use project in san francisco. >> the complaint alleges corruption pouring into san francisco from around the world allegedly attempting to use his position as the chair of the

transbay joint powers authority to secure a desirable lease for bovis in the transbay transit center. also allegedly providing bovis with inside information on city projects regarding portable bathroom trailers and homeless housing units so bovis could win those contracts. and nuru allegedly obtaining free and discounted labor and equipment from contractors to help him build a personal vacation home while those contractors were also engaging in business with the city. nuru tweeted this photo with bovis in 2013, thanking him for his leadership and all he does for children in the bay area and beyond. nuru is also charged in a second complaint for having shared details of the investigation after previously promising to cooperate with the fbi. san francisco mayor london breed had this to say today. >> it is of course important that we work with our city attorney and our controller's office to fully cooperate with the fbi on this particular investigation to ensure public

trust and full transparency. >> reporter: the mayor is asking the city attorney and controller to conduct a thorough review of any implicated city contracts. the department of public works tells abc7 news its number one priority is to ensure that staff stay focused on their jobs and the work of the department. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> nuru is on paid administrative leave right now, but this afternoon the city removed his bio from the department of public works website. this is what's on the web page where the bio was still available as late as 3:00 p.m., three hours ago. the city's department of human resources released a statement today. quote, we will note under state law an employer cannot release an employee solely on the basis of an arrest or allegations made against them. it doesn't sit well with san francisco supervisor matt haney. >> he should be fired immediately. the idea that he be put on administrative leave potentially being paid until the facts come out, there's enough that's come

out to say that he should no longer be the dpw director and that this entire department needs to be reformed. >> now on our 4:00 p.m. newscast, i talked with abc7 news contributor and chronicle insider phil matier. he thinks this is just the beginning. >> well, there's going to be more names to follow and it's very, very interesting. we're talking about two very well known figures in san francisco, not only in politics but in the civic arena as well. mohammed nuru, 30 years with the department of public works, worked his way up. he is known for the guy cleaning the streets of the city, building the navigation centers, taking the transbay terminal, which was way overdue to be built. you hand it to mohammed, he will cut through the red tape or bhafr it takes and get the job done. this time, however, he appears to have carried that over into his personal life and cut corners that could get him i trouble, specifically hooking up with nick bovis, who is also very well known san franciscan. >> he certainly is. you've seen nick bovis many times here on abc7. here's video from a year ago when his restaurant, lefty

o'doul's provided free meals for federal workers furloughed during the government shutdown. and here's video from christmas 2018. bovis has been giving christmas presents to students at a tenderloin school for years. now he's accused of working with nuru to get inside information to gain an unfair advantage in awarding contracts. as this story broke today, we started sending out push alerts through the abc7 news app. download that right now. it is the easiest way to be the first to know what's going on where you live. a lost child discovered alone in a park is back with her family tonight. someone noticed the little girl alone at fremont's crandall creek park this afternoon and called police. officers think she's about 2 years old. they took that little girl on a search for her family in a neighborhood adjacent to the park. they went door to door and spoke with neighbors. police say the girl's mother came to the scene when she saw the department posting about it on social media, that officers were looking for the child's

family. it took about an hour of searching, and the girl was thankfully back with her family. well, starting tomorrow, a big stretch of san francisco's busiest street will be closed to private vehicles. we've been warning you about this for weeks. the time is now. about two miles of market street will close roughly from van necessary to the ferry building. the reason? well, making it safer for people walking and biking as well as speeding up public transit. could this help build a better bay area? abc7 news reporter ansar hassan, how is the city going to enforce this? >> reporter: yeah, dan. good evening. sfmta says they'll have extra patrols at 11 different intersections along market street starting tomorrow that will last for the next couple of weeks. they say last year there was about 123 injury-related accidents from van ness -- or from market street down to van ness. they hope by taking private cars

