george had an answer to that last question that i posed. good morning, america. the super bowl four days away. as you know the ad wars are already on. >> we're going to have an exclusive preview on that coming up. we begin with the latest on the coronavirus. take a look. that's the plane evacuating more than 200 americans from wuhan china with families and diplomats on board. >> that plane landing in alaska overnight. it's diverted to a military base in california and there's a live look at the base there. this as cases of the coronavirus climb now. more than 6,000 around the world. >> at least 132 people have died. back here in the u.s., we have five confirmed cases. now the cdc is expanding screenings to 20 domestic airports. the white house reportedly considering banning all u.s. flights to china. will carr starts us off from riverside county, california, where that plane is bringing all those passengers. good morning, will. >> reporter: and, robin, this is a fluid situation.

that flight started in the hot zone in china. it landed overnight if alaska and now landing here in riverside county. there were 201 passengers on the plane and everyone quarantined for at least three days. authorities saying they're not taking any chances. >> we are finally boarding the plane. here is all 230 citizens who got a spot. >> reporter: overnight more than 200 americans evacuated touching down in alaska arriving in a chartered flight arranged by the u.s. patrick stockstill and his family were on that plane. the aircraft lined with rows of passengers in face masks. officials with hazmat suits on board as well. stockstill and his family thankful to be back in the states. >> we just touched down here stateside. big cheer let out from the plane when we landed. we are set to go through customs and should be back wheels up in about three hours for our final destination.

>> reporter: the stockstills and everyone else on the flight will now have to spend at least three days in quarantine. if any passengers show any symptoms they could be forced to stay up to two weeks or longer. so far five americans here in the united states have contracted coronavirus and authorities at 20 domestic airports will screen passengers for symptoms. >> americans should know that this is a potentially very serious public health threat, but at this point americans should not worry for their own safety. >> reporter: as the chinese take extreme precautions to prevent the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus, the white house is not ruling out suspending all flights between the two countries. british airways is already suspending all of their flights to and from china. we found out that all 201 passengers were screened. china and twice in alaska. they were all cleared to come here to california. when everyone on the flight found out, they started cheering.

amy? >> i'm sure a lot of relief there. will carr, thank you. the latest now on the investigation into the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant and eight others. federal investigators now say the chopper was missing a warning system on board and t.j. holmes is at the staples center in los angeles where the memorial for the lakers legend continues to grow. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: it continues to grow, robach. if you take a look at this, people leaving jerseys, candles, notes and flowers. tributes are going all over downtown for kobe bryant. but as you mentioned this investigation into the accident continues. yes, there was a warning system that wasn't necessarily required for this helicopter that some say could have helped it and helped the pilot understand how close he was to terrain. others say that wouldn't have helped because there was such a rapid descent and that is the focus of the investigation now. why there was such a rapid descent of this helicopter that resulted in what the ntsb calls a high impact crash.

a last sighting of the helicopter carrying kobe bryant, his daughter gianna and seven others just minutes before the deadly crash. the videos capturing the circling aircraft were taken at 9:30 a.m. sunday morning 15 minutes before the helicopter went radio silent. >> we know that the helicopter was at 2,300 feet when it lost communications with air traffic control. the descent rate for the helicopter was over 2,000 feet a minute. we know that this was a high energy impact crash. the helicopter was in one piece when it impacted the terrain. >> reporter: the investigation presses on. >> i was asked about terrain awareness and warning system, which provides terrain information to the pilot. i was asked whether that was on this helicopter. we have verified it was not. >> reporter: the coroner confirms all nine victims are now recovered from the scene in the pasadena hills.

