>> yeah! >> oh, yeah. they're ready. excited 49ers and police are heading to miami for super bowl sunday. getting into the game. and security is ramping up for the super bowl. not just in miami but here in the bret baier as well. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> let's get right to our super bowl coverage where we have team coverage from coast to coast with abc7 news reporters, amanda dell castillo of. >> and larry starts us off. hi, larry. >> reporter: welcome to the essex house hotels. and right here direct from san francisco, we have the beena vista cafe pop up. they're serving their san francisco specialty drink, the irish coffee that everybody loves. now, this place was packed only

a few minutes ago. unfortunately, snoop dogg has got a concert about 100 yards away. miami beach is right there behind us. everybody cleared out and they went to listen to snoom daugavins. it is about to get loud in a few moments. coming up in the next hour, we'll have a profile of the first female coach in super bowl history, katie who works for the 49ers. and the story of a man whose doctors just cleared him to fly for super sunday following brain surgery. we'll begin with two performers who are arguably the most popular people we're going to see on super bowl sunday. >> we've been working really hard. the teams all year. >> wasn't until 4:00 in the morning, trying on a pair of shorts. and kind of teary because they didn't fit right.

>> reporter: you know, the same thing happened to me. j lo and shakira talked about it. they say they're nervous but excited to challenge assumptions for we will of different backgrounds and ages. shackeera will turn 23 on super bowl sunday. what a birthday. and j lo is 50. there is a lot of media attention as we keep the female theme on one particular, thank you, somebody chanting. a lot of attention on one specific assistant coach for the 49ers, and her name is kate sauers. the niners. she was in a football league for years so things the game. we have talked with a bunch of

players. they all love katie sowers.sowe. >> she does so many little things. the average personal would never know about. we see her in the hall ways, the coach's office. she's a grinder, man. that's why i appreciate her. >> the barriers she's breaking alone, it is cool to see and inspiring. i mean, what was it? the start of playoffs, seeing her microsoft commercial on tv. i was all happy. no way. that's awesome. >> she's one of the coaches. i don't really put too much emphasis. she's a female coach. she's just one of the coaches. >> she does everything everybody else does. >> her work ethic is incredible. one of my favorite things when i walk in at 7:15 for my meetings, she's in her office chugging along trying on prepare us, when you see stuff like that, it is

fun to have her around. >> reporter: she's become so popular that they've limited her media access. a lot of fans have flown in today for super sunday. miami beach is packed. and one fastball in particular needed his doctor's approval to come the this game following brain surgery. let's bring in abc7's amanda del castillo who is live on the beach. amanda! >> reporter: yeah. it is lively over here on ocean drive. i have to tell you, the castillo family, the story that you're about to hear about, they just flew in from san jose. i met them to south beach earlier today. this trip, that flight, it is all a big step after a major medical scare. the castillo family made it to miami. the san jose natives are 49er super fans and ticket holders as faithful as it comes.

but that faith was challenged. his world went black. >> i wake up and i'm on the floor. >> reporter: he suffered a brain had situation. >> we didn't know for sure. i don't remember it but my wife is telling me, they didn't know for sure how i would come out of it. >> it was just a shock. we weren't sure if he was going to make it. >> reporter: from his hospital bed, recovery with a side of red and gold. over four weeks albert overcame hurdle of a hurdle. eventually he was cleared to travel. behind the scenes, the super bowl was their next stop. >> he goes, dad, i'll take you to the super bowl. probably going to be too expensive. don't worry about it. we're going to the super bowl. >> his eyes lit up like a little kid. yeah. we're going to beat the packers and we'll go to the super bowl and i'll get our tickets. >> reporter: a special surprise for the husband and father of four. a man who helped build the home of the 49ers at levi stadium.

a man whose family is bringing that faith down to south beach. >> we always had a strong faith. yeah. we're just really happy to be here. >> that comes with the territory, huh? faith? faithful? >> yeah. faithful then, faithful now. we're ready to go. >> just incredible. albert tells me he is still working his way to 100%.100%. . the doctors say he should accept a full recovery. >> how cool would it be for him to see a niners victory? officials in san francisco are getting ready for the possibility of a niners win. of course, they would have to make some parade plans as well but we'll put that off for now. there is talk about the possibility of closing down some streets in the city if the 49ers do win. let's get tom part of story in san francisco live with aibls

