[ laughter ] they don't really have hosts anymore. why is that? >> twitter. >> reporter: producers instead amped up the star power bringing back previous hosts chris rock and steve martin for the opening monologue. >> cynthia did such a great job

in "harriet" hiding black people that the academy got her to hide all the black nominees. >> reporter: the fan favorites also hit hard on the academy's issue with diversity. >> think how much of the oscars have changed in the past 92 years. back in 1929 there were no black acting nominees. >> no, and now in 2020, we got one. >> yeah. amazing growth. >> brad pitt. >> reporter: brad pitt who swept the awards circuit completed his run at the top, winning best supporting actor for his role in "once upon a time in hollywood." this is his first acting oscar ever. >> leo, i'll ride on your coattails any day, man. the view's fantastic. "once upon a time in hollywood," ain't that the truth. this is for my kids who color everything i do. i adore you. thank you. >> laura dern, "marriage story." >> reporter: 28 years after her first nomination, an early birthday present for laura dern

taking home her first statue for "marriage story." >> i would like to say a special thank you to the gifts of the love stories in my life, my stepchildren c.j. and harris, my heart and inspiration, ellery. >> renee zellweger. >> reporter: in a hollywood comeback, renee zellweger grabbed best actress for her role in "judy." this is her second statue since her best supporting actress win in 2003 for "cold mountain." >> judy garland did not receive this honor in her time. i am certain that this moment is an extension of the celebration of her legacy. >> reporter: and joaquin phoenix evoked his late brother river phoenix during his winning speech for best actor in "joker." >> when he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric. he said, run to the rescue with love and peace will follow. thank you. [ applause ] >> reporter: but the night belonged to "parasite." >> "parasite."

>> reporter: the history-making breakout hit taking home four awards and becoming the first foreign language film to win best picture. the audience chanting up, up, after producers seemed to think the team was done speaking, shutting off the lights and taking away the mics. >> hi, everybody. >> reporter: the movie racked up award after award all night, including an upset in the best director category. bong joon ho honoring his idol, martin scorsese, from the stage. the director ending his speech signaling it was time to party. >> thank you. i will drink until next morning. thank you. >> now, it was really cool. bong joon ho has been speaking through a translator most of the award season. he was clear in english at the end of his speeches -- i'm going to go drink tonight. >> made that very clear. >> this is possibly a reflection

of the diversity. they are adding to the voting block. they increased women and people of color and people from other countries over the past few years and say maybe this is a reflection and they still want to get the diversity numbers up for the acting category but this film coming through, yes. >> deserved it. thank you, t.j. >> looking good, t.j. >> as we saw, the very first oscar of the night went to brad pitt. it's his first acting academy award ever, and here take a look. he is getting that statue engraved, and robin, you had a chance to speak with him right after he won. >> i know. we were sitting there in the audience, and then when he won, we ran backstage. he has been -- hard to believe, but he's been in the business for more than 30 years, and last night he picked up his very first acting oscar. he was extraordinarily gracious. >> brad pitt. >> reporter: receiving his first oscar for an acting role, brad pitt winning big taking home the award for best supporting actor

>> it's about staying creative. it's about seeing what comes out. i'm kind of thinking that may be the answer. staying creative and hanging with your loved ones. [ cheers and applause ] >> very, very reflective. he said he's not someone who normally looks back, but when you have that kind of moment, and he was thinking about, you know, going to the drive-in with his folks and all that, but he really -- you could tell he's at a place right now that he's thinking about his legacy. >> seems like a really good place. >> really a great place. you were at a great place backstage. you were talking to the women sweeping the season. >> yes. >> and of course, the cast of "parasite." >> what a treat that was, being there with the "parasite" gang. you know, being in the spot where we were backstage, you catch these stars in a moment right after they win an oscar. they're sort of in a dream state holding that hardware, trying to make sense of the magnitude of the moment. >> renee zellweger.

dern winning her first oscar for best supporting access for her role in "marriage story," sunday night was a family affair. >> some say never meet your heroes, but i say if you're really blessed, you get them as your parents. i share this with my acting heroes, my legends, diane ladd and bruce dern. >> your mom got very emotional that second your name was called. >> she did. >> she started crying. what was that like to share that moment with her? >> amazing. the last time she and i were together at the oscars, we were nominated together for a film "rambling rose." i was 23 i think? i had the privilege of coming here with her when i was a little girl, and with my father in recent years with his nomination, and so this really is dedicated to them. i share it so deeply with their amazing genius. >> reporter: and then there was "parasite" creeping into our hearts and our brains, taking

home four oscars including international feature and best picture, the first non-english speaking film in the academy's 92-year history to do so. >> i thought i was done for the day and was ready to relax. >> reporter: filmmaker bong joon ho also winning for original screenplay and best director, graciously thanking his fellow nominees with the help of a translator. >> translator: when i won best director, i was able to lock eyes with martin, sam, todd and everyone. i didn't know where they were sitting, but i just knew immediately where they were, and i could feel the emotions. >> it was a special feeling. >> i love that you said in your speech you wished you could cut the academy award up in five pieces. >> with a chain saw. >> and share it with those other directors. would you really do that? >> i really love them. >> what is it about "parasite" that everybody loves it so much? >> translator: it's a very surprising narrative that goes through various genres and it's very unpredictable, and also after you watch the film, the audience is left with such a