"people" magazine vanessa bryant kobe's wife of 18 years is, quote, devastated by the loss of her soul mate saying, quote, she can hardly keep it together, adding she can't finish a sentence without crying. but she is working very hard to pull it together for the other girls. she now has to be the strong one. the bryant family one of several devastated by this tragic accident and at their season opener, a moment of silence. >> ladies and gentlemen, a moment of silence for john altobelli. >> reporter: honoring the orange coach college longtime head coach john altobelli, his wife keri and their daughter who all died in the crash. they have now, the investigators, collected all the evidence from the scene and the debris and turned it over to local authorities and now the work begins. we could have a preliminary report, robach, in about a week and a half into the crash but we can expect a final report on exactly what happened really much, much further down the road even up to a year or more. >> wow, all right, t.j., and we know so many stories are coming out now about kobe and his love

before they end the trial. our senior congressional correspondent marry bruce is on capitol hill. and mary, right now we don't have a firm vote of where the senators stand. >> reporter: we don't know where the fight is headed. this morning, it seems several key republicans are still undecided. that's why this next phase is so critical. senators will now have two days to ask pointed questions of both sides and at the end, they will have to decide. do they have enough information or do they feel they need to hear from additional witnesses? this morning, uncertainty on capitol hill. the pressure on to call former national security adviser john bolton to testify. >> the witness vote, i think, could easily be close. >> reporter: a firsthand witness bolton reportedly writes in his upcoming book that the president explicitly linked military aid to ukraine to investigations into his rivals. >> are we really going to require the country to wait until his book comes out to find out information that senators could have used? >> reporter: on twitter overnight the president asking

why didn't john bolton complain about this nonsense a long time ago when he was very publicly terminated? heai not that it matters, nothing. trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani with some blunt words for bolton. >> here's the only conclusion i can come to and it's a harsh one, and i feel very bad about it. he's a back stabber. >> reporter: all eyes on four key senate republicans who suggest they want to hear from bolton like senator lisa murkowski. >> i think that bolton probably has something to offer us. so we'll figure out how we're going to learn more. >> reporter: on the senate floor our team spotted republicans trying to sway the alaska senator. john thune, the republican whip, huddling with murkowski appearing to debate the issue of witnesses. meeting with republicans late yesterday leader mitch mcconnell warning his members that right now he does not have the votes to block additional witnesses. >> that ends our presentation. >> reporter: the president's legal team has now rested their case arguing this impeachment could set a perilous precedent.

control of a significant portion of the west bank without input from the palestinians. netanyahu says he accepts the u.s. proposal but mahmoud abbas blasted it saying, quote, we say a thousand noes to the deal of the century. george, breaking news overnight, the pentagon revealing 50 american service members suffered traumatic brain injuries in that iran missile attack, a dramatic increase from previous reports. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more on all this. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the power of those cruise missiles striking that base in iraq is still being felt. this morning, the pentagon now saying 50 u.s. service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury from that iranian missile attack. that's nearly five times what was originally announced with eight of those injured serious enough to be sent home to the u.s. for treatment. >> some conditions improved,

some got worse and some had severe enough symptoms that they were transported on for further treatment. they will continue to receive treatment in the united states either at walter reed or their home bases. >> reporter: the symptoms include headache, dizziness, sensitivity to light, restlessness and nausea, symptoms that president trump who initially said there were no injuries dismissed. >> no, i don't consider them very serious injuries relative to other injuries i've seen. >> reporter: those comments sparking outrage among some veterans groups. the vfw calling on the president to apologize for those, quote, misguided remarks. 31 of those who were injured have been returned to duty but traumatic brain injury has impacted hundreds of thousands of service members since 9/11. amy? >> thank you so much, martha raddatz. now to those new developments involving fotis dulos, the connecticut man charged with killing his estranged wife found after a suicide attempt. stephanie ramos has the story. >> reporter: this morning, fotis dulos, the man accused of

murdering his estranged wife and mother of five children, jennifer dulos, is in critical condition after his lawyers say he attempted suicide. police conducting a welfare check after dulos failed to appear in court for a bail hearing, finding him unresponsive in his connecticut home. >> they could see through a window that mr. dulos was sitting in his vehicle and he had obvious signs of medical distress. >> reporter: dulos was airlifted to a new york hospital and is being treated in a hyperbaric chamber for carbon monoxide poisoning. the 52-year-old was under house arrest out on $6 million bond facing a murder charge in the death of his wife jennifer who disappeared last may after dropping off their children at school. the couple had been in the middle of a bitter divorce and heated custody battle. dulos has always maintained his innocence. according to court documents investigators say security video shows a man they believe to be dulos riding a bicycle towards jennifer's home the day she vanished.

