quarantined cruise ship has tripled. another 41 people on the ship off the coast of japan have tested positive for the virus bringing the total to 61. another cruise ship has been quarantined in hong kong after eight passengers caught the virus. in total 7,000 people are now quarantined on the ships including hundreds of americans. >> the only interaction we have is with the staff who are wearing masks and gloves. >> reporter: in china this doctor is being called a national hero after becoming one of the hundreds of patients to die. the 34-year-old issued the first warning about the coronavirus posting a message back on december 30th telling other medical professionals about patients in wuhan with symptoms similar to sars. reports say he was warned by authorities days later for spreading rumors and was forced to sign a letter saying he had made false comments. the doctor continued to see patients until he himself started showing symptoms. back in the u.s. two more planes packed with americans evacuating china are set to land

at two military bases today. pictures from the department of defense show rooms in eppley air field in nebraska, where passengers will be quarantined for two weeks. they'll have wi-fi, tvs, exercixe areas and games for children but no access to anyone except the medical professionals in full protective gear. >> none of our staff have said they don't want to do this. this is what we've signed up for. this is our career. so we're all here. >> reporter: in the health officials say they are learning more about the virus including its dna, but they caution there's still many unknowns about the virus including its origin. >> to put it bluntly, we're shadow boxing. we need to bring this virus out into the light so we can attack it properly. >> u.s. health officials are now asking the military to designate areas near airports that could be used to quarantine more americans just in case. the trump administration has confirmed that a top al qaeda leader has been killed. this was in yemen. quassim al rimi was the head of

the terror group's branch in the arabian peninsula. a white house statement did not say when he was killed. there is word this morning that a key witness from president trump's impeachment trial may be soon dismissed from the white house. the president is reportedly planning to reassign lieutenant colonel alexander vindman from the national security council. vindman, who is a decorated iraq war veteran, testified that he was so alarmed by the president's phone call to ukraine that he reported his concerns to white house lawyers. president trump is celebrating his acquittal calling the impeachment trial a disgrace. he used profanity as he explained his frustration to supporters at the white house and he accused gop senator mitt romney of using his mormon faith as a crutch to vote against him. in a new interview, romney explained why he voted to remove the president from office. >> i believe that when i swear an oath to god, i have a responsibility to be exactly truthful, and i am truthful and did what i believe was

absolutely right for our country and hope that going forward people will say, well, whether i agree with him or disagree with him, at least he did what he thought was right. >> trump also took aim at house speaker nancy pelosi for saying she prays for him. he questioned whether she prays at all. we turn now to the race for 2020 and new questions about the iowa caucus results. >> those questions are being raised even though 100% of precincts are now reporting. meanwhile, the candidates are focusing on tonight's big debate in new hampshire. >> abc's ines la cuetara has the latest from the campaign trail. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth and elizabeth. after all the confusion in iowa, the democratic candidates are now turning their focus to new hampshire and hoping tonight's debate can give them a boost. overnight, the two leading democratic candidates trying to move past iowa. bernie sanders and pete buttigieg appearing in separate town halls on cnn. >> we've got enough of iowa. i think we should move on to new hampshire. >> i also know that we're in new hampshire now.

we've got to look ahead. >> reporter: with 100% of precincts reporting, there is still no clear front-runner in the hawkeye state. buttigieg and sanders only 0.1 of a percentage point apart and both declaring victory. chairman tom perez is now calling for a recanvas of iowa telling msnbc. >> i want them to know every iowa voter knows their vote was counted and take our commitment to it seriously. >> reporter: former vice president joe biden who finished in fourth place admitting he took a gut punch in the caucuses but insisting -- >> i'm not going anywhere. i'm counting on new hampshire. we're going to come back. >> reporter: the presidential hopefuls now crisscrossing new hampshire. >> hello, derry. >> hello, exeter, new hampshire. how are you? >> reporter: and they're looking ahead to tonight's abc news/wmur debate. >> new hampshire is not the kind of place to let iowa or anybody else tell you what to do. >> reporter: biden is home in

