frustrations, the candidates took victory laps before heading to new hampshire. abc's ines de la cuetara begins our coverage from des moines. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth and elizabeth. we still don't know who won the iowa caucuses. the campaigns and their supporters have been waiting for hours and the iowa democratic party is struggling to explain the delay. overnight, frustration from campaigns and their supporters. >> thank you so much. so, listen, it is too close to call. so i'm just going to tell you what i do know -- >> you won! [ cheers ] >> reporter: the iowa democratic party not releasing any results saying in a statement they're worried about quality checks and inconsistencies. >> i want to make sure they're very careful in their deliberations, and indications are it's going to be close. >> reporter: the holdup raising questions about the new app used

this cycle to report results, but the party insisting the problem is not the results of any hack or intrusion. >> we know one thing, we are punching above our weight. >> reporter: abc news learning officials are now hand counting the results, but the complication is adding a new layer of doubt to an already uncertain primary season. there was no clear front-runner in iowa. joe biden, bernie sanders, elizabeth warren and pete buttigieg had all been hoping winning the hawkeye state would help them break out of the pack. >> i have a good feeling we're going to be doing very, very well in iowa. [ cheers ] >> reporter: the biden campaign indicating they may not trust the party writing in a statement, we believe that the campaigns deserve full explanations and relevant information regarding the methods of quality control you are employing and an opportunity to respond before any official results are released and the campaigns are now moving on to new hampshire which votes in a week. the iowa democratic party says it will release the results

today. kenneth and elizabeth. >> and we will be watching. all right, ines there in des moines, thank you. the candidates are now forced to move on from iowa under a cloud of confusion and doubt. >> that means the winner has been denied the opportunity to relish the opportunity on the big night. more insight from our political director rick klein. >> kenneth and elizabeth, an utter meltdown in des moines. what was supposed to be a joyous kickoff to the process is instead a meltdown of epic proportions for a party that right now is grappling with a whole series of issues, now no clarity at all out of iowa. no information coming from the iowa democratic party after a series of technical snafus delayed calling into question the results. now even joe biden's campaign saying they're not sure they can trust the numbers. multiple campaigns are now declaring victory over partial sets of numbers, and all of the campaigns are decamping to new hampshire for the next round without knowing really anything of what happened in the first state. the country that's been reeling

with questions around election security now has a new one to grapple with with president trump stirring the pot of this turmoil inside the democratic party, really a worst case scenario for the democrats here in iowa. kenneth and elizabeth. >> rick, thank you. we will have much more analysis of the chaos in iowa and where the race goes from here on our website and our streaming channel abc newslive. we turn now to the coronavirus emergency. at least 425 people have now died in china. >> 64 deaths have been confirmed in the last day and now new flights are set to evacuate more americans from the country. this morning, a husband and wife infected with the coronavirus are being treated at a new hospital. california officials say they've been moved to san francisco. their hometown doctors unable to handle their deteriorating condition. >> they did not go out even for groceries. they have not been out of their house. so as far as i'm concerned, there is at the present time absolutely no risk. >> reporter: it's the second

person-to-person transmission case in the u.s. just 2 of the 11 confirmed cases here. while the cdc is confident the spread of the virus can be contained, international health officials are now warning that the virus can survive on hard surfaces for up to five days. >> expect to find additional cases of novel coronavirus infection in the united states. >> reporter: overnight chinese state media released this video of soldiers delivering hundreds of beds to a makeshift quarantine facility in the convention center in wuhan, the city at the center of the outbreak. to the south in hong kong officials overnight confirmed the second death outside mainland china. a 39-year-old man who began feeling sick last wednesday. it comes as nearly 4,000 people on board a princess cruise ship remain on lockdown including americans. >> the ship got the news that a passenger, a previous passenger, had tested positive, and that put everything into a spin. >> reporter: that passenger diagnosed after leaving the

cruise early. it's docked in japan while teams covered head to toe in hazmat suits go from room to room testing others for symptoms. the thousands on board now in limbo waiting to hear if they'll be forced to stay in quarantine. >> it's unfathomable that 4,000 people will be in this harbor for 14 days or more. >> more than 20,000 cases are now reported worldwide but some good news this morning. the first coronavirus patient here in the u.s. is now out of the hospital. he's still in isolation in washington state but his condition has improved enough to go home. new details overnight about a hit-and-run crash outside a high school near oklahoma city. a star athlete was killed and five other students were injured, some critically. the truck driver is now in custody. police are investigating whether he was intoxicated. they also tell us that he lost his son in a car crash in that same area on sunday. classes are canceled until thursday at texas a&m commerce after a shooting inside a

student dorm. two women were killed and a 2-year-old child was injured. no word why that toddler was on campus. no arrests were reported overnight. police are not revealing a potential motive and the school says it is increasing patrols on campus. time now for a look at your weather for this tuesday morning. salt lake city is finally getting a break from the snow after a storm dumped up to 18 inches in parts of the region. roads are still expected to be icy this morning. looking at the radar, denver is now feeling the brunt of that storm. even albuquerque is getting snow overnight and snow is expected to begin in chicago just in time for the morning commute. looking at today's high temperatures, only 19 in denver, even phoenix is chilly with a high of 55. 64 in los angeles and 75 in new orleans.

