that will impact drivers from oakland to orinda. 101, no problems there. san jose, 87 looking good. a big change going on on market street. >> private cars are banned from driving on a huge stretch of it. this is a live look at market street where the rule just went into effect. the no-vehicle zone is from van ness to the ferry building. cars can still cross market, but the ban applies to rideshare companies, too. taxis, commercial companies, transit vehicles can use the street. they're exempt. it is designed to make things safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

>> no one there is making a turn on to market street. >> they don't want a $200 ticket. >> at 6:02, so far so good. we're learning new details about the crash that killed kobe bryant. the ntsb now says a terrain warning system was not on board that helicopter. that system sounds an alert to warn pilots of impending impact. but it wasn't required to be on board the chopper, though the ntsb recommends that all such helicopters have one. investigators say the pilot slammed into a foggy hillside after a minute-long high-speed plunge. at this point it's unclear whether the pilot was in control of the aircraft. bryant, his daughter and seven others were killed. the lakers organization is struggling with the loss of kobe bryant and his daughter, gianna. last night's game against the clippers was postponed. rachel brown is outside the staples center this morning with that part of the story. >> reporter: good morning. an extremely difficult time for

the lakers organization. the team will be holding their first practice since learning the news of kobe's death. last night fans and former teammate shaquille o'neal gathered outside staples center. >> kobe! >> reporter: the lakers were scheduled to play last night. a remembering kobe tribute aired on tnt and shaq talked about the sharp pain he felt after learning about the news of the helicopter crash. shaq got extremely emotional at times, wiping tears from his eyes. shaq and kobe won three championships together. the famous three-peat in 2000, 2001 and 2002. >> we lost probably the world's greatest laker, world's greatest basketball player. just -- listen, people will say take your time, get better. but it's going to be hard for me. i already don't sleep any way. but i'll -- i'll figure it out. my condolences goes out to his

>> abc7 news reporter julian glover is live in miami this morning. hi, julian. >> yeah. there is a lot of hate going around for jimmy g. and maybe some folks out there doubting him and what his abilities might be. a lot of questions are surrounding how much jimmy g. will pass the ball come super bowl sunday. you recall in the nfc championship game he completed six passes, he threw for eight, and it ended up being raheem mostert who did the majority of the work running for 200 yards. that's because the franchise qb does not be in the limelight. he's happy supporting the team any way he can. that's what this squad will need heading into sunday because the chiefs, they're clicking, too. jimmy should never apologize running the ball too well. halfway through the year we had to open up games to start it out. people have to watch the whole season, they'll realize that's not the case.

car break-ins are a problem in the bay area. now multiple east bay cities are coming together to fight a spike in crime. a heads up if you use purell. why the federal government is issuing a warning today. and a live look at walnut creek, it's about 40 degrees right now. this is one of those areas like up in the north bay valley, 7 degrees warmer than average. san francisco is 3 degrees warmer. this is just the beginning actions speak louder than words.

coming up on 6:15, focusing on crime prevention is a big part of our effort to build a better bay area, that includes frustrating car break-ins. in the east bay police from albany to san leandro are joining forces to fight a recent spike. auto burglaries are spiking by double digits in oakland and other east bay cities where smash and grabs are often caught on security cameras. police agencies created a roving task force cracking down on high crime areas. officers will also target laptop thieves. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. the fda issued a warning to the company that makes purell hand sanitizer, stop making unproven claims. the fda has taken issue with the claim that purell can kill the ebola visit. officials are also concerned kills mers and other germs. the fda says only federally

a look at your forecasts. you will see conditions that are milder today under partly sunny skies as we transition into a long dry period with mild temperatures at least through saturday and then abruptly changing sunday into monday as the winter winds will blow back in. it won't bring rain. huge plume of moisture. the pineapple pipeline hitting the pacific northwest. we'll get high clouds blowing off from that as this high pressure will direct that moisture well up to the north. so let's see what our temperatures are and how they respond today. we have 60 in san francisco. we have 61 to 62 on both sides of the bay, down to mid 60s in the south bay, inland east bay, and up in the north bay valleys, until you get to lake port, cool and 57. tonight, fog and more so along the coast. temperature 50 in san francisco, 50 in half moon bay and san rafael. the rest of us about 43 in livermore to 49 in san mateo.

moving over to livermore, we have fog reported, also in pleasanton, be aware of that, low visibility. in san francisco, this is the big story this morning. market street changes and i'll send it over to kumasi with more. >> thanks. as she's been telling us, a big change to market street has finally arrived. just 30 minutes ago private cars were banned on a huge section of the road, roughly from van ness to the ferry building. amy hollyfield is live on market street with how things are going so far. good morning. >> good morning, kumasi. this is going to take some getting used to. we have seen some mistakes. we are at the intersection of market and davis. there are no patrols here, extra patrols guiding people. we have seen some at the next intersection at fremont. they appear to be roaming a bit. because there's no one at our intersection. we did see a mistake. watch this. a car turned right on to market street. this is not allowed anymore. no more private cars are allowed to drive on market street.

there are signs in place, telling people no turns, but, of course, there's no wall or barrier here preventing the turn. so we are seeing some of them happen. eventually they will write you a ticket but they're giving you a bit of a grace period. we talked to one of the first drivers impacted by this this morning. we asked him what he thinks. he wasn't too happy about it. did you know this is happening? you can't turn on market anymore. no private cars. what do you think? did you know? will this impact you? >> i did know, it will impact the city traffic. but the city doesn't make sense, so what's new? >> here is a map of the area where cars will be banned. it's about a two-mile long stretch of market from the ferry building down to van ness. you can cross market in your car, but you can't turn on to market. they're doing this to try to ease congestion and they want to make market safer for

to land at march air reserve base in riverside county. the plane stopped in alaska overnight to refuel. >> big cheer let out when we landed. we are set to go through customs and should be back, wheels up in three hours. >> the cdc examined each passenger twice to make sure they don't have symptoms. passengers will be quarantined for 72 hours once they land this morning. reggie? >> developing news of a murder investigation under way in east palo alto. police say neighbors living near moton circle called after they heard gunshots last night. a witness told police he saw someone slumped over at the wheel of a car. police found a body at the scene. they're investigating two other locations that may be related to the incident. police say they're still piecing together how everything is connected. so far they have not arrested anyone. this morning the ntsb says it doesn't know why kobe

bryant's helicopter went into a steep dive in calabasas. >> the agency does know the pilot was rapidly accelerating before taking a sudden turn and was still turning when the aircraft crash. >> the descent rate for the helicopter was over 2,000 feet a minute. we know that this was a high energy impact crash. >> the remains of all nine victims have now been removed from the crash site. >> one of san francisco's highest ranking officials is facing federal corruption charges along with a well-known restaurateur. san francisco director of public works, mohammed nuru is alleged to have provided lefty o'doul's owner nick bovis an advantage in the awarding of contracts. the complaint details an undercover fbi investigation with heavy surveillance. it alleges nuru and bovis were involved in a scheme to bribe a san francisco airport commissioner in exchange for that commission's assistance to win a contract for a restaurant lease at sfo.