off the street, it will make it safer. this delivery driver who didn't want to give his name may be delivering his last pizza to one market. starting tomorrow, he won't be allowed to drive on market street. >> you guys can't drive, so how are you going to deliver food? >> apparently we're going to have to go around the block or find other places. it's already tough trying to find parking. >> reporter: new street signs went up this morning to warn drivers about the changes. emergency vehicles, delivery trucks, buses and taxis can still drive on market street, but private cars including lyft and uber are banned. sfmta estimates that more than half a million people walk market street every day, and 650 bicyclists ride it each hour during peak commute times. derek is one of them. >> at least down to where 10th street is, around there there's a protected bike lane. but up until then, it's pretty dangerous with the bikes next to

the cars and buses. >> reporter: market street will be car-free roughly between the ferry building and van ness depending on which direction drivers are going. river drum welcomes the change but says since it's not a total ban, it only works if it's enforced. >> i guess it will depend on how it's enforced by the police and whoever is enforcing it, making sure that cars actually stay off market. >> reporter: officials say there will be extra patrols to monitor drivers while sfmta monitors traffic. >> we're very confident that it will get dispersed through a wide network of streets, so there's not one particular street that we think all the traffic is going to go to. but we will be monitoring the situation, and we're more than prepared to make adjustments if necessary. >> reporter: the sfmta says they won't be ticketing right away, but once they do, the fine is $238 and a point on your driving record. reporting live in san francisco,

ansar hassan. >> we know you have questions about this, so we have answers to the top seven questions on our website. just go to abc7news.com when you have a moment. as part of building a better bay area, oakland took action today to clean up some of the homeless encampments around the city. the mayor opened up a new site for tuffsheds to shelter people. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley explains what else happened. leslie? >> reporter: well, it's that question, what to do about homelessness. today oakland made a gallant attempt on three fronts to get at the problem. they were cleaning up trash at one encampment. they were starting the process of moving another encampment that's been there for three years. and finally they did open up a few new housing units. garbage trucks moved in on the mattresses, the mounds of garbage at union point park along the embarcadero in oakland. >> when a rat goes by and it says hello to you, there's a problem. >> reporter: many of the homeless literally applauded the

city crews. others were upset. >> they moved me from down there, up to here, and i have ptsd, and that don't work well with me. >> reporter: this bottwoman has lived here in a tent for six years. are you planning to move out of here? >> oh, yeah, we plan on moving. >> do you have a trailer lined up? >> yeah, they're slowly moving people out. it just takes time. >> and you're okay with that? >> we're on the list, yeah. >> reporter: oakland also announced they're starting to dismantle the encampment in the home depot parking lot in the fruitvale area in the coming month and will move many of the homeless into designated safe rv parking lots and trailers as well. some of those trailers supplied by the state of california as outlined to abc7 news by governor newsom a few weeks ago. >> we're bringing out trailers, emergency medical equipment. we're going to start treating this like it's a fema recovery operation. >> reporter: also mayor libby schaaf unveiled a new so-called cabin community of tiny homes

>> what is everyone doing in the days leading up to sunday? larry beil is live in miami. he's got some answers for us. big fun there, larry. >> reporter: yeah. we're working very hard, dan, at the nfl party tonight. very hard. it's not all about preparing for the game. abc7 news south bay community journalist dustin dorsey found some nfl veterans, some current players, and others hitting the beach and doing it for a good cause. you know you can't come to miami without visiting the beautiful beaches. but we're not here for sun tanning and surfing. it's all about volunteering today. dozens are on hand to help clean the beaches as part of the nfl huddle for 100 campaign. >> we are out here at the huddle for 100 beach cleanup to really get fans volunteering across the country. the ocean conservancy was hosting this incredible event so we're partnering with them to clean up this lovely beach here today. >> i think it's great that the nfl put a priority on people

getting involved. and not only highlighting the things that players are doing but trying to engage the fans and say, hey, football is fun. football is great, and it's fun on sunday, but there's a lot of things that are a lot more important than football. >> we have i think surpassed about 250 million minutes. i'm hoping to get to 300 million minutes by the end of this week to go out with a bang. >> i always thought the greatest advantage of being a professional athlete, playing in the nfl, is the opportunity to have a platform, to shine a light on things that need help, you know, whether that's kids and trying to help with the problems in homelessness or helping in trying to clean up the ocean. there's so much work we need to do and i'm just proud to be out here today, get out in the water, get in the ocean and try to clean it up. >> coming back especially during this time and being able to do something at this level, i feel like it's definitely something i'm proud of and happy to be a part of. this is the only world we have. to come and clean up the beaches, do things of this sort,

