wuhan. >> reporter: this morning, back on american soil. but a long way from home. >> it felt great to get back to the states. >> reporter: patrick stockstill, his wife and young son were on board the flight that evacuated nearly 200 americans from wuhan, china, ground zero of the coronavirus outbreak. >> when we first stepped on board my jaw dropped. i've never seen a plane set up like that before. it was a wide open cargo plane but had passenger seats in it and honestly it felt like something out of a movie. >> reporter: crews wearing protective white suits greeted the passengers as they landed at this military base in california. stockstill's wife was forced to leave her family behind in china. >> i didn't have a choice, and i feel so bad that they are still stuck in china. >> reporter: meanwhile, the number of cases now growing worldwide with at least 170 deaths and more than 7,700 people infected. all but 68 of the confirmed cases are in china. airlines around the world are not taking any chances suspending or scaling back flights to and from china

including delta, american and united. and tesla is the latest company to close a facility in china because of the outbreak shutting down its factory in shanghai until further notice. as for the stockstills they'll be quarantined until at least this weekend at that military base along with the rest of the passengers before they can finally head home to rhode island. >> asked the first customs guy i saw, where is the nearest u.s. soil i could kiss. 25 students in los gatos will not be going to china. their school canceled the trip amid the coronavirus coronavir they have been sending students to china for the last ten years. kobe bryant's wife, vanessa bryant, says her family is completely devastated and she's thanking the millions of fans who have shown support following the helicopter crash that killed her husband and 13-year-old daughter. seven others also died. yesterday l.a. clippers star ka

days now. it's practically impossible not to see the stepped up security pretty much everywhere. we've see patrols, additional officers on foot and of course mobile command units being set up across the city of miami. back at the stadium, customs and border protection is examining cargo trucks coming into hard rock. each driver is checked. the trucks go through an x-ray and police k-9s are sniffing out to pent initi potential problems. homeland security conducted mock attacks and say federal, state and local law enforcement are all prepared. >> there's no specific and credible threat to the super bowl. it's a high-risk and iconic american event. >> there is also an app called safer watch forefans to download and report suspicious of course law enforcement

know. the world health organization is meeting to determine if the coronavirus should be called a global health crisis. the americans who evacuated wuhan, china and landed in southern california yesterday are currently under quarantine. san jose police are investigating a shooting. police found the victim in a car at the 76 gas station on lee avenue just before 1:30 this morning. the victim's condition is said to be life threatening. the san francisco director of the department of public works may soon be out of a job. today supervisor matt haney will be calling for the immediate firing of mohammed nuru after he was implemented in a corruption scandal along with restaurateur nick bovis. number four, vanessa bryant says her family is completely devastated since the helicopter crash that killed nine people including her husband, kobe bryant and her 13-year-old daughter. above-average temperatures. we're moving up the scale even

her children have not been seen since september. she and her husband left idaho in november under suspicious circumstances. bolting one day after authorities conducted a welfare check looking for the kids. after other family members contacted authorities, concerned that they had not heard from them. she and her husband were last seen wednesday in hawaii. police tracking them down this weekend, serving them with a court order, while cameras from east idaho news rolled. >> where are your kids? >> no comment. >> reporter: coming up at 7:00 a.m., lenny depaul weighs in on this case. i'm will reeve, abc news, new york. in los angeles, officials say there were not sprinklers in a 25 story apartment building that caught re. toluck stranded tenants from a roof and ledge. the flames started on the 7th floor affecting the 5th through thealth floor. the most of the patients had smoke inhalation.

six had to go to the hospital. two firefighters were injured. the active shooter scare and lockdown at tamalpais high school this week was because of a snapchat video. the sheriff's office says 21-year-old michael kessler turned himself in. he was the man people spotted around campus on monday carrying what looked like a gun. detectives found the ak-47 replica, which was actually an air soft gun with tape over the orange tip. authorities say kessler is a former tam high student and he was there to record a snapchat video. we are hearing from a woman who is making history at the super bowl. >> 49ers assistant coach katie sauers is the first female game to make it to the championship game. >> it's not just men that can lead men. it's not that women can lead men, but people can lead people if they're true leaders. >> she grew up loving sports, especially football. in a new microsoft commercial

groundhogs day, super bowl day, a few showers possible near the coast. most of us will remain dry. high pressure sets up once again and look what it does. as we head through next week. it keeps the storm track ahead of us once again. now to an important alert for parents. four didn't brands are now recalling about 165,000 inclined infant sleepers because of safety concerns. they pose a suffocation risk for babies. the consumer product safety commission says the recall impacts sleepers from graco, evenflo and delta children. no injuries have been reported. the cpsc recommends parents to stop using the incline sleepers immediately. this follows a big fisher-price recall last april that was tied to more than 30 deaths. netflix may be getting ready to let go of some of its employees. netflix is overhauling its marketing strategy and laying off some employees in the

>> now it's impacting sfo. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live there with the story. >> one person resigned in the midst of this scandal, another person's job is on the line today. let's start with the impact here at the airport. linda crayton has resigned as airport commissioner. she said she is doing so for health reasons. airport authorities say she was offered $5,000 in exchange bid to open a restaurant in the airport. >> it's time for the board of supervisors and the mayor to get behind it and put controls in place so this behavior cannot happen. one of those things is that

individuals involved in unethical behavior should stand down. while the individual did not take the bribe, it's not appropriate for them to continue as airport commissioner. now on to today's developments, matt haney is planning to call for the firing of public works director mohammed nuru today and he wants an investigation into the public works department. nuru and nick bovis face up to 20 years in prison on corruption charges. haney will announce this at a press conference today saying he wants to root out any potential corruption in city government. reporting live at sfo, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. the question still remains this morning will new witness testimony be allowed in president trump's impeachment trial. today senator also have another opportunity to question both sides before a possible vote tomorrow. democrats have been pushing to hear from former national security adviser, john bolton.
