debate on friday. the big x factor, half of new hampshire voters say they have definitely made up their minds. >> yeah, independents can vote in the new hampshire primary. that always changes things up as well. thanks to new hampshire tradition the first results in the primary already in from the midnight votes in tiny dixville notch already a surprise, michael bloomberg who isn't even on the ballot won three of the five votes in that town. two democrats, one republican, amy klobuchar winning in some other small towns up north and our team is spread out across the granite state. mary bruce starts us off in new hampshire. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, the first in the nation primary is now under way. voting has begun at this polling station behind me and, in fact, we're waiting for pete buttigieg to appear and the candidates out making one final pitch. hoping to different a win, bernie sanders with a rock concert valli before an energized crown crowd. >> let us go forward.

super critical tuesday early states voting next month and may be working. >> so far it does appear to be working for michael bloomberg and, mary, we have an odd twist right now in new hampshire. the votes in iowa still haven't been officially counted. no final results there in iowa yet, but they don't expect any problems there in new hampshire. >> reporter: no, officials are comfortable they can avoid the turmoil. it is a different system. voters are casting them on ballot. familiar system with no new apps so confident they can prevent any kinds of technical breakdowns. >> thanks very much. let's bring in jon karl in manchester. president trump was in iowa before the caucuses, new

hampshire last night. >> reporter: he likes to take away some of the spotlight from the democrats and in the case of new hampshire, george, this is a state that they think he can win. he lost two years ago by 2,327 votes, the nearest margin. >> reporter: the new hampshire primary usually windows out candidates and gets those who have to drop out of the race. all top five say they'll go on no matter what. mike bloomberg hanging out for super tuesday and does increase the chances that will not be a nominee by the convention in july. >> reporter: it does. look, bernie sanders comes in the leading candidate. if he wins here he's the clear frontrunner for the democratic nomination. george, that has a lot of democrats, establishment democrats, moderate democrats in a state of panic. unclear who is the alternative is. those votes don't go to bernie sanders but don't go to any one candidate you see bloomberg at 15% and could have three or four other candidates coming out of new hampshire. >> it's muddled.

jon, thanks very much. we'll have live coverage of the new hampshire primary as the results come in. i'll anchor joined by our team on abc and abc news live. michael? thank you, george. to the massive storm. pounding the east coast with rain and threatening parts of the south with severe flooding and tornadoes. ginger is tracking it all and joins us with the timing of this storm. how are you doing? >> it is wet out in new york city and raining all the way back to east texas. it's very slow moving and you're looking at birmingham, alabama, pictures of the flash google, up to a half foot of rain there. people stranded in their cars. that was tuscaloosa. we have video their from where they're trying to plow throw. don't do that. there are a lot of places almost 200% their normal to date this year and been so, so wet. so the flood watches are on from tennessee back through mississippi, alabama and watch that low. it's not just tonight and tomorrow but it is the damaging

storms possible on wednesday from east texas through arkansas all the way to the snow, st. louis into the northeast, cecelia. we'll track it all the way through thursday. >> thanks, ginger. we turn to the coronavirus outbreak. a new case confirmed right here in the u.s. one of the americans evacuated from wuhan coming down with the virus in san diego. this as the number of cases worldwide now tops 42,000 and the number of deaths is over 1,000. maggie rulli joins us from japan where that quarantined cruise ship is still docked this morning. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: good morning. the u.s. embassy has promised to do everything they can for all the persons on board that ship. we know a specialist is on the ground in japan to help. this morning, san diego is the site of the 13th confirmed case of the novel coronavirus in the u.s. after an adult has tested positive while undergoing further testing.

this as tensions rise in japan. at least 135 confirmed cases of the virus on that quarantine cruise ship. >> guests in inside cabins without windows and fresh air, must spend more time-out side. >> reporter: passengers say the crew is taking extra precautions. >> yesterday they brought us new masks. they're a little thicker. they want us to use these when we open the door to get more food or anything. >> reporter: princess cruises in a statement saying any individual who has traveled from or through mainland china, macau or hong kong within 14 days will not be allowed to board the ship. the virus has sickened more than