we're keeping an eye on that weather for you for the super bowl as well and here. >> it is looking nice. i'm going to show you the miami forecast, the super bowl forecast in just a moment. first what's happening right here right now is not much. we have dry conditions, a little system we had that brought us some showers earlier today has moved away, and it has left behind exactly what we forecast. that is about a tenth of an inch of rainfall or less. in fact, most places had lower than a tenth of an inch. it was a light storm indeed. here's a live view from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero. 56 in san francisco. mid to upper 50s at oakland. redwood city, san jose. 51 at gilroy. nice view from emeryville. you can see the outline of some high clouds in the sky there. they'll be with us overnight as well. temperature readings in the low to mid-50s in santa rosa,

petaluma, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. here's the view at the golden gate bridge. these are our forecast features. widespread fog during the overnight and early morning hours, so commuters may find it a slow go. warmer pattern settles in thursday through saturday. much warmer in fact, but we'll be turning sharply cooler, the weather will be, on sunday. overnight with lots of fog across the region, we'll see low temperatures dropping into the low to mid 40s. then tomorrow under hazy sunshine, we'll see high temperatures ranging from about 60 at the coast to some low and mid-60s around the bay shoreline. mid-60s down into the south bay. mid-60s in the inland east bay and up north where we'll see highs of 65 at santa rosa and napa. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. once we get to thursday, we're going to see quite a warm-up thursday, friday, and saturday. high temperatures inland and around the bay shoreline. it will be near or even above 70 degrees. low 60s on the coast friday and

welcome back. a large sinkhole is now a big headache for homeowners in santa clara. >> the hole is in the middle of the living room, and the home can't be occupied. the house is in the rancho palma grande condominium complex in santa clara. >> abc7 news reporter david louie got a look inside. >> reporter: the sinkhole is about the size of a bathtub right in the middle of the living room. it's covered up for safety, but when crews went down to investigate, the hole was a good six feet deep and filled with water. 20 months ago when the water was first discovered through a floor grate, the water was only four feet deep. but the more they tried to pump it out, the more flow kept increasing over a three-month period. >> what it translates to is 17,000 gallons a day. so it's like almost a swimming pool a day is coming out of the

house. >> reporter: it's believed the water may be coming from an old well. when the land underneath the condominiums was an orchard. owners doug ridley and sherry schenn sued the homeowners association last summer for negligence. meantime, their engineering consultant says there's evidence the foundation is cracking and the house is being undermined. >> i can't tell you how much we will be spending going on because it's not nearly -- it's not near the end. i can't even see the end. >> reporter: the legal and engineering fees are mounting, running about $160,000 so far. >> not only can you have a potential for structural damage, house movement, settlement and stuff like that, but also you've got water underneath the house that is creating an environment where mold can grow, and that can circulate through the home. >> reporter: the house has plastic sheeting everywhere to prevent the mold from spreading. there are larvae growing underneath the house. we reached out to the law firms

>> announcer: now, news to build a better bay area from abc7. the bodies have been recovered and the wrecked aircraft has been retrieved. now the investigation into what caused the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, and seven others begins to really take shape. >> the national transportation safety board says it will be months before an official cause for sunday's crash will be released. many questions linger over whether it was safe to fly given the foggy conditions. >> well, we are going to look at the weather conditions. we're going to talk to air traffic control. we're going to talk to the company, and we're going to look

at records. >> tonight the l.a. coroner's office officially identified four of the nine victims. they include kobe bryant of course, john altobelli, sarah chester, and the pilot, ar raza buyian. >> the remains of all nine victims have been recovered and investigators will now conduct examinations on the victims. >> as we said, the wrecked helicopter has been moved. it's been taken to a secure location to be examined thoroughly. >> abc7 news reporter annabelle munoz takes us inside a usc lab where students are learning how to reconstruct aviation crashes just like this one. >> this is the wreckage of a helicopter. >> reporter: aviation professionals from around the world find a training ground at the usc aviation safety and security program. >> we teach them to investigate aircraft accidents, helicopter accidents, jet engine accidents and incidents so they can go back and improve safety in their own organizations. >> reporter: in this room there's more than a dozen real wreckages, and part of the