7's cornell bernard. >> reporter: yeah, anticipation is building. niner gear is selling out. check this out. just got this hat and these plates. not too bad. party stores here selling anything and everything super bowl. lots of preparations underway to keep super bowl sunday safe for everybody across the city. >> it will be like that times 100 on sunday, where the niner game will convernal to watch the super bowl. a special 49ers menu on tap for a hungry crowd. >> you'll be selling a lot of this stuff. >> i'm sure. people get hungry and cream a lot so we're prepared. >> reporter: in the mission district, barrel proof is ordering lots of food and drink offering the faithful a perfect place to watch niner victory. >> we've got 28 televisions. we'll have a limited menu.

a whole bunch of people. it will be nuts. >> reporter: nuts is what the city is getting ready for. starting at halftime, i plans to close mission street. not far from where some rowdy crowds got a little carried away in 2014 when the giants won the world series. police in riot gear showed up to keep the peace. the chp will be out in force sunday. they urge everyone not to drink and drive. >> if you are going to partake in alcoholic beverages or anything that might impair you while you're driving, just to anticipate and everybody sure you have a designated driver. >> yeah. >> reporter: the chp said last super bowl sunday 200 people got duis across the state and three people lost their lives so be careful and make a plan for super bowl sunday. live in san francisco. abc7 news. back to you in miami.

part of building a better bay area includes they know homeless. >> one way officials hoped to make a difference was with the controversial navigation center along the embarcadero. the center opened one month ago today and we wanted to know how the community was feeling about their new neighbors. kate? the. >> reporter: well, ama, dan, for most of last year, the idea of this navigation center set off a debate throughout san francisco. now that it's here and open, it has been surprisingly quiet to many people in the neighborhood. though the not everyone is happy. for the first time since they

opened their doors one month ago -- >> mostly couples on this side. >> reporter: we got a look at the much disputed navigation center. steve good is the key of the nonprofit that operates the shelter. >> we literally want to treat the guests like they're coming into a hotel. if we don't treat them appropriately with almost and dignity, off them something to eat and drink when they come in. >> reporter: except the guests are searched and wanded when they come and they anywhere to go. beds, bathrooms, laund rirgs kitchen and pet friendly courtyard. they plan to slowly ramp up to the facility's 200 person capacity by june. >> this first month, all signs are good. >> reporter: ellis rodgers helps shelf lives a few blocks away and said the neighborhood feels safe since the opening. >> one woman at one of our recent advisory group meetings

said i've never seen beal street look cleaner. >> reporter: but he says the area has changed. >> people i've noticed at night, there are a lot more drugged out looking people. >> reporter: there have been numerous needle sightings like the two weeks ago. to their credit, lee said they have been responsive to complaints. >> i think normally 311 says they take 12 to 24 hours but people there the center clean it up well before that. >> reporter: but the navigation center doesn't attract people from outside the area, but some neighbors disagree. and i spoke to a homeless person today, just around behind the center which offers evidence to the contrary. we'll have all of that at 6:00. live at the embarcadero. abc7, back to you. a major development in the 25-year fight over what to do with a scenic and valuable piece

of east bay property. it is at point molate just north of the richmond san jose bridge. both sweeping views of the bay and the city of san francisco. eric thomas has details about what might be built there. >> we might be breaking ground here in less than two years. >> reporter: one local author calls at this time most beautiful spot you've never heard of. nestled between the bay and the richmond hills, the mayor says it is the idea for an ideal place to build housing. >> they're looking at anywhere from 600 or 700 dwelling units to over on 1,000. >> actually, some say they're planning literally more than a thousa thousand. >> we're proposing 1261 homes which would include single family homes, town homes detached, and attached.

