good afternoon. thank you for joining us. we're live in miami just outside the 49ers team hotel. ticket prices staggering. eye popping. some tips how to do super bowl on a budget. hive in market street where it is a brand new day. >> all private cars, vans and trucks including ride share vehicles are no longer allowed. >> the all-out ban runs nearly the lends of downtown from 10th street down to maine. >> kate larson joins us with a look at how things are going in the first day of the ban and reaction to it. >> reporter: well, this is a perfect example of what you'll see on market street right now.

we have a commercial vehicle parked right here. that's allowed. then look across the street and you can see a trolley a a all those are okay but what you won't see are private cars. that's what has changed here on this main drag of the city. with the ceremonial toll of the city bell, the san francisco thorough fare market street banned private cars on wednesday. >> this has been a long time coming. >> reporter: more than ten years. that's how long they've worked to make this closed to private cars, including uber and lyft. mayor breed and other city officials celebrated with a ryan down market street. >> mayor breed is driving. >> there is talk at city hall about potentially it a template for the transformation of streets across san francisco including valencia street in the mission district and levin worth

in the tender loin. >> this took so long and we know that there are some challenges. we want to see the results of the impacts on the street. we are hoping that this makes a difference as it relates to safety. we have to think with more efficiency. >> reporter: today traffic control officers made sure drivers go across market. not down it. and new signs that indicate the turns to private vehicles are no longer legal. bicycles, scooters, buss and taxils kept the road busy with a few rogue ubers or lyft that's didn't get or didn't like the new road rules. so where were the 200 to 400 cars that use market street during rush hour now that they're not allowed here? the question will be if mission street to the south and embarcadero to the east us will get a lot busier.

that remains to be seen. we drove down mission around 1:00 and it was quite busy. back to you. >> did you talk to any uber or lyft drivers? >> they're not so happy. folks driving in circles because they were trying pick up or drop off their passengers. if they need to go somewhere on market street, they can't get to the entrance of the building. so there is a lot of confusion about that. i spoke to a handicapped man in an uber car. he would have to walk a block or two so there's some fallout from this. we'll have to see how this goes before the city decides anything about making other streets no private vehicle areas. >> a learning curve here. >> check out market street today compares to market street from last week. this is market street where it expects near the embarcadero

b.a.r.t. station looking toward the ferry building. you can see cars headed down market. that video was shot last thursday. on the right side, today's video. no cars. overall, a lot less traffic. >> and we do know that you have questions so we have answers to the top seven questions on the website. >> that split screen is really interesting. a new report confirms something many bay area drivers already know. traffic is getting worse. not better. according to tom tom, the worst bring extra travel time in 2019. los angeles, saw a 42% increase this travel time. then came new york which went up by 37%. next, san francisco with a 34% increase. san jose and seattle tied for fourth with a 32% hike in extra travel time last year.

border patrol agents have discovered the longest smuggling tunnel ever. it has a rail and cart system, it has electrical cables is that panels as well as a drain ang system and an elevator at the entrance have the tunnel was first discovered in august of last year. crews have been working to map it ever since. the ton originates in tijuana, mexico, not far from otay messaa point of entry. it ends up in san diego county. this stunl five and a half feet tall and two feet wide and is about 70 feet below ground. remarkable. >> scary moments in west los angeles. a big fire broke out in a 25-story skyscraper near 405. it broke out on the sixth floor of the residential building and quickly spread to the seventh. it left eight people injured. one of them is in critical

condition. most suffered smoke inhalation. they had on rescue a man who tried escaping the flames by climbing along the ledge of a sixth floor window. some of the other residents were evacuated off the roof by the fire department's helicopters. sonoma county began clearing people after a judge declined to stop the sweeps. a public interest group asked a federal judge to intervene clearing the trail. the judge declined to intervene. county workers have been doing outreach along the trail before a friday deadline set by the board of supervisors to clear out that trail. advocates for the homeless are demanding to stay, saying they've carved out a community for themselves. we see a hap hazard parsed together under clear response. >> a public health hazard.

it has become a safety issue. >> it is where the county has set up a temporary camp site with 60 single occupancy sheds to house those displaced from the trail. so far 30 people are moving to that location voluntarily. new details have been released in a kidnapping case that left a bay area tech executive safe. >> yes. new video now and a reward is being offered. tushar atre was found shot to death hours later in the cruz mountains. >> reporter: this afternoon, an unsolved murder from last fall has many in the community shaken. >> it keeps everybody on edge. as a community, we're very tightknit. >> reporter: investigators say the tech executive tushar atre was taken from his home on october 1st of last year and then forced into his

girlfriend's vehicle. he was found hours later in the santa cruz motts so cal san jose road dead from a single gunshot. today the sheriff's office investigators released new information including the path they believe the vehicle took following the kidnapping. >> we are all committed to solving this awful crime and bringing the people responsible to justice. >> the sheriff's office release nude video of a person of interest seen near his home three hours before the kidnapping. look closely. it shows someone riding a bike up, appearing there. >> we have someone looking at the property. it is just not normal. that's why we want to talk to this person and find out the answers. they're hoping the reward of $200,000 will help crack the case. one friend of atre's says he