program is taking a close look at some of them to determine what happened. >> this part of the aircraft impacted the ground first or at least absorbed a lot of the energy. in any aircraft accident investigation it's a combination of two or three or four or five hazards come together at the same time and resulting in this catastrophic result. >> reporter: once the ntsb takes over, the investigation could last months or longer. >> it's required by international standard that they appoint an iic, an investigator in charge, and that investigator n charge has the responsibility of organizing and conducting the accident investigation. some investigators will simply walk with a voice recorder and take in the whole scene. >> reporter: here they simulate the investigation, talking with witnesses and data analysis from air traffic facilities preserved immediately after a crash. >> everyone will essentially

victim services. santa clara county's district attorney attended today's opening and says the healing continues. >> we will be united. we will be stronger. we will be here together for one another. >> there are plans to add services in the future as well. the center will feature artwork with gilroy high school students taking part in an art contest focusing on themes of strength and love. the coronavirus is spreading in china, putting american health officials on high alert tonight. china has now confirmed 5,974 cases of the virus and 132 deaths. there are five confirmed cases in the u.s., two in california. none of those here in the bay area. 20 united states airports are now screening for the virus, up from five yesterday. that's how rapidly things are changing. united airlines is canceling dozens of flights to chain next week. the santa clara public health department held a news conference to talk about its preparations and who they are

worried about specifically. >> i want to make a really important point. we're concerned about people who have traveled. we're not concerned about people who are from the chinese community or who have family members who have ever lived in china. >> right now a charter flight carrying americans is on its way to anchorage, alaska, from china. travelers on board are being screened for the virus. hospitals are prepared to treat and quarantine the infected. then the plane is scheduled to fly to california. wall street seems to have recovered from yesterday's coronavirus fears. the dow was up 187 points today. the nasdaq 130. and the s&p saw a solid 32-point gain. opening arguments ended today in president trump's impeachment trial. today the president's defense team warned that impeaching him would be dangerous. >> why not trust the american people with this decision? why tear up their ballots? >> senators now get up to 16 hours over two days to question

it's kind of cool out there tonight, under dry conditions. low temperatures dropping into the low to mid-40s. lots of fog developing, so the early morning commute could be a bit challenging. tomorrow by afternoon, we'll see hazy sunshine in most spots with high temperatures ranging from 60 at the coast to mid-60s inland. but it's going to get much warmer than that. look at the middle of this week on my accuweather seven-day forecast. thursday, friday, saturday, high temperatures climbing into the upper 60s first and then into the low 70s inland. and around the bay shoreline on friday and saturday, low 60s on the coast. that's pretty mild for late january. but then it cools down sharply on sunday. very sharply in fact, by about 8 degrees or so. by the way, in case you're wondering, the super bowl weekend forecast for miami looks like showers on saturday, the day before the game. but sunny and mild on sunday, the day of the game. >> even more of a reason to snatch up those good tickets to get out to miami. >> while they can. thanks very much, spencer. legendary mexican band los

good evening, everybody. we are live at the port of miami, the nfl holding a big pre-super bowl party for the media. let's talk 49er football, shall we? when the 49ers acquired jimmy garoppolo in a trade from the patriots, it really changed everything for the franchise because for the first time in a while, this team really had a potential franchise quarterback. yet the narrative the past couple of weeks in the playoff wins over the vikings and the packers have been the 49ers win with their rushing game, casting some doubts about the ability of jimmy garoppolo to throw the football. but as abc7's chris alvarez reports, niners players and coaches say, you know, if that's what you're thinking, maybe you ought to actually watch the games. >> the 49ers have run all the way to miami literally. they have been dominant on the ground game but you got to remember the quarterback, jimmy grob l garoppolo carried them during the middle of the season. richard short-te