>> reporter: so it is mostly undisturbed since the navy left in the mid 1990s and sold to it the city of richmond for $1. since then are have been proposals to keep it at open space and to open an indian casino here. the tribe settled in an agreement that will end in 2020. a group of local black businessmen is behind the housing development. >> we think this project presents some opportunity. the commitment to local hiring and to affordable housing. >> reporter: but a local environmental group disagrees. they point out the chevron refinery is right over the hill with the potential for flairs, leaks and fires. they also open the homes will be for the well to do and leave most richmond residents behind. >> the people of richmond, working class, predominantly poor people deserve the same thing the people of san francisco and marin have.

high quality park land. >> reporter: the alliance is suing to block the plan and with that april deadline looming, the clock is ticking. in richmond, eric thomas. abc7 news. in san francisco, another project working to build a better bay area, a new housing development opened to residents today. the avery has both luxury condos and affordable housing under one roof. developers worked to put in 150 affordable housing apartments. we want to hear your idea about building a better bay area. storms we have in january certainly helped catch us up. we're still below average for both uranium and snow. officials measured 40.5 inches of snow today near south lake tahoe. that's about 79% of average for this location. this time last year, we were at 98% of normal. these results come in as the u.s. drought monday or the releases the latest conditions across the state.

cloing near golden gate. it is still mild in many locations sfifl at santa rosa, 68 at fairfield, and mid 60s at napa, concord and livermore. and a lovely view showing a found high clouds. lots of blue sky from the bay. had partly cloudy with patchy morning fog. mild to warm again tomorrow but breezy and much cooler over the weekend. we have wave heights rising again. a beach hazard statement in effect through 11:00. most wave heights right around ten feet. and there is a chance of sneaker waves and rip currents and breakers could be at 20 feet or higher. the lows as patchy fog develops will be in the upper 40s. then tomorrow's highs under sunny skies, will raise from mid 60s at the coast to upper 60s around the bay shoreline. we've got quite a mild day

coming our way. that may be the last one tomorrow. looking at the future radar, you can see high pressure will remain in control of our weather into the weekend. it will start to weaken as a trough develops saturday. it will bring us some moisture, close to the bay area on sunday and monday. we're not really calling for rainfall yet. it will cool down. that will be replace bid a second high pressure ridge building in early next week of the it won't bring us warmer weather but it will keep us dry. the current dry spell will ten until about february 8th. so here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. mainly sunny skies tomorrow and saturday. although cooldown will begin on saturday and it will get even cooler under breezy to windy conditions. a very chilly morning on monday. it will be afternoon highs in the mid 50s. not much change on tuesday. we get slightly warm he or milder weather he toward the end

with the iowa caucuses coming up in four days, democratic presidential candidate andrew yang is getting a couple of boosts. >> he has qualified for next week's presidential debate hosted by abc news. >> the campaign has been surprisingly successful and resilient. >> going behind the cameras. >> you remember when andrew yang came here last march. it was one of his earliest tv interviews. to tell you the truth, not many people, not even us, took him all that seriously in the campaign. what we didn't foresee, he foster ad group of super passionate and tech savvy

michael bloomberg and probably from biden and everybody else. he goes with the internet. he doesn't even have the money for that but his volunteers can sit and they can push that out. and it is interesting to note. if he does well in iowa, iowa is the land of upsets. not necessarily the land of the nomination but it is where do you better than expectations, you're a winner. if do you less than expected, you're not. he has young people. they can stay up all night pushing the cause and that with berniey's troops. >> he told us he plans to continue through super tuesday. go all the way. many of them say that. realistically, you mentioned iowa. some of the early states, how well does he have to do? does he have to win or place in the top three? just get one delegate? >> he has to place high, medium in iowa or medium in new hampshire, in the early states. he has to maintain the momentum.

an east bay couple is paying special tribute to kobe bryant. it can only be seen from the sky. this 92-foot wide, it was made using turf printer technology.

journey of the scene. every year to create an image. what i tried to do is focus more on making it look good and the legibility of the letters, a little less. so a lot of times if you're in the middle of somebody's face, it is really hard to find the word in there. it is also sometimes fun to try to find where the word goes. it starts up here and then it goes to his eyebrows. for the new york pieces, did i te new york city skyline. i wrote out the streets and neighborhoods for all five burroughs and made sure i got all the major landmarks. the world trade center, the statue of liberty. i made sure that i got a good angle. frank sinatra, the lyrics to i did it my way, and both baseball teams, old yankee stwamd the