police think when she returned home, dulos was, quote, lying in wait, alleging he used zip ties to secure and incapacitate her. they said her blood was found in multiple locations in her home. jennifer's body has not yet been found. here at the hospital dulos is being treated with specialized oxygen therapy. his girlfriend, michelle troconis, and his former civil attorney have also been charged in connection with jennifer's death. guys? >> okay, thank you, stephanie. we switch gears to the super bowl. just four days away, a match-up featuring two quarterbacks with something to prove. victor oquendo has the highlights. >> reporter: it's been 50 years since the chiefs have appeared in a super bowl and the pressure is on. all eyes on 24-year-old patrick mahomes, the fifth youngest quarterback to start a super bowl in nfl history. >> it's awesome. i mean, just to be able to be here in this moment it's a tribute to the guys i have around me. i got put in a great situation

speculates on how his life unraveled, even his sexuality, has caused more pain for her and her daughter. >> you stood by aaron every step of the way. you stood by him then. do you still believe that your fiancee was innocent? >> yes, i -- of course, i do. i'd be a cold person to leave someone that had nobody else. >> reporter: aaron hernandez was on top of the world. >> touchdown to aaron hernandez. >> reporter: a bona fide superstar in the nfl with a $40 million contract to back it up. >> touchdown, hernandez. >> reporter: his arrest for the murder of his friend odin lloyd ending that dream. lloyd found shot to death near hernandez's home, and the mounting evidence against the football star resulted in his conviction. >> guilty of murder in the first degree. >> reporter: ultimately leading to hernandez taking his own life in 2017. prison officials calling his death a suicide. netflix's new docu-series "killer inside: the mind of

aaron hernandez" chronicling the former football star's life. >> now, the guy has a house. why does he need another apartment? >> reporter: this morning the former fiancee of hernandez is speaking out about certain claims made in the docu-series. what was in the documentary that shouldn't have been, in your opinion? >> i would have to say aaron's sexuality. you can't describe someone's sexuality without them being here. although i've had a child with aaron, i still can't tell you how he was feeling inside. no one can. >> do you want to comment at all on that aspect of this documentary and the rumors that had been there that aaron may have been bisexual or gay? >> if he did feel that way or if he felt the urge, i wish that i was told. i wish that he, you know, he would have told me because i

wouldn't -- i would not have loved him any differently. i would have understood. it's not shameful, and i don't think anybody should feel shameful on who they are inside regardless of who they love. i think -- i think it's a beautiful thing. i just -- i wish i was able to tell him that. >> well, what books am i going to be sending you, aaron? >> harry potter's. >> harry potter's? okay. >> the phone calls i know were painful for you to have to listen to, but they did make you feel like you knew him in a way that you didn't necessarily see, especially if you were just someone who tuned in for the games and then the courtroom. >> reporter: the series playing phone calls from prison between hernandez and his friends and family including from the couple's young daughter. >> it's just again very hard to hear, you know, especially with my daughter being a minor, hearing sacred --

>> her giggle, her laugh. >> yeah. those are things as a mother you want to keep to yourself. although they may not be played back, it's just -- it's hard. it's hard to listen to. >> were you approached by the documentarians to participate in this series? >> i was approached. they offered compensation for my participation, but i wanted to leave it in the past and let my daughter grow without her having to have bad memories to look back on. >> reporter: attorney jose baez who represented hernandez in court during a separate double murder trial, charges hernandez was acquitted of, taking issue with the docu-series he appeared in. >> i think they're trying to find a simple answer for a complex situation. his health was a huge factor. i mean i don't understand why we need to search around for an answer as to why he committed suicide when he was at an advanced stage of a disease where the primary symptom is suicide.

