>> reporter: good morning, george. what a mess. this is not the finish that anyone expected here in iowa. the state democratic party now having to go through all the paper documentation and manually verify the results. overnight, iowa caucus chaos after hours of delays, still no official results and no winner in the democratic race with the party blaming inconsistencies in reporting. but that didn't stop some candidates from claiming they came out on top. >> iowa, you have shocked the nation. >> reporter: mayor pete buttigieg's campaign releasing their own unverified numbers saying their candidate outperformed expectations and the competition. >> we are going on to new hampshire victorious. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders' campaign releasing their own figures in response showing sanders with a commanding lead. >> when those results are

announced, i have a good feeling we're going to be doing very, very well here in iowa. >> reporter: senators elizabeth warren and amy klobuchar both claiming big finishes too. >> it is too close to call so i'm just going to tell you what i do know. >> you won! >> we are punching above our weight. >> reporter: the candidates now jetting off to new hampshire, the site of the next contest with the iowa results still in limbo. organizers in the state cite a domino effect of problems for the delay. several issues with the new app where results were to be inputted. log-in trouble, reporting confusion. the state department saying they need to do quality check, but results should be delivered later today. >> we are validating every piece of data we have against our paper trail. that system is taking longer than expected, but it's in place to ensure we are eventually able to report results with full confidence.

>> reporter: the general counsel for biden's campaign sending a letter to election officials demanding full explanations and relevant information regarding the methods of quality control you are employing and an opportunity to respond before any official results are released. >> well, the iowa democratic party is working to get this result, get them straight and i want to make sure they're very careful in their deliberations. the results end up being, this is a real momentum buzzkill for whoever actually ends up on top, george. >> you put that pretty well, eva. no iowa bounce this year. at least it doesn't look like it. thanks very much. michael? >> even though there's chaos the candidates aren't missing a beat heading directly to new hampshire this morning where the first primary is taking place one week from today. whit johnson is there in manchester tracking the latest. good morning to you, whit.

>> reporter: michael, good morning to you. despite the debacle that unfolded in iowa, there's now a new sense of urgency as the candidates touch down here in new hampshire and they are hitting the ground running. we have video from overnight. those campaign planes landing in manchester. senator amy klobuchar among the first to arrive greeted by a group of supporters telling the crowd they had a good night in iowa, and won delegates in places they never expected to win. new hampshire's primary one week from today with 42% of the electorate made up of independent voters, candidates trying to lock down any of those still undecideds including mayor pete buttigieg who is claiming some victory from last night in iowa. he is about to speak to reporters here in new hampshire and supporters as well. he has a busy day of events. he's raised the most money in the granite state, $400,000 in 2019, but bernie sanders keeping up with his national trend still has the largest number of individual donors here. senators sanders, klobuchar and warren making their case to voters in new hampshire later today, but all then have to rush back to washington, d.c. by

tomorrow morning to make sure they're in place for that vote on president trump's impeachment. robin? >> busy times. all right, whit, thank you. president trump is reacting to the iowa results this morning as he prepares to deliver his state of the union address tonight on the evening before he's expected to be acquitted on the senate impeachment trial. our chief white house correspondent jon karl has the latest on all of this. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the trump camp is positively gleeful about the problems democrats are having with the caucus results. just take a look at this tweet from the trump campaign, using a clip from "spongebob squarepants." the tag line live look at the democratic party doing quality control. the president himself tweeted about the mess in iowa this morning saying, quote, the democratic caucus is an unmitigated disaster. nothing works.

just like they ran the country. this isn't the only problem. turnout, only about the same number of democrats turned out this time as did in 2016. far short of the results of the turn in 2008 when barack obama had his big victory. >> a lot of issues there in iowa. jon, let me ask you, what can we expect to hear from the president tonight in the state of the union address? >> reporter: i'm told the president has been working through his speech on teleprompter with his aides. white house officials say it will be a positive and forward looking message, the opening chapter of his campaign, touting the success of the economy. unclear at this point if he'll even mention the impeachment. we'll have to wait until game time to see. >> thank you, jon. george? let's talk to two top democrats, former mayor of chicago rahm emanuel and yvette simpson, ceo of democracy for america. you come from different wings of the democratic party. let's see if you agree.

