>> reporter: good morning, janai and kenneth. the sense here on capitol hill is the end is in sight. sources tell abc news the senators are exhausted. few of them are taking notes anymore, but there's nothing set in stone just yet. key republican senators weighing in overnight on the issue of witnesses signaling to republicans the impeachment trial may soon be over. >> they are really grasping at straws at this point, and it's time to vote. >> reporter: republican senator lamar alexander who is not running for re-election saying he will vote against having witnesses appear in a statement saying there is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven, and while he calls the president's actions inappropriate, he says it does not meet the constitution's high bar for an impeachable offense. but republican senator susan collins says she will vote to allow witnesses. senator mitt romney also says he's interested in hearing from witnesses, but senator lisa murkowski is still on the fence. >> we need four republican senators to grow a backbone.

>> reporter: in thursday's marathon session, murkowski and others asking whether bolton's allegations would rise to the level of pitchable offense even if true. >> therefore for this and other reasons his testimony would add nothing to this case. >> reporter: former national security adviser john bolton in his upcoming book reportedly claims the president withheld aid to pressure ukraine to investigate political rival joe biden and his son. at a rally in iowa thursday night, the president seeming unfazed. >> but the democrats are trying to overturn the last election. we will make sure that they face another crushing defeat. >> reporter: and there will be more debate later this afternoon on witnesses then a vote. if there are 51 votes that could move to closing arguments and we could see an acquittal vote on president trump as early as tonight or tomorrow morning. kenneth, janai. >> all right, megan, we will keep watch.

megan, thank you there on capitol hill. we turn to the breaking news overnight about that potentially deadly virus spreading in china. >> the u.s. state department has issued a new advisory warning americans not to travel to china because of the coronavirus and this comes as the first human-to-human case is confirmed here in the u.s. this morning, a prediction about the coronavirus is coming true. >> this second case did not travel to china. >> reporter: doctors in chicago now confirming the nation's sixth case of coronavirus, but this is the first person-to-person transmission. >> we do not have sign of spread in the general public at this time. >> reporter: officials say the man is married to a chicago woman who was already diagnosed. he was placed in isolation tuesday, the same day he developed symptoms, but unlike his wife and the other americans infected, he had not been to china. >> public health officials are investigating locations where this second patient has visited in the last two weeks and any close contacts who were possibly exposed. >> reporter: as health officials

declared a global emergency thursday, this was the scene outside pharmacies across asia where stores are running out of facemasks. china is now reporting nearly 10,000 cases of the virus. more than 200 people have now died. hundreds of americans are still stuck in the chinese city where the outbreak began including priscilla dickey and her daughter. >> it's an interesting feeling. you're trapped. you are isolated. >> reporter: the u.s. state department has now raised its china travel advisory to a level 4, do not travel. its highest level. the union representing pilots at american airlines is suing the company to stop flights to china where pilots at delta and united are being allowed to refuse flights without pay. a top white house adviser says it's up to the airlines whether to suspend service. >> we're leaving it on a voluntary basis. i think our view which is the same as the airlines, if it's

not absolutely essential, don't do it. don't fly. that's our basic view. >> reporter: other airlines have stopped giving passengers pillows, blankets and magazines in hopes of reducing the risk. and u.s. authorities are scheduling another flight to wuhan, china, as early as monday to evacuate americans. nearly 200 people who returned this week are still under quarantine at a california military base. southwest airlines is denying claims that it sacrificed safety to keep planes in the air. the draft of a new government report claims they flew more than 17 million passengers on planes with unconfirmed maintenance documents in the last two years. those planes were boeinging 737s that the airline acquired from foreign carriers. southwest says any implication that it would tolerate relaxed safety standards is, quote, absolutely unfounded. the owner of the helicopter that crashed killing kobe bryant has now suspended all flights indefinitely. a preliminary report on the cause of the crash could be ready within two weeks. a local newspaper reports the

company operating the flight was involved in three prior crashes dating back to 1985. two of them were blamed on engine failure. the mayor of los angeles says the city is now making plans for a memorial to honor kobe bryant. the lakers will play their first game tonight since the crash and the nba is changing the format of the league's all-star game to pay tribute to kobe. history is being made overseas today as britain formally leaves the european union. prime minister boris johnson, the face of the brexit campaign, calls it the dawn of a new era. but only minor changes are expected after today because of only a transitional period will begin. britain will no longer be part of the eu summits and meetings and 73 people working at the eu parliament will lose their jobs. but the other tough decisions including trade deals have not been formalized. time now for a look at your weather for this friday morning. on the radar right now

storms are moving through the south bringing heavy rain along the gulf coast. those storms will move into the florida panhandle and carolinas later today. looking at today's high temperatures, we'll see the 40s on the east coast, 30s around the great lakes. not bad for the last day of january. 56 degrees and more rain in seattle. 79 in miami where the countdown to super bowl sunday is under way. here's a live look at hard rock stadium there all lit up. the forecast for kickoff on sunday, sunny, mid-60s. coming up, the new proposal that would require one charger be made for all cell phones and tablets. also ahead, the man who plotted to steal one of the most important documents in human history. plus, prince harry loses his fight with a tabloid newspaper concerning his instagram photos. but first an idaho mother fails to meet a police deadline in the search

whoa. we are back with a scene that could be from an alfred hitchcock movie. thousands of grackles making themselves at home in this parking lot in houston. large groups of the birds are not uncommon in that area especially this time of year. >> terrifying. a mother from idaho has failed to meet a deadline to prove that her two missing children are safe. lori vallow failed to produce her 17-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son who have been missing since september. she and her new husband chad daybell were seen in hawaii this week. family members believe vallow joined a religious group founded by daybell who has written books about doomsday. they say they're not surprised vallow missed thursday's deadline. >> how do you not know where