>> cte. >> yes. >> he had a posthumous autopsy. they looked at his brain. it was clear he had suffered from cte. >> and had severe brain damage. what more do you need to look at except to assume something? and i agreed to be part of the documentary based on a representation that certain people would be taken out that were discussing his sexuality and after i was done interviewing, they went back on that promise. and that's the issue i have. >> in the wake of the netflix series, hernandez's now 8-year-old daughter growing up in the shadows of controversy surrounding her late father. how do you describe aaron hernandez to your daughter? how do you want her to remember him? >> i would describe her father as a loving individual who obviously loved her. i think it's more bringing back the memories for her and let her form her own opinion and i think

that would be just enough to let her know. >> and netflix did not respond to abc news' request for a comment. but shayanna was saying since the docu-series came out and all fairly recent it's been tough, even walking down the halls of her daughter's school. but she said she feels the support from the community and she's just struggling with what comes next. will her daughter watch this eventually? all those things, now that it's out there, it stays out is there. >> now that the daughter is 8. she really expressed herself very well in the interview. >> i was very impressed with her and her love for aaron and her love for her family and her willingness to talk about things that are uncomfortable. >> yes, she did well. thank you, amy, so much. we'll switch major gears when we come back. we're going to have our "play of the day." come on back. e day." come on back. koreani koreaning screening jer passengers. as for that charter flight we know that all 201 passengers were screened both in china and in alaska. they were screened twice in alaska actually. they started cheering when they boarded and you can imagine they'll be screening louder when they touch down on ground. george? >> bet they did. will, thank you very much. we turn to the investigation into the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant and his daughter and seven others. federal investigators now say the chopper was missing a warning system on board. i want to go back to t.j. holmes at the staples center in los angeles. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: hey, good morning again, george. you're talking about what's called a terrain awareness and warning system. it lets a pilot know of an imminent impact. well, this hel have one, was not required to have one and there are questions now could it have even helped in this case given that this helicopter was at such a steep and rapid descent. the videos capturing the circle aircraft were taken at 9:31 a.m. sunday morning. 15 minutes before the helicopter went radio silent.

>> the descent rate for the helicopter was over 2,000 feet a minute. we know that this was a high energy impact crash. the helicopter was in one piece when it impacted the terrain. >> reporter: the investigation presses on. >> i was asked about terrain awareness and warning system which provides terrain information to the pilot. i was asked whether that was on this helicopter. we have verified it was not. >> reporter: overnight i spoke with kobe's former teammate and friend metta world peace. >> when i seen vanessa after he retired, i said i'm so happy for you and when he retired, man, i was so happy for vanessa because, like, she gets to have kobe now. >> reporter: i'm standing outside staples center where the memorial to gigi and kobe continues to grow. investigators have finished collecting evidence and debris and will now issue possibly a preliminary report in the next week and a half. but a final report, amy, is not expected. maybe up to the next 12 to 18 months. >> still a lot of questions out there, t.j., thank you.

we're taking the salsa to the extreme and pushing ingredients to really bring out the sugar, the sweetness, the juices. we're leaving the charred skins so it's nice and rustic and then, wait. we're using jalapenos two ways. we're using the fresh roasted jalapeno. but then we're adding chipotle. did you know that the chipotle sauce is the jalapeno. >> i did not. >> that's been smoked, dried and pickled in a tomato vinegar sauce. >> does it make it slightly less spicy? >> to die for. sweet and smoky, yes, so add the salt. >> done. >> and then, yes. >> pretend it works. there you go. okay. >> we get the idea. >> we get the idea. >> on the way. >> and then -- >> and then you have this. >> now we have to be careful so
