>> the patient is an adult male who recently traveled to wuhan, china, the epicenter of the outbreak. >> he arrived a week ago and has kept himself isolated at home as a precaution. >> david louie is live with a look at the health risk that this patient presents to the general public. david. >> reporter: well, dan and ama, now that we have a confirmed case here in the bay area, it naturally raises worries about exposure and whether or not there is risk. in this case health officials in santa clara county say the patient did the right thing, he stayed at home until he went to a health clinic to get checked. the county's top health official said the santa clara county resident developed symptoms after returning a week ago from china. he stayed home, which reduced exposure to others. >> we are making sure that anyone that he did come into contact with is being monitoed for symptoms and staying at home away from others. >> reporter: the patient had been in wuhan, the center of the

coronavirus outbreak in central china. he also visited shanghai before flying to san jose internatio l international. >> our assessment is that the public at large is at low risk because this case was careful to self-isolate at home for the entire time since he returned >>om china. chances of infected patients entering the u.s. and other countries. nearly 30 carriers are suspending flights to and from china, including american, united, delta. >> companies, for example, like apple and others that manufacture goods in china for shipment worldwide are watching this closely. it could have a big impact on their businesses. >> reporter: at sfo ticket agents were wearing face masks. sue oliver was there to see her son off to china where he will be teaching math. she said she's nervous. >> he's got 50 masks he's taking

with him and he's going to wear those. he's young and healthy and thinks he'll be okay. >> reporter: county health officials won't share the patient's name, age or city of residence. they say the number of people that may have been exposed is a short list. the affected patient is said to be in stable condition. now, this becomes now the third coronavirus confirmed case in california. nationwide there are seven cases in four states. live in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. [ bell ringing ] traders are worried about the impact of china's fast-spreading coronavirus. the dow dropped3 poin60ts. the index closed at 28,256. the nasdaq lost 148 points and the s&p 500 dropped 58. tonight china reports that its coronavirus death toll has risen to 259. there are nearly 12,000 confirmed cases. today the trump administration

temporarily suspended entry into the united states for any foreign national who may have traveled to china. only immediate family of u.s. citizens and permanent residents will be allowed to enter. starting sunday any u.s. citizen returning home who has been in the hubay province will be quarantined up to 14 days. all flights to china will be funneled to seven airports, including sfo and l.a.x. some in the bay area's chinese-american community say the temporary ban is too extreme. we spoke to the co-director of chinese for affirmative action and says the ban promotes stigma and discrimination. >> it is creating what many chinese americans and asian americans feel, which is it's promoting an anti-chinese sentiment. >> the virus will not stop the local community from celebrating

the lunar new year and next week's parade. as news broke this afternoon, we have the abc 7 news app to sending out breaking alerts. the first went out half an hour before health officials spoke publicly. let's move on, one of oakland's biggest businesses is taking steps tonight to build a better bay area in its own backyard, on front yard, depending on how you look at it. a homeless camp has taken over one side of mosswood park which sits right across broadway from kaiser's oakland medical center. eric thomas explains how kaiser is teaming up with local assistance groups to help dozens of residents find a new and better place to live. >> reporter: christine eberhard came to the bay area from germany twe20 years ago to be w the love of her life. she never expected to be homeless. >> no human being should be in

that position ever. >> reporter: she worked in the printing business but five and a half years ago a fall left her with brokenon b aescuts. unable to work, she was evicted. >> and so i lived for five and a half years at mosswood park. >> reporter: lulu pitched a tent under that tree. but then officials told her that they didn't want homeless people that close to this playground and those kids so she joined a group of tents, about 50 people, 100 yards away. last november kaiser, along with a group called operation dignity selected those 50 people for a pilot project. >> we've been working through kaiser and the city of oakland to actually help them get into some kind of a transitional situation. >> reporter: and eventually into more permanent housing. kaiser is spending up to a million dollars to fund the program, operation dig ninity i doing the leg work. 30 are living in motels or transitional housing, including lulu.

after five and a half years living outside, getting used to living indoors can be a challenge. >> suddenly i've got a roof and i'm waking up and where are the stars. >> reporter: but she's looking forward to getting her own place and cooking meals in her very own kitchen. eric thomas, abc 7 news. in the north bay, it is moving day for the massive homeless camp that has taken over joe rodota trail. police made no arrests. some are relocating to a county sanctioned camp in oakmont. others are heading to the sam jones shelter. that's a 200-bed facility run by catholic charities. the trail is now fenced off and a contractor will come out tomorrow to remove all of the debris left behind. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. all right, we are starting super bowl weekend.

