>> announcer: news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. mellow, everyone. good mornng to you. it's a saturday, february the 8th. i'm julian glover we have a lot to talk about this saturday morning. as always we start it offith a look at the weekend forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> hey, julian. good morning. hi, everyone. a bit of cloud cover, patchy fog around the bay, dense in spots. the visibility, a quarter mile in the north bay. santa rosa to petaluma. 3/4 of a mile out by the delta. you can see in livermore it's restricted at a quarter mile. in the south bay with the clouds it's 49 in san jose. looking closer to the bay, up he were 40s. we have upper elevation wind

allowing for temperatures to be fairly uniform. low 40s up there where it is coolest. but we look for the fog to clear, cooler today, breeze du with winds out of the west northwest as a dry cold front pushes through the bay area. we'll see 60s, plenty of sun but then a wind advisory posted for tonight through monday. we'll talk about that in the cool down coming up. we start with developing news, the latest on the coronavirus as a u.s. citizen died in china from it. a u.s. embassy spokesperson telling nbc news the citizen why died in wuhan, a woman with underlying health conditions. it's currently believed this is the first death of a u.s. citizen from the outbreak. the embassy said they are not providing additional information out of respect for the family privacy. so far 722 people died from the virus worldwide. infecting more than 34,000

people and trapped on a cruise ship off the coast of japan more than 60 passengers have the virus and 11 are americans. luz pena has the latest on that. >> reporter: this is what quarantine at sea looks like. >> everything changed in a blinch. yesterday i was in a cruise ship, happy going along and entertainment. i can do swimming. now today i'm just in jail. >> julie choy 15 day starred january 20th. five a dates later taking a turn when a man onboard tested positive. 64 people tested positive including at least 11 americans. the diamond princess cruise ship is anchored off the coast of japan. >> when i tried to find out who gets sick, is it my next room, nobody say anything. >> even though choy is not symptom attic her every day routine begins with taking her temperature.

feisty contrafrts. seven democrats took to the debate stage last night fresh off iowa caucuses. trevor alt with the highlights. >> good morning from what remains at the spin room from the college last night. last night seven democratic challengers gathering for the debate. fiery. the first time they were together and willing to go after each other. the debate began on a diz ar note. joe biden coming out saying yes he had a poor showing in iowa and also likely a poor showing in new hampshire too but then of course he went on the attack. he went after bernie sanders who performed well in iowa. talking about the medicare for all plan and talking about now expensive it would be. and then that set off the stagewide debate about health care with a number of candidates getting involved. take a listen. >> what bernie says and he says

he wrote the damn thing but unwilling to tell us what it costs. it will cost more than the entire -- the entire federal budget we spent spend now. >> what medicare for all will do is save the average american substantial sums of money. >> the affordable care act is now nearly ten points more popular than the president of the united states. why would we talk about blowing it up. >> we can start making health care better for americans from the beginning. but we have to agree to do that. >> and then throughout the night a recurring theme was candidas going after mayor pete buttigieg, the other candidate performing well in iowa. a number of candidates hitting him for his lack of experience, senator amy choeb klobuchar went after him a number of times. senator warren did too and bernie sanders signed to the blossoming rivalry. he attacked buttigieg for taking in donations from billionaires. looking ahead, the new hampshire primary three days

away. we had delays in the iowa caucus results the preventing buttigieg or sanders from having the big moment in the spotlight saying they were vikts on the night of the caucus. on tuesday once the votes are counted it's a secret ballot. we'll likely see the first candidate from the 2020 race get to walk on stage and claim victory. abc news, manchester, new hampshire. a lot said in that three-hour debate. the fact checkers were hard at work last night to find out which claims hold up. head over to the website, abc 7 news.com. michael bloomberg, the former mayor of new york was not on last night's stage because he failed to qualify. but the billionaire is still making sure potential voters know his name. yesterday came word he wants to pay social media influencers $150 to say why they like mike upon instagram and twitter. at devin dwyer explains bloomberg is making good on the

word to capitalize on the chaos in iowa but doubling down on on his campaign. >> while his competitors barnstorm iowa bloomberg is sitting out caucusing entirely. charting his own path for the race of 2020. >> the media mogul taking an untested approach to his campaign, skipping the first four primary contests. instead he visited every supertuesday state weeks before the voters head to the polls. zeroing in on delegate rich targets like california and texas. >> i'm going to go and deal with the other states. and nobody is going to the other states except two people. myself and donald trump. >> outside of iowa bloomberg's campaign bankroll is swelling. >> he put his money where his heart is helping to create a movement. >> he spent more than $200 million on ads. >> i heard bloomberg speak. he has been in the fight so long. >> spending a lot of moep but my investment is to keep donald trump from being a president. want me to spend less to get rid

