department. >> meanwhile, an intellectual property dispute is brewing over a drug made by foster city-based company gilead. scientists in china have applied to patent an experimental drug to treat coronavirus infected patients. there is an international rule that could allow china to force gilead to patent the drug. gilead applied for a patent in 2016 but is waiting for a decision. >> infectious disease doctors from two prestigious research institutes held an event today to share what is known and what scientists are still learning about coronavirus. >> the goal is really quite simple, replace fear with fact. abc7 news reporter eric thomas is live in mission bay with the information that was passed along today. >> the first thing researchers wanted people to know is they are familiar with coronaviruss. in fact many colds, about 30% of them are caused by a coronavirus. this one is a new strain, and
6:02 pm
they are still learning the exact makeup of it. >> it looks like this is a less lethal virus. >> reporter: statistically, that's true, but emotionally, so is this. >> this is a very scary and fast-moving infection. >> reporter: infectious disease doctors hosted a seminar today to try to convert fear of the coronavirus into knowledge. >> there should be no alarm. flu is a far more major threat to people's lives. >> reporter: researchers from the independent gladstone biomedical research institutes teamed up with a colleague from ucsf to share the latest information about the coronavirus with health professionals and the general public. the doctor said it is now confirmed that the virus is primarily spread person to person and that it's a close cousin of two deadly viral outbreaks from the past. >> sars, 2000 to 2004, and then mers, the middle eastern respiratory syndrome in 2012. >> reporter: this new strain of
6:03 pm
virus appears to spread faster than the others, but seems less lethal than either. the doctors agree the flu is a much bigger concern, claiming 10,000 lives just this flu season, and the steps we take to prevent the flu will also help guard against coronavirus. >> wash your hands. masks are really probably not that effective. >> reporter: there is no vaccine and current treatment options start with the antiviral tamiflu alongside some anti-hiv drugs, but they are not sure how effective the treatment. they are certain what we know about the ailment today may change tomorrow. >> i think it's really important to realize that this is a very rapidly changing outbreak. >> there are new drugs in the pipeline that show promise. at least they hope it will attack the virus where it lives. but those haven't come out yet. so for the meantime, they are doing what they can, and doing a lot of experimentation and a lot of research on what is working and what is not.
6:04 pm
and, again, they're trying to share whatever information they have, these doctors are, but they're still learning new things every day as well. live in san francisco, eric thomas, abc7 news. >> now eric, are they concerned at all about finding an effective treatment, only to have this virus mutate into something resistant to current drugs? >> well, doctors already told us today that this particular strain of the coronavirus has mutated seven times, but they say the good news here is that it is not a fast mutating strain of virus. therefore they're not worried about it surprising them with a quick change to another type of virus. they think that it's slow enough that they can stay ahead of it, once they find a treatment that is effective. >> right. eric thomas reporting live for us tonight, thank you. two lunar new year's celebrations in the bay area this week are still happening as planned. the oakland museum of california says they are monitoring the outbreak ahead of their noontime event saturday, but have no plans to cancel.
6:05 pm
in san francisco today, city officials held a news conference to address coronavirus concerns before the parade planned in the city on saturday. board of supervisors president norman yi was joined by several city officials including the san francisco police chief and the fire chief. he says it's not right that chinese people are being blamed for the coronavirus outbreak. >> sometimes we create fear, and sometimes it may be rightfully so. but in this case in the united states, in san francisco, in the bay area, the creation of this fear is unfounded. there is more people getting hit by a car right now than people actually catching this. >> yee says people should come out and celebrate this weekend to support the community and the culture. a bay area family flew all the way to southeast asia for what some would call a trip of a lifetime, only to turn around and come back to the u.s. once they realized the severity of coronavirus. abc7 news reporter chris win has more on the proactive steps they're now taking to keep
6:06 pm
others from getting sick, even though they themselves aren't even ill. >> a peninsula family is now in a self-imposed quarantine after their trip to asia was cut short. >> we just felt like we could have been exposed to it. we're not sure. >> gale yip was on her way to singapore for a celebrity cruise as cases of the coronavirus grew exponentially in china. but on touching down, she and her travel mates knew they'd have a tough call to make, to either board the trip for a two-week trip scheduled to dock in multiple asian countries, or to return home. most of them chose the latter. >> we planned it a year ago. there were going to be 16 of us, and we met beforehand talking about the cruise, and we're all getting excited. >> we went to yip's home on the peninsula, but did an interview through facetime. that's because upon returning to the u.s., yip and her family voluntarily decided to quarantine themselves for two weeks, even though they're not sick and haven't shown any symptoms.
6:07 pm
>> it's the better thing to do for us. that's the decision that we all made. >> again, yip doesn't want to take any chance, even though she was in singapore for just a few days. better safe than sorry, she says, as she begins the third day of her self-imposed quarantine. we also spoke to yip's sister-in-law, who was on the trip as well. >> a lot of people, like i said, know that we went to asia, and i don't want to cause mass hysteria also if i show up at a grocery store and have them say what are you doing here. >> as for the cruise, it turns out they may have made the right decision. the yips have since learned that the ship has been denied entry at multiple ports. >> hopefully we don't have this, right. we don't have the coronavirus, but that we don't want -- if we were, we don't want to be responsible to infect other people. >> on the peninsula, chris nguyen, abc7 news. >> and as news breaks about the spread of coronavirus, we will send the late west the abc7 news