i have to tell you something today that i wish i didn't have to tell you. i have been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. >> talk show host rush limbaugh has revealed he's fighting advanced lung cancer. he's taking the next few days off to get more tests and determine treatment.

he says his only symptom so far is shortness of breath. now to washington and closing arguments in the impeachment trial. >> a closely watched republican senator has now revealed how she will vote. it comes as president trump prepares for tonight's state of the union address with many wondering how he will address the impeachment trial. >> abc's andrew dymburt has the latest from capitol hill. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, guys. the democrats just don't have the votes to convict the president, but interestingly enough, there's a growing number of republican senators who say the president's actions were wrong but still don't rise to the level of impeachment. it's a fight to the finish but heading towards a democrat defeat. in the senate impeachment trial of president trump, both sides delivering closing arguments monday ahead of an expected acquittal. no gop senator indicating they would vote for trump's removal from office including moderate republicans like alaska's lisa murkowski. >> i cannot vote to convict. the constitution provides for impeachment but does not demand

it in all instances. >> reporter: with the result all but sealed democrats instead urging their republican counterparts to view the trial through the lens of history. lead house impeachment manager adam schiff. >> you can't trust this president to do the right thing, not for one minute, not for one election, not for the sake of our country. >> reporter: trump's defense meanwhile arguing the impeachment process was partisan and claimed the close call to introduce new witnesses and documents in the trial would not have changed a thing. >> these articles fail on their face as they do not meet the constitutional stanford for impeachable offenses. no amount of testimony could change that fact. >> reporter: still while republicans get set to acquit the president, a growing number disagree with his actions insisting the president's efforts to pressure ukraine to investigate joe biden was not right. >> i think he shouldn't have done it. i think it was wrong. >> reporter: closing arguments

this morning a mystery surrounds the deaths of two men who dedicated their lives to one of nature's biggest phenomena. the two activists worked at the world famous el rosario reserve in mexico where each winter millions of monarch butterflies migrate to the mountains west of mexico city, sometimes traveling thousands of miles. >> they come here from as far away as winnipeg, canada. they weigh less than an ounce. >> reporter: abc news was given extraordinary access to the reserve in 2018 when "nightline" reported on the massive decline in the number of migrating butterflies. down 95% since the990s. experts blamed climate change, an uptick in hurricanes and also illegal logging, which conservationists have been fighting to stop. [ speaking foreign language ] the first victim, homero gomez, the manager of the sanctuary was found dead after police say he was beaten and thrown down a well. his family says he had recently received threats warning him to stop the campaign against

illegal logging. the second victim, a tour guide at the reserve, was found dead days later at the very top of the sanctuary. no arrests have been reported and authorities have not confirmed whether the deaths are connected. police in california are trying to determine a motive for a shooting rampage on a greyhound bus in the middle of the night. a woman was killed and five other people were wounded when a man opened fire on the bus as it was heading from los angeles to san francisco. passengers disarmed him and got him off the bus. detectives say there's no indication that the suspect knew the victims. a kayaking trip in the florida evergrades has ended with a man being rescued. his trip was supposed to last one week, but he was stranded for an extra four days. his cell phone and other belongings finally washed up on shore on sunday, but tracking data from his phone helped deputies find him yesterday. he was floating face up wearing a life jacket. he's now recovering.

in sports super bowl mvp patrick mahomes has realized a dream come true. he and his girlfriend made the trip to disney world and then mahomes spoke one-on-one with abc's will reeve. >> you tweeted years ago like i can't imagine what it would be like to come to disney world as the quarterback winning the super bowl. now you're here. how does it compare? >> i couldn't even imagine how it feels to be here. i mean, i thought i could when i sent the tweet out but to be here with all chiefs kingdom behind me and be a super bowl champion is amazing. i think after i get that parade in kansas city and i get to be with the fans and see the joy they have, i think that'll be one of the major moments when it sets in for me. >> the chiefs victory parade is tomorrow in kansas city. >> kansas city coach andy reid was asked how he celebrated the win, and he said that he ate, quote, the biggest cheeseburger ever saw, and then he said this. >> i didn't really sleep last night, but i didn't spend it with the trophy. well, i did.
