you're just joining us, this express lane you'll be experiencing overnight so what you need to know is these nightly lane closures will be on 101 between 380 and whipple avenue in redwood city and this will create 22 miles of express lanes so it's an exciting project but it will cause a little trouble for people overnight from 10:00 p.m. until 5:30 in the morning. a live look now at the richmond/san rafael bridge. things are moving smoothly for the most part and moving over now to san jose 280 a nice and clear ride. happening today we expect to hear from a man accused of killing a young woman on b.a.r.t. >> john cowell will take the stand and it follows emotional testimony from the family of the victim nia wilson. reporter amy hollyfield with more on this. >> reporter: the victim's family is bracing for this. if john lee cowell even shows up. cowell got kicked out of the courtroom during opening statements because he kept shouting out at the prosecutor.

he hasn't returned but today he is expected to be on the witness stand. he is facing a murder and attempted murder charge on the attack on nia wilson and on her sister, nia. nia's mother says she will be there for his testimony. >> taking the stand, that's what they say. a tough day in court. both sisters testify. cowell's attorney says he suffers from schizophrenia and was hearing voices when he attacked the sisters. the judge found him competent to stand trial. cowell has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. if convicted he could be sentenced to life in prison without parole. live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

the new hampshire primary is under way. senator aimy klobuchar is leading. mayor michael bloomberg won in another township even though he's not on the ballot. recent polls show bernie sanders who hails from vermont with the lead followed by former mayor pete buttigieg. new hampshire's ballot is much easier to administer than the iowa caucuses and results could be in tonight. developing news this morning the world health organization has assembled a group of experts. >> the worldwide coronavirus death toll has exceeded 1,000 with almost all of those deaths in china. china has reported the flu like disease killed more than 100 people in just one day. coronavirus has infected more than 43,000 people.

aperson in san diego county has tested positive. that person had been evacuated from wuhan. there are now 13 confirmed cases. a patient is back in the hospital after they were released by mistake. the patient evacuated china and came to the u.s. last week. the patient was taken to the hospital and discharged when the coronavirus test came back negative but then further testing showed the patient actually has coronavirus. the patient went back to the hospital and is said to be doing well. the patient never made contact with the public. they went into quarantine. med share and partners are helping fight the coronavirus in china. the humanitarian group announced it was sending 1.5 million masks and gowns. they've had the supplies but have been waiting for a crisis

the winds and the crazy temperatures they're creating still the big story this morning. a look at the south bay where 57 in san jose is the warm spot, but you go down to morgan hill where there's no wind. it's 24 degrees cooler with frost possible even with this dry air, 33 degrees. look at newark, alameda, danville, bodega bay, half moon bay. 60 to 63 degrees right now including napa, almost a 25 degree spread this morning. that's usually what we have during the afternoon in the summer. we have an east/northeast wind. hold on to the steering wheel.

opportunities and the opportunity to earn money. the judge said the court will not second-guess legislation. the owner of the escooter company shut down by the city of san francisco says he's back in business but still doesn't have the permits to operate. the chronicle is reporting the owner plans to sell his fleet to the hotels and bike rental shops that house them. they are accused of parking illegally and using fake permits with the city's seal. the company needs a permit to operate. one of the most pressing questions in the dog world gets answered tonight. >> that's which dog will be best in show. you pick but really the judges will pick because they have seven dogs that have already won at the group level at the kennel club dog show. this year the competition featuring more than 2,600 dogs including my favorite here.

cleaner result. we might see a declared state victor. back to the story earlier, a woman is in the hospital after being hit by a car along san bruno avenue in san francisco. police are trying to figure out if this was intentional. it happened outside a nightclub around 2:15 this morning. officers arrested the driver of the car that hit the woman and told us the victim is expected to survive. developing news on the coronavirus outbreak. >> this follows china reporting more than 100 people died in just one day from this flu like disease. coronavirus infected more than 43,000 people around the world. a person in san diego county has tested positive. they had been evacuated from wuhan. there are now 13 cases in the united states. santa clary county declared

enter pleas. 34-year-old shuo zeng died outside the starbucks while trying to get the laptop back. prosecutors believe lee took zeng's computer and byron reid drove the getaway car. wiggins also faces charges in zeng's death. a heads-up if your commute takes you along the peninsula. starting tonight get ready to deal with lane closures as workers start a major project to build express lanes. >> reporter julian glover is live along 101 in redwood city. good morning, julian. >> reporter: good morning. highway 101 potential delays is enough to make you roll your eyes. that's the reality if your morning commute takes you along in the peninsula. starting tonight caltrans will put in closures from 9:00 p.m., wrapping up 5:30 a.m. every day from sunday to thursday as they

work to get rid of existing hov lanes, turn them into express lanes and construct new express lanes on this 22-mile stretch of road here along highway 101. we have a map to give you a better look how this could affect your morning commute. existing car-pool lanes converted to express lanes between the san mateo/santa clara line and whipple avenue where they will be building new express lanes from whipple ave to 380 south in south san francisco. the work will be done in both directions northbound and southbound. the express lanes will allow buses and car-pool lanes. other drivers can play with fastrak. cal trans tells us as the work is set to start tonight they're doing this in a man earp they should have everything wrapped up by 5:30 in the morning so it won't have a great impact on

hayward and concord, look at the 60s, the marino, bellevue, crissy field. our average high for today is 60 and we're there now. petaluma 39, the coolest, union city at 60. pittsburg and pleasanton 54. san mateo side is 45. there's about an 11-degree drop across that. the breezeness our hills the only issue. mid to upper 60s from noon all the way through 6:00. east bay valleys we'll hit the 70s after starting off in the 50s. the last stop will be the south bay where we'll have temperatures through 9:00. wouldn't be surprised if some neighborhoods hit 70 here also.