3,000 people. hong kong evacuating 100 people from an apartment plex after two people who were separated by ten floors tested positive. authorities suspect a bathroom renovation caused air to escape through a pipe. meanwhile chilling images coming out of chinese social media. teams of people in hazmat suits dragging a panicked family from their apartment after they reported to self-quarantine. this self-described citizen journalist defined the chinese government to report on the shortage of masks and protective clothing hasn't been seen or heard from for days. he expressed anxiety. this as the chinese president made a rare appearance in a surgical mask during a public appearance at a city hospital in

beijing. but as the virus spreads, the search is on for a super spreader. a businessman from england who traveled to singapore and france, his local public believed to have passed it to search different people linked to cases in three country, on average medical experts think someone with this new coronavirus gives it to two or three people but a superspreader can give it to two to three times that amount. that's why medical experts are so concerned about them. they have a massive impact on this outbreak. >> thank you, maggie. let's bring in dr. jennifer ashton. you heard maggie mention it might be spreading through buildings and pipes and this seems to be raising new concerns about how it spreads. >> if that were true of course it would be concerning. the key thing as much as everyone wants to get out there with facts we are don't know and

we're not comfortable in our society, just like we're not comfortable in medicine and science, saying we don't know, but that's the honest answer. so rather than spread fear, you know, theories or things that we can't confirm, right now we have to say, okay, true, true and maybe related, maybe unrelated. >> quarantining has been a big part of all of this. what other potential risks and benefits? >> when we see governments take preemptive states like quarantine, travel evacuations, we have to be clear that is to safeguard public health. it can be incredibly important. it's one of the key steps in managing an outbreak that they go identify, isolate, then diagnose and treat. and while absolutely it's not pleasant and the downsides would be stress and upset and in the case of one of those ships, you know, the crew being very closely confined. different than the passengers. there are some risks that we need to evaluate. on whole their benefits outweigh the risks. >> president trump had a lot of

people scratching their heads saying warm weather will kill the virus. >> yeah, we don't know. mers spread from the arabian peninsula at 110 degrees. we don't know yet. we have to be able to say what we know and what we don't know. there is no evidence of that yet. >> so much we do not know, jen ashton, thanks very much. there is a new development on that iranian missile strike against u.s. forces in iraq. the pentagon has raised the number of americans injured again now saying that 109 troops have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries from the early january attack, the fifth time that number has been revised up. right after the incident president trump said no americans had been harmed and downplayed the injuries as headaches. 76 of the service members have returned to active duty in iraq. michael? now to that alarming new report, the justice department is blaming china for that massive equifax hack in 2017 that affected more than 145 million americans. pierre thomas is in washington with the story. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning, the fbi claims this is an epic battle to determine who will be the dominant economic

superpower in the 21st century. authorities are pointing the fijfi finger at china for launching perhaps the biggest hack on americans ever. this morning, the justice department has indicted these four members of the chinese people's liberation army accusing them of being responsible for the hack that impacted 145 million americans. nearly half of the u.s. population. the alleged target, equifax, one of the country's biggest credit reporting companies all part of that 2017 massive breach where hackers stole social security number, dates of birth and addresses. >> for years we have witnessed china's voracious appetite for the personal data of americans. >> reporter: this morning we're also learning the hackers got access to the driver's license numbers of 10 million more americans. and authorities say such a large breach could allow chinese intelligence to use the stolen information to lock in on specific u.s. government officials as espionage targets. the stolen information may tell chinese intelligence which u.s.

this morning, new images of the mother of two missing idaho siblings with her new husband in hawaii. the couple lori vallow and chad daybell seen going to church sunday refusing to answer questions about the children who haven't been seen since september. these exclusive wedding photos taken a month after her children were last seen were obtained by abc news. they show the happy looking couple in early november in hawaii. chad playing the ukulele while lori dances on the beach, happening four months after her former husband was shot and killed by her brother and now weeks after daybell's wife died. police now investigating her death and the disappearance of 17-year-old tylee ryan and her 7-year-old brother j.j. deepens. a friend of tylee's tells abc news she texted the teen's phone in october a month after she vanished and received this back, hi, miss you guys too. luv ya.