6:11 pm
and are still looking for him to make an arrest. he has a past criminal record, though door dash said he cleared a background check three months before the attack. they have permanently deactivated the dasher from their platform. >> congratulations. give us your beautiful smile. >> meanwhile, dr. pi finished frederick's surgery, and his new smile is nearly complete. >> i'm really excited. >> kate larsen, abc7 news. >> wow. that's great. >> it really is. coming up, new at 6:00 tonight, 7 on your side's michael finney with an update on a class action trial against fastrak. >> they keep trying to keep the public out of the courtroom for this. 7 on your side is making sure you know what's going on. i think people have a stereotype about who is out here. >> yes. >> what would you tell them? >> i'd tell them that not everybody is on drugs, not everybody is drinking. >> she's one of the thousands of people in the bay area who are homeless. tonight you'll hear her story. i'm spencer christian.

truckers by placing large boulders on the shoulder. they've been inundated with nearby businesses and workers about debris and trash left behind there. the changes in fremont are the latest in a series of moves we've seen around the bay area. last week a major change in santa rosa. 200 intab hasn'ts of a massive homeless camp which had taken over the joe rodota trail moved out. they were facing a deadline to move or be cited and arrested. a homeless camp has become an eyesore. kaiser permanente is funding a program to move people who have taken over the corner of mosswood park which sits across the street from kaiser's oakland facility. >> so often it seems we do reporting on people homeless in the bay area by focusing on them as a group. >> today we want to bring you on story in particular, a reminder that this issue is really about individuals. >> it is. here is abc7 news reporter laura anthony. >> i'm in this situation not because i want to be, but
6:16 pm
because i have to be for now. >> oakland's sat sataana ballars learned ever not good to stay in one place too long. for five months the 47-year-old has been living in her car, an suv, one she prides on keeping immaculate. >> i just have to keep things neatly and in order for me, because i'm always -- i've been a neat freak almost all my life. >> ballard began living in her car after moving out of an abusive relationship, leaving a husband and a home in oakland she's known for decades. >> i was in debt with the house. i'm in debt without a house. there is no difference. >> i think people have a stereotype about who's out here. >> yes. what would you tell them? >> i tell them that not everybody is on drugs. not everybody is drinking. >> and despite having extensive experience as a social worker and a security guard, among other jobs, steady work has been

hard to find. ballard told us she has a few preferred spots, parking lots like this one near the coliseum, patrolled by oakland police and frequented by others whose only home is also a car. >> you're constantly always up, always watching your surroundings. it's hard. this is not easy. >> ballard did some driving for uber and gets occasional on call work at the port of oakland. but we're told she is penalized if she makes too much money. >> if i work one day, i don't even qualify for my unemployment, which is not barely anything to live on. >> so what do you need? >> i need a job. and i'm not -- i'm not irresponsible at all. so this is very difficult to be drowning in debt. and nobody, nobody has given me an opportunity to work full-time permanent with benefits.

>> here is a live look at drivers crossing the golden gate bridge, because fastrak and the golden gate bridge district made a new attempt this week to shut the public out of the courtroom during secret parts of a class action trial against them. >> also, the company that runs fastrak claims the class action lawyers have been lying to the court and fabricating evidence for years. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is watching things heat up and watching what's happening very closely. >> let me tell you, this class action case is growing more contentious. now the testimony is about to begin. you may recall the lawsuit claims thousands of motorists have been unfairly charged for toll evasion and penalties on the golden gate bridge. transit agencies asked a judge to ban the public and media from entering the courtroom during much of the trial. they say their toll collection policy should be kept secret from all of us or we might use it to get free rides on our bridges. now there is an attempt to throw out the entire case.
6:30 pm
it all began when the golden gate bridge switched to all electronic tolling in 2013. drivers without fastrak were supposed to receive toll invoices in the mail. however, the class action lawsuit claims thousands of drivers never received their toll invoices, mostly due to address mistakes, and it says fastrak didn't try to find the motorists, just piled on penalties. >> i didn't get sent one notice ever. >> the policy was that if the mail went out and came back undeliverable as addressed, they shredded the mail and imposed a penalty. >> reporter: in the first year, a quarter million drivers received toll evasion penalties. now fastrak and the golden gate bridge district said they improved their policies for handling tolls and disputes. however, they want to keep those policies a secret from the public, saying motorists might t ga sysm a avoid tolls and violation penalties. so that end, the transit agencies are asking a judge to
6:31 pm
ban the public from the courtroom when those confidential policies are discussed at trial. 7 on your side is objecting, saying public policies are supposed to be made public, not kept secret. the judge so far is keeping the courtroom open, but suggested attorneys could avoid bringing up those confidential policies during the trial. however, in another move on wednesday, defense lawyers filed papers accusing the class action attorneys of committing misconduct and fraud in their case. they say the lawsuit was, quote, a money grab from the start based on falsehoods, fraud, and altered documents. they ask the judge to dismiss the claims against the company operating fastrak, and that the class action team pay them a $61,000 penalty. class action lawyer told the judge the allegations are baseless, intended to stop him from preparing for trial. the testimony begins in march. so what is it the fastrak is trying to hide from all of us?
6:32 pm