i wonder if you agree on one big thing, always been questions about the iowa caucus, unrepresented, 92% white. is it dead now? >> i think we have to have a conversation about iowa being dead. first of all, the state does not reflect the diversity of our party. we have to make sure it's not first. second, this caucus thing is unwieldy and i don't know about you i'm worried about nevada. they have a similar process. are they going to be ready? >> iowa has always been known as the iowa bounce for some candida candidates. barack obama, bill clinton. now it will be known as the iowa blunder. everybody will go back and reconsider the whole state, and the fact that one state in the whole system and structure about a caucus like that, and so it may go -- be part like four states is based on some indication, bernie sanders did well. but all the changes were demanded by bernie sanders so he in 2016 after the process he said i want the whole process changed in iowa. he got the change. >> he wanted a more transparent process and came up with three numbers and this app and created all kinds of confusion. >> it's not his fault but the irony is he would have been the

beneficiary of that bounce. and the other thing, george, usually you have 36 hours of a bounce. because of the state of the union, and the acquittal, this is 36 seconds. you won't get anything out of this and iowa in every way it's blundered, shortchanged. new hampshire and the next two meaning south carolina and nevada will set the tone. >> our debate coming up friday night in new hampshire as well. so, yvette, coming into this iowa caucus, joe biden was the national front-runner. bernie sanders right behind him but this appears to be more of a muddle. what does that mean? >> well, i think progressives had a great day. it sounds like if sanders was at the top, and elizabeth warren had the day she did, it's a good thing, and we've been talking about electability. it's not good for biden to say he's electable if he comes out fourth or third in this and worried about him in new hampshire as well. will he make it to south carolina if he has two terrible -- >> where he has been leading. >> if he makes two horrible first starts, will the money still be there? will people be behind him? >> sanders, it looks like, again, we got a little information. it's more ether.

there is a tie for second and the real winners in this process -- >> pete buttigieg and amy klobuchar. . >> pete and amy probably, and elizabeth warren. she touched bottom and bounced back in her organization, proved valuable. mayor pete coming out of south bend and amy who basically people was at 2% just three months ago in the rearview mirror is a contender. >> usually you say there's three tickets out of iowa. now i say five or six. >> the other person if it's true again is mayor bloomberg has an argument to make on super tuesday. >> i still think it's a tough road for bloomberg. you're getting in the race late. i don't know if he had the momentum. >> i think you would agree with this. if you're going shopping and you got a billion bucks, it's something to say. >> it's the democratic party. you can't buy an election. it should be about the people and about how you're galvanizing the base. >> it's about both. >> this debate could keep on going. we'll move on. friday as i said, we're hosting the final democratic debate

along with manchester's wmur at 8:00 eastern. the coronavirus emergency as cases now top 20,000. the government is sending new flights to china to evacuate americans and gio benitez is at bellevue hospital here in manhattan with more. good morning, gio. >> reporter: michael, good morning to you. the cdc is investigating more than 80 possible cases in america right now. one of those patients is right here at this hospital in new york city. a 40-year-old woman and now this morning the chinese government is reporting 425 deaths in china alone. this morning, hong kong's first death from the coronavirus now sparking protests as the u.s. prepares to evacuate more americans out of wuhan, china. multiple flights out of china will be sent to one of four american military bases where passengers will be quarantined. wisconsin native sam roth has been working with u.s. officials to get his wife and two daughters out of wuhan where they were visiting family. >> trying to get medical attention in wuhan is very challenging at the moment. since the hospitals are

overwhelmed. >> reporter: time lapse video on chinese state television showing two hospitals built in just the last ten days. one is now already taking patients. this as a princess cruise ship is quarantined off the coast of japan after a passenger who already left the ship was confirmed to have the novel coronavirus. american author gay coulter is on the docked ship. >> we've been in many lines and group situations and theater situations. so it's not unlikely some of us have been infected. >> reporter: here in america at least 11 confirmed cases, most traveled to wuhan and two lived with an infected person. some officials like administrators at princeton university aren't taking chances now having some students who recently traveled to china self-quarantined. health officials are working on a vaccine, but that is still months away. our dr. jennifer ashton visiting the national institutes of health. >> what do you think the chances

are that this novel coronavirus outbreak could become a pandemic? >> part of the concern in the global health sphere is what happens when you get those cases in countries that don't have a health care system? will you see the kind of unfeathered spread from one person to another? >> reporter: and now this morning the first american diagnosed with the virus in washington state is out of the hospital. it took him 13 days to be well enough to go home. and the cdc says we will likely see more confirmed cases in america in the coming days. but that officials are taking unprecedented steps to prevent that. robin? >> all right. gio, thank you. now to the health news from rush limbaugh. the radio host revealing he's been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. steve osunsami is in atlanta with more on this. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. rush limbaugh says he plans to be off the air this week until at least thursday while he meets th his doctors to try and figure out how to beat this.

