that. amy? >> good morning. the car is embedded in this structure. you have to see this to believe it. there is a tow truck here now, tough task ahead. having to pull that car out of there. firefighters say it was very difficult to rescue the driver. around 3:00 a.m. they got a car hit a building, but it wasn't a building, it was a structure on the chevron property. they had a fire and some kind of leak. 33 firefighters were on the scene trying to put out the fire, monitor the air for environmental threat and rescuing the man. the chief on scene moments ago explained to us what that car hit. >> that structure is part of the system thatwithdraws the vapors of the tank. that's part of that system. it did provide us with a little

extra hazard, we controlled that with lines while they rescued the individual who was trapped. >> reporter: he tells us the driver was conscious, did survive this. he was taken to the hospital. we do not know his condition. they are investigating whether he was under the influence. this happened at junipero serra and 19th. they did have the area, parts of complaining blocked off, they're working on getting everything reopened through here. ing traffic is moving through here okay. right now, the effort to get that car out is under way. firefighters are involved. the tow truck operator, this will be something to watch. stay with us as we follow this story. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you for the update. developing news on the

coronavirus. about 10,000 people have been sick. more than 200 people died. here's what we know this morning. it can spread human to human and people with no symptoms can still test positive. the coronavirus produces up to 30% of common colds. so the question remains what makes this new strain so deadly? this morning on "gma," dr. jennifer ashton explains what doctors are working on to figure out. >> there's much that we don't know at this time. these are important facts. number one, we still don't know how it's transmitted. we have some theories, it's not been confirmed. we don't know the incubation period. another report said around five days on average. we don't know how contagious or how severe this virus it. the fatality rate is 2%, 3%. we don't know that for sure and we don't yet know the source. >> you can hear more from dr. ashton coming up on "gma," 7:00 a.m. after abc7 mornings.

junipero serra. firefighters describe it as the system that controls the vapors when you fill your car. it withdraws the vapors being pumped out of the tank. there was a fire. then these vapors that created an extra hazard. firefighters were busy putting out the fire, monitoring the threat in the air and rescuing the driver. >> 33 firefighters respond to this incident. it was necessary to remove the roof of the car to extricate the individual. once the roof was removed, they were pinned in the car. it was quite difficult. we had good crews that did a good job getting him out. >> reporter: the man was conscious and taken to the hospital. they're looking into whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. no other cars were involved. they say they got the call this

morning about 3:30 to come to junipero serra. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. a senate vote to acquit president trump could happen as early as tonight. republican senator lamar alexander announced he will vote against hearing new witnesses. alexander is one of four key senators democrats had hoped to sway the vote. senator susan collins says she will vote to allow witnesses. senator mitt romney says he also wants to hear from them. senator lisa murkowski is still on the fence. hearing new witness testimony would extend the impeachment trial. this morning the u.s. state department is warning citizens not to travel to china after a record number of coronavirus deaths in 24 hours. >> the coronavirus death toll stands at 213, all in china. 9,700 cases are reported there. the world health organization declared a global public health emergency and the state department issued that do not travel warning and said u.s. citizens currently in china

should consider leaving. levis closed half of its stores in china, including in wuhan. that is the epicenter of the epidemic. starbucks closed about half of its china locations. in the u.s., there are six confirmed cases of coronavirus, including the first person to person infection. a man in illinois caught the virus from his wife. there are two cases in southern california, one in washington state, one case in arizona. abc7 news talked to one woman who just arrived from shanghai. she said china is doing what it can to take action against the coronavirus outbreak. >> the government did a lot to control the situation. i feel like it's under control. >> there are no cases in the bay area, but it's affecting people. san francisco is going ahead with the chinese new year parade but events in palo alto and oakland have been canceled as a precaution. the company that owns the helicopter owned in the crash that killed kobe bryant, his daughter and seven others is

suspending its helicopter operations. island express is not saying why. the "new york times" is reporting that the chopper wasn't even legal to fly in poor visibility. weather is just one of the factors that the ntsb is focusing on in their investigation. the lakers are planning a tribute to the victims when the team returns to the court tonight. this will be the first time since the crash. the city of los angeles is planning a memorial but no date or location has been set. just two more days until super bowl liv and today the 49ers will hold a practice before taking on the chiefs. >> this is a live look at hard rock stadium. yesterday the niners practiced in helmets and shells at the university of miami. head coach kyle shanahan did not have the players wear pads to make sure they get into the game healthy. the session lasted an hour and 42 minutes. tomorrow the 49ers will hold a walk-through at hard rock stadium. >> niners fans are flying to see

safety program. she ordered the utility to file more detailed records and test the program with state officials. pg&e may have to restore everyone's power no more than a day after severe weather conditions subside. pg&e would need to improve access to online information and provide better reasoning for when it cuts the power. a new government report says southwest airlines flew more than 17 million passengers on planes with unconfirmed maintenance records over a two-year span. the report, soon to be released in the coming days, says that southwest airlines failed to prioritize safety and accuses the faa about not doing enough regarding it. the document says in 2019 pilots repeatedly tried to land amid gale force winds and smashed both wing tips of a jet on a runway. we know it can be difficult to keep track of different chargers for different devices. that's why lawmakers in the eu passed a resolution calling for tech companies to make one charger for all smart devices.
