okay, i got some ideas. thank you. today is national wear red day, and i've got my red shoes and my red earrings on. the american heart association's initiative to raise awareness for heart disease, the number-one killer of women, and 10 years ago, our first guest had open-heart surgery, and today, she is living, as they say, her best life. one of my all-time favorite tv moments was hearing her say, "if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything." and she's always taken a stand as a lawyer, a journalist, and most famously one of the original co-hosts of "the view." her parents clearly knew she was destined for the spotlight when they named her starlet. please welcome star jones! [ cheers and applause ] ♪ love your look! >> hi, sweetie. >> there you go. i am so excited. you look amazing!

[ cheers and applause ] listen. >> i like the red. >> i was like, "listen, we're bringing star in, in our red shoes." i have to tell you, we ran into each other -- it was at the tail end of last winter, before the show started, and i was like, "your legacy needs to be celebrated, what you did in tv and what you do for women of color." >> you've always been so supportive. >> and women. and i had, when i was at home, unemployed, i had a list of people i knew i would have on my show, and i always wanted it to be you 'cause you are so special and what you do for women and heart disease and -- i can't praise you enough. >> well, let's just talk about how wonderfully uplifting that is. you know i've always believed that a rising tide lifts all boats. and so it's really imperative that women be supportive of other women, and there's nothing wrong with saying, "i got her back just 'cause she's a chick." there's not a thing wrong with it. >> it shouldn't be. >> right, and so i got all of your backs and i love my people in red, national wear red day.

>> i just told that one quote about you -- you know, you say, "if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." i remember watching "the view" that day and i was like, "that's a motto. in fact, that's a tattoo." but in your memoir, you said that your mother will tell you that you are the author of the only dictionary that defines you. >> 100% because you have to be in control of your own narrative, and i'm not sure that i always knew that. i heard it from her, but i'm not sure that i embraced it. and so, in addition to being the author of the only dtionary, i'm the editor also. so i get to edit it. i get to change it up. i get to make it work for me, and that's really -- i have to tell you, i've had such a purpose-driven life for the last 10 years, especially, since my diagnosis of heart disease. i'm a heart-disease survivor, but a heart-disease thriver. honey, this is the face of heart disease. >> i know. [ applause ] and again those memories that i have of you, i remember waking up and people saying, "oh, my gosh, star jones said she almost

died. what's going on?" and you revealed that at the time that you had the heart attack, you were actually in good shape. you had started focusing in on your health. >> it gets worse than that. i never had a heart attack. this is the thing that most women don't understand. you can have heart disease without having a heart incident. >> really? >> so, here's one of the issues. for the vast majority of my adult life, i was obese or morbidly obese. now, mind you, you don't need to be sensitive about that statement. obesity, morbid obesity, i say it real straight because i wasn't fluffy, i wasn't plus-sized. i wasn't "overweight." i was dying. >> do you remember at the top of your weight what you were? >> oh, heck yeah. i remember the day i went in for weight-loss surgery. i weighed 307 pounds. and so, for my entire adult life, i blamed not feeling well on the obesity. but once i lost the weight, and

i lost 160 pounds -- i'm so proud that for the last 15 years i've kept 140 pounds off. but so, at 160 pounds low, i thought to myself, "i should feel great." >> right. >> i got heart palpitations. i felt like somebody was punching me in the chest. i would get light-headed when i'd go from seated to standing, and, tamron, i listened to my body. i went in to see a cardiologist. i actually, in between meetings, i said, "oh, i got a lunch at michael's. i'm going over there, but let me pop in and see this cardiologist." he said, "no, there will be no popping. you'll be going to the cath lab." he removed one liter of fluid from around my heart on that day. >> that day? >> on that day. 48 hours later, i got the diagnosis i needed open-heart surgery, the real kind, where they crack your chest, take your heart out of your body. my heart was out for 22 minutes. [ audience gasps ] but they put it back in. [ applause ]