[ cheers and applause ] >> a big morning after all coming up. we are so excited. first, we have big headlines as well. let's go back to george in new york. >> that's right, guys. thank you. we want to get right to the latest on the coronavirus emergency. there are startling new numbers out now. more than 40,000 people are infected around the world, and the death toll surpassed the sars outbreak. at least 910 people killed. maggie rulli is in japan where that cruise ship is still being quarantined and the number of infections is growing. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, with these new numbers coming in, this cruise ship has the highest concentration of confirmed cases of the virus outside of china. the u.s. embassy is calling this an unprecedented situation and says they're now even visiting patients who are american with this virus in the hospital. this morning the number of

confirmed novel coronavirus cases on board this cruise ship nearly doubling. 65 additional patients bringing the total number on board affected on board to 135 including at least three americans. >> you never think this is going to happen when you're just on vacation living life. >> reporter: rebecca frazier from oregon is one of them, and while the coronavirus can be serious and deadly, so far her treatment in an isolated hospital room on shore has been going well. >> it doesn't even feel like a cold to be perfectly honest. i wouldn't have known that there was anything wrong with me if they hadn't tested me. >> reporter: her husband had to stay behind on the ship. so far, he's tested negative. >> they said it was going to be three days and when she got there, it was going to be 14. so it's a lot longer than we expected. >> reporter: he's on day six of a minimum 14-day quarantine on board the diamond princess. many passengers on the ship are now concerned about the ventilation system fearing the virus may spread through vents. although there is no evidence to

support this, many say the lack of information and feeling of helplessness is putting them on edge. this passenger and his wife were celebrating their honeymoon looking forward to a 30-day cruise. now the two are on day six of a 14-day quarantine. >> we aren't sick, and we want to keep it that way. we want to keep our interaction with other people as limited as possible and also i don't want to roam the halls because i don't know how clean the ship is. we are quarantined in our room. we're not in a -- how they put it, a perfectly sealed bubble to keep us from what could or could not happen, you know? >> reporter: as of this morning there are more than 40,000 people infected worldwide and more than 900 have died mostly in mainland china. the virus now killing more people than at the height of the sars epidemic in 2002. princess cruises is offering everyone on board a full refund including air fare and any extra charges and they're even

offering a voucher for another cruise. and guys, get this. we have asked a bunch of people on board if they're going to get back on a cruise ship, and so far all of them have said yes. george? >> that's a surprising one. okay, maggie. thanks very much. let's go back to michael in l.a. all right. thank you, george, and now to some royal news. harry and meghan making their first appearance together in the u.s. since announcing they were stepping back from royal duties, but they're not done with obligations yet. the queen reportedly asked them to return for an official royal event. will reeve is at buckingham palace with more. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. since that shocking announcement, everyone has been wondering where harry and meghan would go and what they would do. reports of their first public sighting since the announcement come from a place a bit warmer than london in the winter, miami where the couple was surrounded by a bunch of a-list names at an event. it's official. harry and meghan have made their first public appearance together

since announcing their split from the royal family, providing a glimpse at what their new lives could soon be like. technically still full-time working royals until later in the spring, the duke and duchess of sussex made their way to miami's one hotel on south beach for an exclusive jpmorgan investment summit. >> private speaking engagements like this can net anywhere up to $1 million for high profile figures like harry and meghan. this wasn't about eastern earning money for them. it was about establishing themselves in front of a new audience. many people they met could be potential investors in their upcoming projects. >> reporter: among other famous faces at the event were alex rodriguez and basketball star magic johnson, seen here with philanthropist robert smith. the royal pair commanding center stage at the private event with people confirming they were seated next to "a" list power couple jennifer lopez and a-rod. the duke and duchess began their transition away from royal

duties last month moving from the uk to north america. a source telling "people," quote, they're enjoying living a quiet life. they go for long walks and do yoga and meghan cooks. they love being in canada, but they're looking at houses in l.a. too. >> meghan has family over there, doria, of course, her mother. it's also the home of hollywood and where a lot of their upcoming projects will no doubt be based. >> reporter: now it seems the uk is calling. with royal duties still left on their calendar, harry and meghan may return to england at the request of the queen. the couple reportedly expected to attend the annual commonwealth service at westminster abbey on march 9th, possibly their last event as working senior royals. we don't know yet if harry and meghan were paid for that appearance, but something like that could fetch them a reported $1 million. those reports are unconfirmed. as for the reports of when harry and meghan will step back from their senior royal duties in the spring, the official start of spring in uk is march 20th. that could be a date to keep an eye on, guys. >> all right.