delaware preparing, and he's already been sharpening his attacks. >> he calls himself a democratic socialist. well, we're already seeing what donald trump is going to do with that. >> reporter: and seven presidential candidates will square off on that debate stage tonight just days ahead of the new hampshire primary. officials there say they are ready for tuesday's vote. kenneth and elizabeth. >> ines, thank you. and you can watch tonight's debate at 8:00 eastern on abc and our streaming channel abc newslive. turning to the weather now, much of the south will be cleaning up and drying out today. one month's worth of rain fell in just a few hours in some areas. look at those winds there. the downpours at one point knocked out power to more than 100,000 customers. the storms are blamed for at least four deaths. meanwhile, in raleigh, north carolina, this new video shows wind blowing apart a sign on interstate 440. pieces of the sign were raining down on cars. no one was hurt. everyone is okay. and along florida's gulf

coast, an amazing rescue. an 81-year-old woman and her dog were pulled from her mobile home which was destroyed after it was hit by a falling tree. neighbors say she had more than luck on her side. >> god was watching over that lady. >> thank god she is alive. you know, it could be any one of us. >> the woman is now recovering. let's take a closer look now at your forecast for this friday morning. well, good morning to you. we're talking about the winds. very strong winds here from boston all the way down the coast along the southeast coast into the carolinas, so gusty winds. accuweather local storm max up to 60 miles per hour as the storm system strengthens and moves up the coast. it's going to bring in colder air, snow across the interior, buffalo back to syracuse, pittsburgh as well. heaviest snow is across northern new england. upwards of a foot or more up towards the adirondacks.

an investigation by propublica uncovered video of internal crash testing for evenflo's big kid booster seat along with testimony from an engineer saying a child could die if they were thrown like the dummy in a side impact crash. there is no government oversight of side impact testing so companies conduct their own. >> under the rules that evenflo made up, the only way to fail the test is if the dummy is completely thrown out of the seat or if the seat breaks into pieces. >> the report also claims ev evenflo marketed the seat for children as little as 30 pounds, which experts say is below the weight needed to safely ride in them. in a statement evenflo said its seats perform as they're designed to, and the company said it complies with all federal regulations. the suspected gunman in the el paso walmart massacre is now facing federal hate crime charges. he's accused of killing 22 people last august. prosecutors say he carried out the attack in hopes of scaring

credits the dismissal of the case to the possibility of new evidence but says he is disappointed in his successor's decision. >> this is a huge disappointment for those victims. it's not easy for these ladies to come forward and make their statement to the authorities, and they've done that. >> and we'll have much more of the interview later on "good morning america" including why the couple feared for their safety. a jaw-dropping moment in harvey weinstein's sexual assault trial. six accusers testified against the hollywood producer before the defense called its first witness thursday. a mutual friend of weinstein and one accuser. paul feldsher testified there was no reason to believe weinstein was violent but prosecutors then reveal messages from feldsher in which he appeared to justify weinstein's behavior. one message said, i think the dog pile of actresses who are suddenly brave and recalling repressed memories is hideous. no word if weinstein will take the stand. dramatic body camera video shows a georgia police officer saving a baby who could not breathe.

police sergeant harold drummond leaped out of his patrol car and started cpr on the 6-month-old. he used his two fingers to do compressions on his chest and finally after several tense moments, little a.j. started breathing again. >> there you go. >> the fact that i'm having this baby, holding this baby, the fact that i'm looking at their parents and they're begging me and asking me to help him, so i was extremely nervous. i would have preferred to look down the barrel of a gun than to be looking down at a baby who was in distress. >> he got him, and he did what he had to do. >> okay. >> calm down. >> little a.j. and his family were reunited last week and the family wants to stay in touch. former houston astros aj hinch says it's a fair question to ask whether the team's world series championship in 2017 is tainted. hinch is speaking out for the first time since being fired because of a cheating scandal that involved stealing signs. he admits to the mlb network any skepticism about that world series is the team's fault. >> no one can really answer that
