coming up. first we want to get to the weather. that major storm on the move. alerts spreading across 24 states this morning as that dangerous system brings tornadoes, heavy snow and flash flooding. ginger starts us off with the very latest. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, michael. this is an alarming image to wake up to if you're in atlanta or dothan, alabama. montgomery too. that's a tornado watch until noon. those storms firing into the low pressure system. severe thunder warning northwest of atlanta. this thing already brought 13 reported tornadoes. >> oh, god. get in the elevator. >> reporter: that is the moment severe storms blew through new orleans. >> you can't see that building. >> reporter: one of more than 60 reports of severe thunderstorms from louisiana to tennessee. trees littering the road in martinville, mississippi. >> golly. that's got to be a tornado. >> reporter: winds close to 60 miles per hour in nola dropping large hail, crushing cars. in pickens, mississippi, several homes shattered by a tornado. their neighbors hit with a twister too. in missouri up to six inches of snow. i-70 shut down near the missouri

river bridge, a pileup leaving a logjam of tractor trailers. across oklahoma, vehicle after vehicle ending up on the sides of the roads. this tanker sliding into a creek east of chickasha. the driver hospitalized but expected to recover. in texas, snowplows out in full force in wichita falls. the snow and cold diving as far south as el paso. we know this storm has the capability of creating tornadoes. who has to watch for that today? straight into the region, right along that florida/georgia state line, that's who could potentially see the highest risk of a tornado today but you could also see a damaging wind anywhere from orlando, so central florida right up the east coast. the i-95 corridor gets through it today into the early evening hours. if you're in charleston or raleigh, you're not out of the woods and have that line coming at you. 60 mile-per-hour winds that can take down power lines and certainly trees. cecilia? >> it'll be rough out there.

thank you. we turn to that historic victory for president trump in the impeachment trial. the senate acquitting him on both charges. this was a straight party line vote except for senator mitt romney who did something no politician has ever done before, voting to remove his own party's president from office. our senior national correspondent terry moran is there at the white house with the very latest. terry, president trump expected to take a victory lap just a few hours from now. >> reporter: he will. good morning, cecelia. the president holding a press conference at noon today. there was drama. mitt romney, in what he called a crime of conscious, enraged the white house. after months of fighting, the verdict is in. >> donald john trump, president of the united states, is not guilty as charged. the senate sitting as a court of impeachment stands adjourned.

>> reporter: president trump and his team victorious. >> the president won. the office of the president won. the constitution won. >> reporter: but the vote from republican senators was not unanimous. >> mr. romney. >> guilty. >> reporter: mitt romney becoming the first senator in history to vote to remove a president from his own party in a dramatic speech saying it was his oath before god that guided his decision. >> my faith is at the heart of who i am. i take an oath before god as enormously consequential. >> reporter: romney said the evidence is clear, president trump pressured ukraine to investigate joe and hunter biden for his own political gain. >> there's no question in my mind that were their names not biden, the president would never have done what he did. the president is guilty of an

appalling abuse of public trust. >> reporter: the president and the senator from utah have a tumultuous past and romney predicted his decision would bring swift retribution. >> i'm sure to hear abuse from the president and his supporters. >> reporter: he was right. donald trump jr. saying romney, the 2012 republican presidential nominee, should be expelled from the party. overnight the president tweeting, had failed presidential candidate mitt romney devoted the same energy and anger to defeating a faltering barack obama as he sanctimoniously does to me, he could have won the election. republicans have long argued that impeachment would play right into trump's hands in the next election. >> exoneration comes when president trump gets re-elected because the people of the united states are fed up with this crap. >> reporter: but democrats still insist the president's day of reckoning will come. >> my message is simple. don't lose hope. there is justice in this world and truth and right.

>> reporter: many democrats are demoralized. some are talking about continuing the investigations. jerry nadler wants to subpoena john bolton, president trump's former security advise and see what he has to say. >> many are saying that. okay, thank you, terry. we have new developments now in the coronavirus outbreak. cases are topping 28,000 worldwide and the death toll is nearing 600. now china, the center of the outbreak, is cracking down. ian pannell is in hong kong with more. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. a serious development in china with a senior official citing what she calls wartime conditions ordering a roundup of all infected patients and those they've come in contact with sent to quarantine camps in wuhan. haunting images from that city that's home to millions show it's almost totally deserted. meanwhile it looks as though

this small window of freedom that was opening up in china over this crisis is now beginning to close. over the last few weeks we've seen highly unusual public criticism of the government's mishandling of the outbreak being tolerated but now some of those online articles are simply disappearing. at camps on the social media platform chats are being suspended and medical sources have told us they've been instructed not to do interviews and phone calls from hospitals are being monitored. michael? >> thank you for that, ian. hundreds of americans are evacuating from china heading to one of five military facilities in california, texas and nebraska. will carr is at one of them. he's there at travis air force base near sacramento with more. good morning, will. >> reporter: michael, with those cases of coronavirus surging there's now set to be two more planes of americans packed with americans. they will be monitored every step of the way and go into