the 49ers play the kansas city chiefs on sunday, of course, in miami. >> abc 7's sports director larry beil is live in miami beach tonight with more. larry? >> reporter: dan, ama, we are live at the super bowl experience at the miami convention center. above me is the lombardi trophy. the 49ers have won that trophy five times. the last time they won it was right here in miami. you've got 20 seconds, by the way, to pose for a photo up there. the chiefs have won the trophy only once, that was 50 years ago. back then they didn't even call it the lombardi trophy or the super bowl, it was the afl/nfl championship game. so clearly things have changed a lot over 50 years. one man who could be instrumental in the 49ers winning another lombardi trophy is rookie nick bosa. if he and dee ford can get pressure on patrick mahomes, the chiefs could be in trouble. bosa is up for the defensive rookie of the year award. his teammates say he's definitely deserving.

today was getaway day for 49ers fans heading to watch their team in miami. abc 7 news was at san francisco international airport where there was a sea of red and gold in the domestic terminals. ray pena said he turned a life-changing moment into an opportunity to cheer on his beloved niners. >> i got a prosthetic eye, lost my eye to cancer a couple years back. so there was no other option but to take it out. but i got a 49er eye and now we're ready to go to miami. >> wow. he called the trip a once in a lifetime experience that he just had to be a part of. >> good for him. he'll have a great time. let's take you back now live to miami. >> that's where we findi larry eil. out with championship trophies, as i often do. this is the nfc championship trophy, the halas trophy, which the niners have because they won the nfc title.

area where a memorial has been growing. >> if you're out there now and playing that game tonight, i say to you guys, give it your all, play it as hard as you can because that's what he would do. >> kobe bryant, his 13-year-old daughter gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter accident sunday. the president of staples center said the memorial will be packed up sunday, the articles will be cataloged and sent to kobe bryant's family. new at 6:00, one california lawmaker is moving forward with his plans to turn pg&e into a public utility. he will introduce new legislation on monday with that aim in mind. details of the plan will be laid out month with a bill itself being introduced early next week. pg&e has repeatedly pushed back against efforts to turn it into a public utility. president trump's impeachment trial has entered its final phase. senate leaders will now determine when to hold the vote of acquittal. abc news reporter mona wraps it

office with bolton, mick mulvaney and rudy giuliani when trump directed bolton to press ukraine's new president to meet with guiliani, who was trying to gather damaging information on democrats. the president flatly denies the allegation. but despite the new revelations and repeated pleas from house managers for witnesses, a majority of republican senators decided they have heard enough. gop senator lisa murkowski, who was a potential swing vote, writing in a statement, quote, i have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the senate. i don't believe the continuation of this process will change anything. now senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and senate minority leader chuck schumer have begun discussing next steps, which includes the final vote to acquit president trump. senator schumer says he and mcconnell are on the same page about one thing. they do not want to hold the final impeachment vote in the dark of the night, meaning the senate will likely wait until early next week to decide if president trump will remain in office.

welcome, everybody. we are live at the super bowl experience at the convention center in miami. we've got a lot of chiefs fans making noise back here. anyway, 49ers/chiefs on sunday. 25 years ago in miami, bryant young helped lead the 49ers to a super bowl title and this sunday, well tomorrow actually, he could be getting a call from the pro football hall of fame. the faithful remember bryant young. he was a rugged defensive lineman, played 14 years for the niners, 1994 to 2007. started 208 games that he played for the niners, four trips to the pro bowl. i asked young if he's nervous awaiting that call from the hall. >> you know what, there are a little bit of nerves, but i'm

outbreak. there are 49ers super fans and then the ultimate fans. tonight we'll introduce you to kit ann trout who's in the hall of fame. finally tonight, some thoughts about what really matters. something special is happening in the bay area this week and happening in kansas city too. two communities united in their division over a single game, each rooting for the home team. football fans around the country will tune into the super bowl on sunday. most will pick a team. but relatively few will be as invested as we are here or the good folks in kansas city are there. it is and should be a fun and friendly rivalry that each side can hope will produce a championship at best and a good game at worst. super bowl sunday has become something of a national holiday, a day when friends and family gather to share the game and a ton of food, second only apparently to thanksgiving. yes, it's just a football game at the end of the day, but in a
