now, news to build a better bay area. from abc 7. >> we've been preparing for this possibility for weeks, knowing that we were likely to eventually confirm a case. >> it is official. santa clara county confirms the bay area's first case of coronavirus. it comes on the same day the u.s. took unprecedented steps to contain the virus, declaring a public health emergency. temporarily barring any foreigner who has recently traveled to china from entering the u.s. and ordering all americans returning from wuhan, china, to be quarantined. the news rocking wall street. the dow plunging more than 600 points. more than 250 people have died worldwide with more than 12,000 infections confirmed around the

world. the latest rig here in the bay area. >> so here's what we know about the man with coronavirus. health officials say he had visited wuhan and shanghai and returned a week ago. he flew into san jose airport and developed symptoms after returning. >> he's been self-isolating at home and did not leave home at all except to seek medical care. >> county health feeteams are monitoring a short list of people who may have been exposed. health officials say the risk to the public is low. they did not disclose the man's name, age, or his city of residence. good evening, thank you for joining us. >> starting sunday, all incoming flights from chinare be funneled through seven airports. >> they are sfo, lax, jfk, seattle, atlanta, and o'harrah in chicago.

>> reporter: dan and ama, travelers i spoke to who arrived from china are relieved they were able to get in tonight. despite this threat of the growing virus, some are upset that there aren't even travel restrictions happening at all. >> reporter: she arrived from china just in time before the u.s. implements travel restrictions to international travelers from china. >> i was lucky. i'm lucky i got here. >> foreign nationals, other than immediate family of u.s. citizens and permanent residents, who have travelled in china within the last 14 days will be denied entry into the united states. >> reporter: and in an unprecedented move, 200 americans are required to remain at a military base in riverside county for a two-week quarantine. they evacuated from wuhan, china. >> i think it's a good thing. you never know. if people go off and travel

somewhere and they come back, and it's disease. >> reporter: it's the first quarantine the cdc has issued in more than 50 years. but some here in the bay area feel these travel restrictions on foreign nationals that come from china are too extreme. >> unfortunately, xena suggesting that chinese people are hosts of this deadly virus. there's no reason to spread panic and alarm at this stage. >> reporter: the new travel restrictions are set to begin this sunday at 8:00 p.m. lauren martinez, "abc7 news." stanford university is restricting all travel to china to prevent the spread of coronavirus. organizers of events in at least four california cities

have canceled upcoming lunar new year events due to coronavirus. we have more coverage of the coronavirus at abc7news.com, including the symptoms, how it spreads, and how you can avoid it. breaking news, a person has been shot outside a high school in antioch where there was a varsity basketball game tonight. there was a disturbance that led to the shooting. the person shot was a juvenile. police haven't released their condition or said if they're looking for suspects. the basketball game tonight was against antioch high school. a police chase ended in union city with officers opening fair. they were going after suspects that had robbed a store. you can see the large response from police. two people were t scene ambulance. a third was arrested. the car that was being chased ended up on the front yard of a

home. a police car blocked it in. that shooting happened at the end of balmorial street.street. in the east bay, a car drove off the road and killed a woman on the sidewalk around 2:00 this afternoon in alameda. the driver was arrested for an unrelated warrant. police are investigating whether alcohol or drugs were involved. to the south bay, fire crews have given the all clear at valley medical center. crews inspected the facility after people reported a funny smell, possibly gas. there was no gas leak, but it's unclear what caused the smell. the los angeles lakers took to the court this evening for the first time since the death of kobe bryant. fans received number 8 and number 24 shirts, the numbers bryant wore in seans withhe team. before the game, there was a deeply moving and emotional tribute to the nba great.