your child is, number one, so she says, and how do you not have them for four months? what kind of mother does that? the only word that has come into my mind right now is a monster. >> lori vallow could now face civil or criminal contempt of court charges. overseas a man has been convicted of trying to steal an original copy of the magna carta. he used a hammer to smash the case housing the document inside a cathedral in england causing $18,000 in damage. the magazine magna carta dates back to 1215 and lays the framework for modern democracy. thankfully the parchment was not damaged. how about jeff bezos, he's already the world's richest man, and he's coming off a massive payday. the amazon founder made about $13 billion in a matter of moments thursday. that's because the company reported better than expected earnings, which sent amazon stock surging higher. and jeff bezos is one of the few people who could afford this

type of northern lights. a phenomenon called the dunes was spotted in the skies over finland. scientists hope the finger-like formation will help them study a mysterious part of earth's atmosphere that's too high for planes and too low for satellites. looks pretty cool. we turn now to the teenager in michigan who nearly lost his life to a vape pen. >> he is speaking out after becoming the first to need a double lung transplant because of e-cigarettes. he's warning others to not make the same mistake he did. this morning a teenager in michigan is learning how to breathe again after an emergency double lung transplant believed to be the first such surgery as a result of vaping. >> i want to make the most out of that and make sure no one else makes the same mistakes i did. >> daniel ament was a healthy high school athlete who loved to sail and dreamed of becoming a navy s.e.a.l. the 17-year-old says he started vaping in december 2018.

he tells "good morning america's" paula faris he didn't own his own vape pen, so he didn't vape as much as his friends. >> just weekends, maybe a few times during the day but like at lunchtime if i was with people but it would only be like hitting it once and then giving it back to them. >> but in early september 2019 daniel started feeling sick, and his health quickly deteriorated. >> so just a lot of fatigue. i had a fever of 104 the next morning and a headache and i just felt really sick. i went to the er that night because i felt like i couldn't breathe. >> more than 2,700 people have been hospitalized and 60 have died due to vaping-related illnesses in the u.s. while experts still aren't sure on the cause of the illnesses, they have been linked to thc, the active ingredient in marijuana and a memorial in some e-cigarettes called vitamin e acetate. daniel admits to vaping both thc and nicotine and placed him on

life support for most of his 40 days in the hospital and only gave him a 10% chance of living before the double lung transplant. he says while he's grateful to be alive, his new life will be forever altered. >> i have to take over 20 medications a day. i have a lot of restrictions on what i can eat. i have to wear a mask in public for at least a year. i can't travel for a year. >> daniel's doctors also speaking out about the condition that his lungs were in. more from him coming up later on "gma." a connecticut man charged with killing his estranged wife has now died by suicide. fotis dulos was being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning since tuesday when police found him unresponsive inside a car in his garage. they did not find a suicide note but say there was a document from dulos maintaining his innocence. investigators believe dulos murdered his wife jennifer back in may after she dropped their children off at school. his lawyer says he'll continue trying to clear his client's name. >> as to those who contend that mr. dulos' death reflects a consciousness of guilt, we say no.

we say it was more a conscious -- a conscience overborn with the weight of a world that was too busy to listen. >> jennifer dulos' blood was found on items allegedly linked to her husband, but her body has not been found. prince harry has lost a complaint against a british tabloid over coverage of animal photos posted on instagram. he filed the complaint against "the mail" on sunday last year after the newspaper published an article claiming the prince failed to reveal that the animals had been tethered and drugged. he filed a complaint with the press standards organization questioning the article's accuracy, but the watchdog group has sided with the newspaper dismissing the complaint. from the duke to the duchess of sussex, meghan markle has a royal doppelganger. this woman in missouri says people are stopping her on the street mistaking her for the duchess. akeisha land says her instagram account has been flooded with people noticing their

(vo) get set up right with a live bookkeeper with intuit quickbooks. that breaking news is in san francisco, where a person, as you can see here, trapped inside of a vehicle after a crash at a gas station. nearly three dozen firefighters rushed to the scene and used the jaws of life to save him. >> this just happened within the past hour at 19th avenue and junipero serra boulevard. that's where we find amy hollyfield live with what's happening. >> good morning. look at this scene. you won't believe it. look at that car. it must have hit fast and hard. it's a system that controls the vapors from the gas that is stored under ground.

it did catch on fire and there was a leak fire crews were worried about. firefighters got the fire out and controlled the threat and the concerns about that leak. other firefighters worked to get the victim out of there, the driver. it took a while. they said they had to cut the roof off of the car, but still then had to use the jaws of life to get him out of there. they took him to the hospital. he was conscious the whole time, he did survive the crash, we don't know his condition at this time. i asked if there's a public threat right now as far as gas leaking, they said no. they are hoping to get the area reopened within the next half hour. so, the threat, the scare is over. now just the aftermath, the investigation. i asked and they think he was under the influence but they're still investigating that. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thanks. >> scary looking. >> yes.

it's 4:28. if you're just waking up, let's get you an update on weather and traffic >> we have fog out there. this is napa this morning, american canyon and vallejo. we have thick fog. down to a quarter mile visibility in this area. it's not only there, but also, as you can see, down in the south bay. around santa clara on campbell and willow glen. this will continue to spread heading through the morning hours. expect this to be an issue as we get deeper. you can see it pulling that tule fog along 37 and heading over towards novato. let's look at temperatures as you step outside, 41 in fairfield. we have 51 in oakland. 52 in san francisco. about a few degrees cooler than yesterday. near record highs this afternoon with upper 60s to 70 inland. mid to upper 60s around the bay