gaining attention online. amanda del castillo explains why. >> reporter: there is no shortage of content on the internet and a recent reddit post is racking up comments and compassion for a homeless woman in san jose. >> my connection on reddit helped me from being alienated from society like a lot of people out here for a long time easy to become that way. >> robin powers has been whomless five years. she used red sit posting i got a call from housing. putting a roof over her head. >> i had a two bedroom apartment. i worked in accounting. >> now powers is divorced and suffers from a connective tissue disorder keeping her from work. living under the freeway to keep the winter weather from destroying all she owns. but powers isn't the only one out there. we reached out to the office of supportive housing to learn the process. no one was available for comment but shared this graphic. it details the county system. all homeless people complete

and pet lump. look at the sand carlos airport, down to zero miles here. very foggy in spots and a mile by the delta. with the dense fog it takes a while for things to improve and the fog could move around a bit. with the cloud cover we are slightly mild they are spots. 4 to 6 degrees warm they are hayward and oakland. but the fog something to contend with and slowing you down. live look outside emeryville, dense fog, a cooler amp a as the front pushes through. the winds kick up and breezy and gusty along the coast. a wind advisory from 7:00 tonight until 11:00 monday morning looking at this dry pattern into early next weak. after next weekend looks like it may change. the wind advisory ton, northeast winds 20 to 35 miles an hour in the valleys. upper elevations could see gusts around 60 miles an hour. this is the north and east bay hills looking at possibility of downed trees, power lines like

last week. warming up through the week. cool down and had the winds last sunday. once again in weekend. it looks like the same thing for next weekend looking at the gusts, 25 to 40 miles an hour already as we get to the next few hours along the coast. around the bay, not bad. but the winds kick up and slightly breezy. that's because of the cold front pushing through. and here we are at 6:00, 10 to 20 miles an hour around the bay but nothing compared to what we see tomorrow with the gusty winds. a little bit of a cooldown today with numbers in the low 60s. yesterday in the upper 60s in san jose about 62 today over into the east bay. 58 in san francisco. you were 63 yesterday. 65 in santa rosa. upper 50s now on the coast. and checking the rainfall for the next ten days, as we get into next weekend, maybe getting a few drops here. that would be after the 14th and 15th. oscar sunday tomorrow with the chance of showers. and they'll have the breezy

>> announcer: news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. welcome back. welcome back. good saturday morning to you. we start this half hour with a look at the forecast here. you are probably worning what it's going to be look as you plan saturday and sunday. we check in now with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning to you. it's mild well above average. today temperatures coming down, a bit breezy. we have a wind advisory posted for tonight. today the warmer day, we have sunshine right now we have patchy fog. 37 in novato. 49 in hayward and fog is dense around the bay from sand carlos up to the north bay and east bay where we have a quarter mile in livermore. so throughout the next few hours we'll certainly have the fog and then getting into 9:00 the fog lifts. we'll have sunshine but then breeze -- the breeze kicks up a bit, allowing for cooler temperatures. by 1:00 we're in the 60s. low to mid-60s throughout the afternoon. certainly not as warm as it's

been. we'll continue the cooldown, add in winds for sunday. but any rain to talk about? i'll have the answer coming up. >> how to the helicopter crash that killed kobe bryant his daughter and seven others. authorities say there is no evidence of engen failure, the focus turning to pilot and conditions. abc news senior transportation correspondent david curly has the latest. >> what may be the last picture of the helicopter kobe bryant was abarred. disappearing in the clouds in southern california. no signs the rotors or failed. witnesses hearing the normal helicopter sounds according to the ntsb report. bryant his daughter and friends heading to a basketball game. all nine dying in the fiery crash. in the bad weather the pilot decided to follow a highway toward the destination. the pilot telling controllers he

was climbing above the trouble. the helicopter does climb. but starts turning left then suddenly a quick descent, more than 180 miles an hour as it continues that left turn crashing into the hillside. a witness on the hill saw the chopper pop out of the fog appear su saw it rolling left. >> was it because the pilot was disoriented or mechanical malfunction causing loss of control control and doomed the helicopter. >> they say it hit a tree before it hit the ground. the blades were turning before the crash. a further investigation will find out if there was any mechanical problem with the helicopter. kobe bryant and the others to be memorialized on february 24th in los angeles. david curly, abc news, washington. this year streaming services hope for big wins at the oscars. the netflix has two big pictures, the merriman story and
