several mice and one even jumped at a student. >> it's creepy. luz pena spoke with a school grikt what is being done to fix the problem at madison park academy in a story you'll see only abc7 news. >> reporter: for the past several weeks, the talk in the hall ways has been about roadways. some even have pictures to prove it. >> i also hear other students say, i've seen a rat. i've seen a rat. it's not a small rat. it's a rat, rat. >> reporter: after seeing four to five mice outside her classroom, she had a close encounter with one. >> i was looking for a cart with soccer balls and then i is a you a rat jump out at me of the. >> reporter: the school district says they've known with this issue for weeks and the main building is safe but they've identified three problematic areas. >> across the field from here is a creek. we believe a lot of animals are coming from that area.

what they say a culture of rape on campus. >> they walked through all three stories of the district offices. at one point, they sat down in the hallway. >> reporter: the summit invited them into school board chambers where several hundred vented their frustration. >> we are here because we feel unsafe. we feel unheard. and we are scared. we are all in the hall ways trying to survive. a girl got pulled into a classroom and raped for god's sakes. >> reporter: that reported incident dates back to last may and last week, one female student sued the district over how they handled her attempted rape case. others say they resorted to writing names on bathroom stalls of male students they feared. >> noticed idea that all of my teachers were mandated reporters. know we have resources but we need to make the resources known so when kids need help, they can go to someone. >> some kid in elementary school

board of supervisors two years ago, we had a backlog of 260 kits had had not been tested. today backlog is zero. >> reporter: what was and still an issue for cities and counties all across the county, finally seeing major results in santa clara county. today the district attorney announcing an end to the backlog of rape kits. >> they found a high number of them were serial rapists but there were also people committing multiple other times of crimes. >> reporter: what once took up to three months to process a dna evidence sample taken from a rape victim now takes less than 30 days. >> the average process time has decreased from 94 days. >> reporter: in the case where the person is a stranger, it can be 5 to 17 days.
