robocalls. the government does something it's never done before. important news for flu and cold season. why the fda has issued a warning about purell hand sanitizer. and later, getting emotional on the road. the new proposal to allow emojis on your license plate. good wednesday morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. we begin with the breaking news concerning the potentially deadly coronavirus spreading in china. for the first time a major airline is suspending all flights to and from china. >> in the meantime, a plane carrying americans who were evacuated from the city where the outbreak started has now been diverted. the flight stopped to refuel in alaska overnight before continuing on to southern california where all passengers are set to be processed this morning at march air reserve base east of los angeles. originally that flight was supposed to land in ontario, california.

there was no word overnight on why the flight plan was changed. >> their journey started at the deserted airport in wuhan, china. one man from rhode island flying from china with his family spoke to us from alaska. >> big cheer let out from the plane when we landed. we are set to go through customs and should be back, wheels up, in about three hours. tired, exhausted. mentally and physically, but happy to be back and just really grateful the united states government came through for us. >> after arriving in california, the passengers will be quarantined for three days. meanwhile, new precautions are being taken. british airways has now stopped all flights to and from mainland china, and the trump administration is not ruling out suspending all flights between the u.s. and china because of the outbreak. the virus is blamed for more than 130 deaths in china. >> and there's new evidence of the business impact the coronavirus is having beyond the airlines and tourism industry.

starbucks has now closed more than half of its locations in china at least temporarily because of concerns about the virus. well, now back here at home and to washington and the new phase beginning today in president trump's impeachment trial. senators will now get to ask questions. >> and in a major development senate majority leader mitch mcconnell now says he does not have enough votes to prevent witnesses from testifying at the trial. abc's andrew dymburt has the latest from capitol hill. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth and janai. yeah, so do the democrats have enough votes to call on witnesses? we're soon going to find out along with what questions senators have for both sides. >> that ends our presentation. >> reporter: the president's defense rests its case. >> you cannot impeach a president on an unsourced allegation. >> reporter: now the next phase of the trial begins, questioning and over the next two days senators will be allowed to submit questions to the house managers or the president's

counsel but not both. questions must be submitted to the chief justice in writing. >> mr. chief justice, i have reached an agreement with the democratic leader on how to proceed. >> reporter: but moving forward all the attention now centering around witnesses. republican leader mitch mcconnell telling his members in a closed door meeting that he does not have the votes to block them. four key senate republicans suggest they want to hear from former national security adviser john bolton. bolton's upcoming book links the president to withholding aid from ukraine in exchange for investigating joe biden. >> i think that bolton probably has something to offer us. so we'll figure out how we're going to learn more. >> reporter: and in another turn, the president's former chief of staff john kelly reportedly now saying, i believe john bolton, and suggesting bolton should testify saying, if there are people that could contribute to this, either innocence or guilt, i think they should be heard.

this while trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani on cbs news ripped bolton for his book. >> here's the only conclusion i can come to, and it's a harsh one, and i feel very bad about it. he's a back stabber. >> reporter: now the question portion of this trial could last eight hours today, eight hours tomorrow with that critical vote on witnesses possibly happening friday. now, if no new witnesses are allowed in this trial, then things could wrap up by the end of the week. kenneth, janai. >> all right, andrew dymburt there in washington. thank you. and this morning we're learning more about the iranian missile attack that targeted u.s. troops in iraq earlier this month. the pentagon now says 50 u.s. service members suffered traumatic brain injuries. that's up from 34 that u.s. officials recently reported. president trump last week said the injuries were not very serious. and we turn now to what could be a major development in the kobe bryant helicopter crash investigation. a new recording has surfaced that appears to capture the moment of the crash. >> it comes as investigators reveal new clues about what went

wrong. we must warn you, some viewers may find the audio disturbing. >> as the remnants of the wreckage are cleaned away from the hillside, investigators are revealing new details about the final moments of kobe bryant and those eight others including his daughter. >> the time from the descent to impact was probably about a minute. >> there was no black box in the helicopter and no recorder in the cockpit. but a woman living nearby has handed over this doorbell video to the ntsb, which appears to capture the sound of the crash. that video just one of many that could help investigators. just minutes earlier the aircraft was seen circling in the thick fog. bystanders could tell something was already wrong. >> it was like gunning its engine. it was really loud, and it was banking and turning really steep. >> reporter: the ntsb says it doesn't know why the chopper went into a steep dive, but

officials do know that the pilot, ara zobayan, was rapidly accelerating before taking a sudden turn, and he was still turning when the aircraft slammed into the mountainside. >> how much did they clear missing the mountain by? maybe 20, 30 feet. >> reporter: experts say the helicopter was falling far too fast to ever avoid the crash. the aftermath of the scene spread over a quarter of a mile. this morning, four of the nine victims on board have been identified including zobayan, john altobelli, sarah chester and bryant himself. officials have yet to i.d. the remaining victims including bryant's daughter, gianna. overnight shaquille o'neal emotional as he remembered his former teammate. >> the fact that we're not going to be able to joke at his hall of fame ceremony, we're not going to be able to say, ha, i got five, you got four, the fact that we're not going to be able to say, if we would have stayed together, we could have gotten ten. those are the things you can't

get back. >> reporter: o'neal later leading a chant outside the staples center. >> one more time, kobe -- [ crowd chanting ] shaq honoring his friend there. the ntsb says the helicopter did not have terrain warning systems but an ipad found in the wreckage could help determine what went wrong. well, no serious injuries have been reported after a magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit between cuba and jamaica. one man couldn't stop a shelf of bottles from falling in the cayman islands. students in jamaica had to take cover under their desks during the shaking, but no major damage has been reported. some high-rises in miami were even evacuated tuesday afternoon as a precaution. time now for a look at your weather for this wednesday morning. expect heavy rain in the deep south from new orleans into mississippi with lighter rain farther north that will taper off as it moves along the gulf

look at this video from eastern canada where they're still digging out from a record blizzard. the plows created this sort of snow tunnel in st. john's. the blizzard earlier this month dumped more than three feet of snow there. >> where do you park? a democratic super pac is taking aim at bernie sanders shelling out nearly $700,000 for negative ads just five days before the iowa caucuseses. the ads that will air across the state feature voters expressing doubt that sanders can beat trump and even raised concern about his recent heart attack. sanders fired back overnight saying the billionaire class is getting nervous. some polls show him leading former vice president joe biden in iowa. for the first time the justice department is fighting back against those annoying robocalls by going after the companies that allow them. the justice department has filed for temporary restraining orders against two groups of telecom carriers that allegedly allowed calls they knew were fraudulent. one company is accused of

fiancee explained why she didn't take part in the netflix series. we'll have that and much more on the interview later on "good morning america." the connecticut man accused of killing is estranged wife in critical condition after what police are calling a suicide attempt. they rushed to the home of fotis dulos after he was found in his car suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. he's charged with the murder of jennifer dulos would hasn't been seen since last may. fotis dulos did not show up for a bail hearing prompting officers to visit his home. he pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges. in medical news the fda is telling the company that makes a very popular hand sanitizer to clean up its act. it wants the maker of purell to stop claiming that the product can prevent diseases like ebola and the flu. the company has also claimed that purell can reduce student absenteeicism. the fda says it's not aware of any studies that support those claims. a teacher at a florida day care has been fired for using a marker to write on a toddler. the boy's mother says her