quarantine for at least two weeks. this morning, hundreds of americans in wuhan ground zero for the novel coronavirus are stuck, all waiting to board the plane back to the united states. >> they told us that we have a mandatory 14-day quarantine. >> reporter: sergio mccrae from virginia has been teaching in wuhan for six years. he decided to evacuate because of the conditions. wuhan once a transportation hub in central china is now deserted. these images show the streets, bridges and the airport. with the city on lockdown, wuhan has turned into a ghost town. >> they are trying their best to make sure people aren't spreading this. it does make one feel a bit trapped. >> reporter: yu len, a resident and passenger on a recent flight is grateful for the state department's evacuation as well as the food and resources on his flight back. he's now quarantined stateside. >> right now it starts to look bad, i think because the medical resources are so overwhelmed. medical staff from all over the country coming to help. >> reporter: overnight here in the u.s., three adults and one child who just arrived from

china were all hospitalized with a fever or a cough. they're now under observation in san diego. this comes as a 12th american just tested positive for the virus. the latest in wisconsin. so far two of those infected caught the virus from a spouse. the rest brought the back from china. cdc says the virus is most likely spreading when someone sneezes or coughs. >> can somebody spread the virus without showing symptoms? >> is it possible? yes, we do not think this is driving the outbreak. this is an emerging virus and so we're still learning more and more every day. >> reporter: the cruise ship off the coast of japan carrying more than 3,500 people confirmed ten more passengers tested positive including two americans. roger and kerry, an american couple, are on the ship quarantined in their rooms. >> we have no interaction with any other guests. so we're just opening up our door to get breakfast, lunch and dinner. >> reporter: japan is already on edge.

with just six months to go before the summer olympics in tokyo, local media is reporting the chief executive of the games admits they're, quote, extremely worried about the virus' impact on the olympics. as for the next round of americans coming back to the united states from china, they're set to go to military bray sises in san attorney, texas and omaha, nebraska. cecilia. >> okay, will, thank you very much. we turn to the race for the white house. the new hampshire primary just five days away but the results from those bungled iowa caucuses are still shaking up the race. more results now in. take a look at this. the gap tightening between pete buttigieg and bernie sanders. elizabeth warren solidly in third place and joe biden right there in fourth. this all sets the stage for our debate tomorrow night and whit johnson is right there in manchester with the very latest. good morning, whit. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning to you. it is a slow, agonizing drip of results from iowa. the top two candidates here still trying to seize their moment and for joe biden, a

clear strategy shift, ready to fight here in new hampshire. overnight, new returns trickling in from the iowa caucus show pete buttigieg and senator bernie sanders locked neck and neck for first with nearly all precincts reporting just a fraction of a percentage point separates the two candidates. >> i don't think most people thought we'd get anywhere close to this point. >> reporter: on the trail in new hampshire, the former mayor of south bend, indiana, says his big finish is further proof voters want to leave the politics of the past. >> how do you think you were able to outperform other moderates in the race like joe biden? >> i think the key is to focus on the future and a desire to win and every time my party has won in the last half century it's been with a candidate focussed on the future and opening the door for the future generation. >> reporter: sanders' campaign claims when all the votes are counted they'll take top prize in iowa. >> we are winning the popular vote. >> reporter: writing in an email to supporters that the senator has a viable path forward to achieve a clean sweep and retake the lead in state delegate equivalents and national pledged

delegates. what is clear from the results, disappointment for former vice president joe biden coming in fourth. >> i am not going to sugar coat it. we took a gut punch in iowa. >> reporter: biden now on the attack swinging at sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist. >> if senator sanders is the nominee for the party, every democrat in america up and down the ballot will have to carry the label senator sanders has chosen for himself. >> reporter: biden also hitting buttigieg on his experience. >> for this party to nominate someone who's never held an office higher than mayor of a town of 100,000 people in indiana, i do believe it's a risk. >> reporter: joe biden will have another major test here in the new hampshire primary. senator bernie sanders is leading in recent statewide polls. he's from a neighboring state and four years ago he won big here over hillary clinton. cecilia? >> it's basically his home turf for him. whit, thank you. as we said tomorrow night our abc news debate, the final

american who grew up poor in new york state but hit the silver screen in the 1940s and never looked back. >> dark has a light of its own. >> reporter: appearing in more than 80 films throughout his life, including "champion" for which he received his first oscar nomination. his third nomination would be for his turn as vincent van gogh in "lust for life." in addition to starring in popular films like "20,000 leagues under the sea," he would be known for his chiseled good looks and tough guy persona. he relished his work as he told "gma." >> if there is a secret, it's enthusiasm. as long as you enjoy doing what you're doing and it's exciting, you want to keep doing it. >> reporter: his impact on hollywood measured not just in front of the camera but also behind it starting his own production company in 1955 which hired a number of writers blacklisted at the start of the