burden. she only shared it with her immediate family and one cast member who she says all helped her through this terrible time. ♪ >> reporter: for three decades shannen doherty has been a television fixture rocketing to fame as brenda on "90210". >> i thought i felt something. >> where? >> here. >> reporter: and on "charmed." >> we're desperate and it's working. >> reporter: then in 2015 a shocking breast cancer diagnosis. and years later remission. now nearly five years after that initial diagnosis, doherty is revealing a new struggle she's kept out of the public eye. tell me why you're sitting here today. >> it's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that i have stage 4. so my cancer came back and that's why i'm here. >> you've been living with it privately for a year now, correct? >> yes. >> you wanted to keep it private. >> i still do. i mean i don't think that i've processed it. it's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways. >> it's not fair.

why me? >> there are days when i say why me then i go why not me? who else? who else besides me deserves this? none of us do. i would say my first reaction is always concern about how am i going to tell my mom, my husband? >> you're worried about everyone else around you. >> i think so. >> reporter: doherty went back to work on the set of the "90210" reboot which launched soon after luke perry's tragic passing. all the while keeping her secret to herself. what was going through your mind at that moment because you didn't share this with anyone? >> why wasn't it me? so weird. for me to be diagnosed and then somebody who was, you know, seemingly healthy to go first. it was really like shocking and the least i could do to honor him was do that show. >> to luke.

>> to luke. >> i still haven't done enough in my opinion. so it's a hard one because i thought, well, this will -- when i finally do come out i would have worked 16 hours a day and it will be a good -- people can look at that and say, oh, my god, she can work and other people with stage 4 can work. our life doesn't end the minute we get the diagnosis. we still have living to do. >> it's actually kind of nice to be back. >> how did you make it through shooting keeping that dark secret? >> brian austin green. >> wherever you are in life is exactly where you're meant to be. >> i had moments of great anxiety where i thought i can't do this and brian was the one person who of that group of people that knew, that i told like pretty quickly and said, here, this is what i'm dealing with. so prior to shooting he would always call me and say, listen, whatever happens, like i have your back and we were able to talk about luke in a way that

was very positive and uplifting and sort of remember a lot of great moments. >> reporter: amid her battle with cancer doherty is in the middle of a fight with her insurance company state farm. after her california home was damaged in the woolsey fire in 2018. >> my house was severely damaged. you walk into the house and it just wreaked of smoke. and, you know, i tried. i communicated with my insurance company. i called. i got passed around from claims adjuster to claims adjuster. so i ended up suing state farm and the result has been one of the most horrific processes i have ever been through. >> doherty claims she has been forced to pay out of pocket for losses she believed should be covered by her insurance policy and that some of her claims have been unjustly denied. state farm telling abc news, we empathize with ms. doherty's health issues and wish her a full recovery. adding we strongly believe we've upheld our commitment to our customer and paid what we owed

on this claim. according to court documents, state farm says they have paid nearly $1.1 million to clean and repair plaintiff's home and personal property and for temporarily housing and furniture rental. adding that the plaintiff nevertheless alleges she is entitled to additional benefits under her homeowner's policy. doherty says she's only speaking out about her cancer diagnosis because court documents detailing her health conditions will be made public ahead of the trial. you want to own your cancer story. >> yeah. i mean i'd rather people hear it from me. i don't want it to be twisted. i don't want it to be a court document. i want it to be real and authentic and i want to control the narrative. i want people to know from me. >> how do you handle the fear? >> i don't know. i mean i'm petrified. i'm pretty scared. my mom is, you know, a ridiculously strong, courageous human being. so is my husband but i worry about him.

>> lawsuit aside, have you decided how you want to live? are you going to change how you live? >> i think the thing i want to do the most right now is i want to make an impact and i can make that impact through the lawsuit and by saying enough is enough with big business and corporations running the little person over. it's not fair. and i'm taking a stand for all of us but it's more about how i want to be remembered for something bigger than just me. >> state farm says they are prepared to defend their position in court while doherty's attorney tells us the situation has cost their client dearly in time, energy and emotional well-being, all while suffering a terminal illness. but i wanted to share something shannen said is helping her get through a quote she loves. we have heard yolo. you only live once. she says you only die once. you live every day.

announce those results at some point today. robin? >> at some point, all right there, eva, thank you. you can see live coverage of the results all day on the new abc newslive streaming everywhere. michael? >> all right, robin. we're going to turn now to our "gma" health alert. in a new study out this morning that says eating meat may increase your risk of heart disease, and consuming red and processed meats in particular could raise the risk of early death. dr. ashton is here with this study. and, doc, what did this study find? >> i know you love your steak. this appeared in jama done at cornell and gave people food questionnaires, and they basically found people that eat more than two servings a week of processed meat, unprocessed meat, even poultry, had a significant but small increased risk of heart disease, cardiovascular disease. if they just looked at meat that risk went up a little bit. so death from all causes. so basically even though this was done by association, not cause and effect it suggests