it's been two weeks since she missed a court ordered deadline to produce her missing children. >> can you tell me where your kids are? >> reporter: east idaho news capturing the moment police cracked down on vallow and her new husband down in hawaii in june to serve that court order. >> where are your kids? >> no comment. >> no comment? they've been missing four months. you have nothing today? >> reporter: daybell has give everybody written religious books. i sat down with j.j.'s grandparents saying she changed over the last year. >> i can't say exactly when chad came into the picture because i don't know. i knew lori was reading books. >> books about the end of the world. >> about doomsday stuff and i knew she was in a group. >> reporter: now chad vallow married lori just three weeks after the death of his wife tammy and authorities are still waiting for results of her autopsy. her body was exhumed on december 11th. if there was foul play involved in tammy's death the autopsy

will most likely find it. but j.j.'s grandparents say every single day they are fighting to find out what happened to those children. >> every day counts. thank you, amy. joining us is callahan walsh of the national center for missing & exploited children, callahan, thank you so much for joining us. and we're going to start off, with your experience in missing children's case what is are authorities doing right now to locate the missing kids? >> well, this case is very complicated. there's a lot to unpack here. there are three suspicious deaths surround this case and these children haven't been seen for five months. law enforcement is going to relook at those suspicious deaths and also rely on the public. anybody that has any information about the whereabouts of these children i know law enforcement is looking for those keys and clues. >> callahan, mom did not meet the court-ordered deadline to produce these children. so what can authorities do now? what are their next steps?

>> well, it's up to the court to draw up charges to hold lori in contempt of court. if they do that that's when law enforcement can really dig in. just because no one has seen these two children in five months is not necessarily a crime. however, not producing them at court after the court order is. if they hold her in contempt, then they can really start to dig in. >> have you seen another case where she said she gave her kids to someone else and refuses to cooperate with police? >> we have seen it before, unfortunately. however majority of the time the reality is a much darker thing to deal with and i hope my worst suspicions don't come true. we want to see these children recovered alive. thank god for their extended family who is putting the pressure on lori and chad to produce the children, law enforcement and the media who

are really staying on top of this case. but i really just hope these children are recovered alive and reunited with their family. >> one more question, how important is it to have the daughter's cell phone? >> well, it's absolutely tantamount. that's a huge piece of evidence especially since supposed text messages were sent on behalf of the daughter. she's 17 years old. which 17-year-old doesn't have their cell phone with them 24/7? the fact she didn't have it with them and the venmo app was used as well does not bode well. finding out that the mother's had it in her possession the whole time does not look good in this case. >> callahan walsh, thank you so much for joins us. george? >> thank you, michael. we're going to get to the latest in the college admissions scandal and the harshest punishment handed down yet, douglas hodges pleaded guilty to paying nearly a million dollars to get four of his children into georgetown apologizing and explaining himself for the first time and paula faris has the

details. good morning, paula. >> good morning, george. he is taking full responsibility for his actions. for over a decade he paid close to $900,000 in bribes to get four of his children into elite schools and it's because of that long involvement he was delivered the harshest sentence yet. this morning, another parent in the "varsity blues" saga receiving their punishment. this time the largest punishment yet. doug hodge, former ceo of a global investment firm had father of seven was leveled with a nine-month prison sentence after pleading guilty for paying nearly 4900,000 to get four of his children into elite colleges under false pretenses. >> getting into the right college will set the trajectory for the rest of your son or daughter's life. >> reporter: hodge is now telling his side of the story in a first person op-ed written for "the wall street journal" titled "i wish i never met rick

singer." he writes, i unfortunately made payments that facilitated his scheme believing i was supporting the university while also helping my children. but i knew mr. singer was providing my children with a false athletic brand. i believe that mr. singer was directing my payments to underfunded athletic programs but inch i have now learned that a large chunk of my payments ended up nsyin singer's persona bank accounts. hodge is 1 of 36 parents embroil in the scandal including lori loughlin who along with her husband maintain their innocence accused of paying rick singer half a milling to get their daughters into usc claiming they were elite rowers and pleaded not guilty. >> if you would say england is my city, i would say why did i pay all this money for your education. >> reporter: prosecutors continue to push their case and they filed a resume in a filing