the first senator ever to vote to remove a president of his own party. now, president trump is blasting him and is expected to take a victory lap just a few hours from now. also take a look at this. that's astronaut christina koch landing back on earth after a record-breaking 328 days in space completing the longest single spaceflight by a woman. she was also part of the first all-female space walk. >> i love the two thumbs up. >> that's pretty amazing. >> i'm back on earth. >> home. >> happy to be back. >> yeah. good for her. >> thank you so much. now to the investigation into that deadly plane crash overseas. a plane sliding off the runway in turkey ripping into pieces killing three people and injuring more than 170. maggie rulli has the latest. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: hey, michael. yeah, passengers on board that flight describe a rough ride with a bumpy landing but they say that everything seemed to be normal. that is, until, officials say, that plane began sliding for nearly 200 feet before crashing off the runway.

this morning, a closer look at this turkish jet liner completely ripped into pieces with 183 people on board. after the pegasus airlines plane seen here unable to stop on an istanbul runway disappears down an embankment and breaks into three pieces. the face of the airplane seen upside down. passengers scrambling out of the destroyed fuselage and emergency exits. one passenger says the plane wobbled side to side falling into the embankment. he describes smelling gas and then climbing up the embankment with a broken arm hearing officials say there was a threat of the plane exploding. a line of emergency vehicles seen rushing to the crash site. dozens of rescuers flood the scene helping the 179 people injured including children. at least three people did not survive. the state department tells abc news that the u.s. is monitoring the plane crash in istanbul

closely and stands ready to provide all appropriate consular services to u.s. citizens in need. authorities are still investigating what could have gone wrong but say weather may have been a factor. overnight the airlines released a statement saying they will deploy every resource available to help those affected. guys? >> good to know. all right, maggie, thank you. now we have the latest on the search for those missing idaho siblings. their mother has still not brought them forward and now there's new surveillance video that is raising more questions about her behavior around their disappearance. will reeve is here with that. good morning, will. >> good morning, robin. the video comes from a storage facility in idaho that authorities say vallow began renting around the time her children disappeared last fall. the unit reportedly hasn't been touched since police searched it in november. and it may have some valuable items and information inside. this morning, investigators looking for clues in this surveillance video from an idaho

storage facility where lori vallow rented a unit. video obtained by east idaho news reportedly showing vallow and several others making numerous trips to the facility in october and november around the time her children were reported missing, carrying large items in and out of the locker. according to east idaho news police obtained a search warrant for vallow's home and the storage unit finding children's bikes, photo albums, blankets and clothing in the unit. >> can you tell me where your kids are? >> reporter: it's been one week since vallow ignored a deadline to physically produce her children, failing to bring 17-year-old tylee ryan and 7-year-old j.j. to authorities, the kids have been missing since september. vallow and her new husband, chad daybell, fleeing idaho, heading to hawaii one day after authorities performed a welfare check looking for the kids. >> where are your kids? >> no comment. >> no comment? they've been missing for four months. you have nothing to say? >> reporter: vallow married daybell last year just days after his wife died and three

months after her husband was shot to death by her brother. police are now investigating the death of daybell's former wife. >> particles of light were coming towards my body and latching on to me. >> reporter: daybell has written religious books and given speeches about what he describes as two near-death experiences. those close to vallow have said that her behavior has changed in the past year. >> ever since she's been involved in this doomsday cult, that is not the same lori that we knew for 13 years. and the last year has just been nonunderstandable. >> reporter: vallow's oldest son colby still pleading with his mom for answers about his siblings. >> i feel like my mom would die for the kids. so to see this and hear it and also be questioning why they're not being found, that's where all this comes into like a battle between what you think and what you feel. >> colby ryan says he's been

coronavirus. cases are topping 28,000 worldwide. hundreds of americans are evacuating from china heading to one of five military facilities, and we're going to go back to will carr at the travis air force base near sacramento. good morning again, will. >> reporter: michael, we saw another surge of coronavirus cases in china overnightm and cases in china overnight and the death toll just continues to go up every day. right now more than 560 people have died in china. with that in mind, two more planes packed with hundreds of americans are going to be coming back to the united states. they're leaving china and heading to military bases in san antonio, texas and omaha, nebraska. authorities say they will be monitored every step of the way and will be in quarantine for at least two weeks. overnight four people including a child who just came back from china started showing symptoms while in quarantine in san diego. they're all being tested right now for the virus. overall 12 americans here in the united states have been infected, and while the cdc says the risk to americans here is low, the world is on edge.