"gma" taking a look with our own experiment searching on orbitz, booking.com and priceline. with two interns simultaneously trying to book hotels in the same cities for the same dates. one searching for one room. the other for two rooms at the same hotel and compare findings side by side. so we're on orbitz, and we're checking denver properties right now. for both of our searches on orbitz and booking.com we did not find differences in room availability, but when we check

priceline's listings for hotels in denver the one room left alert pops up for our intern isabella, and two rooms left for intern kate at the same hotel, same price. >> you've got two rooms left here and one room left here. so which is it? >> reporter: and while searching new orleans -- this one says one room left, this one says two rooms left. when we check hotels in miami, only one here but only three rooms left over here. and the rooms are the same price, $143 a night. checkbook finding similar results. >> priceline was the leader in terms of warning about low availability. >> reporter: regarding the one-room left pop-ups, priceline said that language refers to a specific room at a specific price, not the entire hotel. the language is accurate and changes by the minute depending on availability. >> often they're cherrypicking and pointing you toward a room type that has low availability, and there's only one left of that room type, but there are plenty of other rooms, some of

[ applause ] just ended a six-year run so what made you jump into this new project? >> well, this project was like it blew me away when i actually -- i met isaac wright jr. loosely based on him and had been sentenced to 70 years plus life, the first person convicted under the kingpin statue in the state of new jersey, wrongfully convicted and represented himself because he couldn't find an attorney to look at the case and ended up serving about 7 1/2 years while studying law and becoming a prison rep and representing a lot of inmates to allow him to come back on this appeal and actually got himself out of jail and i was like, i was googling it at the same time i was talking to him because i couldn't believe it was true. it's not like one in a million. it's like only one and i'm like, this guy belongs on television, not just because about we made a

feature film because initially it was to create a feature film but only two hours to tell the story and it just -- requires more time to explain that journey and with prison reform and the innocence project and even kim kardashian is with -- working on getting inmates out of jail. [ applause ] >> absolutely. so needs to be told. we got a clip. about your character talking about legal strategy. let's watch. >> i got no choice but to provoke them hoping he gets reckless and makes a mistake. >> that's your long game. >> i don't see any other way. >> how about win your cases and get yourself some credibility. >> i'll stay away from the press. but you let me worry about my credibility. >> and you got to meet the person who this is based off of so how was that for you? >> isaac is an incredible man. i mean when we first had the table read for the first episode i took him into a room for 45 minutes and just talked and talked. he was very gracious. he opened up, you know, talking about things that any question i had for him he answered it and it was just a really great way of getting an essence of who he was so i could introduce that to the show. >> he changed his whole character. he had a plan and then he just went and changed the whole performance. >> i love what you both said how you've given so much to this and now it belongs to the audience. we are very excited. we have a new book hitting selves today, "the queen's fortune." i never heard the story before but she is a real powerhouse. >> the best stories buried in history if you only go back and look at the woman's story never told at the time. this is about desiree clary. her only sort of initial claim to fame she was napoleon's first love. everybody knows about napoleon. he went on to become emperor of france and had this dramatic life obviously but her story really only begins from the point that he left her. she went on to not only reign and found this dynasty still rules to this day but lead this incredible life that has been largely lost to history which has been written, you know, with -- >> she became queen of sweden and her family is still -- >> desiree outlasted napoleon and all the men fighting each other and overpowering her legacy. but she went on to found the

dynasty that the swedish royal family still is on the throne and the next queen of sweden, her middle name is desiree in honor of this founding matriarch. strong women with great stories and love stories that still lives to the day. >> this is a comeback for you. picked up historical fiction after having a different writing career when you found out your husband just 30 years old had a stroke. >> yeah, yeah, so my husband and i obviously never expected him to have this near fatal experience and i was working as a writer at the time of historical fiction and loved doing that. but for the year following his stroke and then his recovery -- >> he's fine now. >> he's home watching with my daughters right now. he's amazing. but for the year really how we healed and processed because he was in a state of complete amnesia and at 30 lost the life we had and so to help him come out of that and remember but also as my way as a writer to heal and process, i wrote my way through that and it was never a book i intended to write but

ended up being this important part of your jurnee now so with "the queen's fortune" i'm returning to what i love which is telling these great women's stories from history and writing these really juicy dramatic stories that can transport readers hopefully to this other time. >> ado you hope your daughters take away from them? >> i want them to know that there are these powerful women whose stories -- whose voices have been largely overshadowed. go back and tell from their perspective, there is heart, relationship, power that makes for really great stories and also for my daughters to know history is not boring. there is all the raw material for the best dramatic stories and that's why i love historical fiction because while you might not pick up a dry biography but historical fiction you get inspired. >> it was your dad who turned you on to it. >> we're big history dorks in our family. always a priority and something that's been important to us so he said what do you know about this woman desiree clary,
