empty it is. great time to head out the door there. a look at our map, the only slowdown is out of tracy. >> we're starting with breaking news from southern california. look at this? firefighters are pouring water on a huge fire that erupted at an apartment building in tustin, orange county. this live picture shows us what's happening. they have this thing surrounded but this will be a real bear to put out. the fire started around 3:30 this morning. it's not immediately known if anyone got hurt or just how this fire started. we'll monitor what's happening there and bring you updates. that looks like a big complex. hopefully everyone is okay. back at home, all he was try doing was clean his car, in an instant a couple of men were holding an oakland resident at gun point. >> look at this video. it's very clear. you can see what's happening. it is making a lot of us especially this man's neighbors lived. amy hollyfield is joining us live from the newsroom with more

on this. amy? >> this is scary. we talked to the victim. he said the thieves stole his phone, his gold necklace and his bracelet, worth about $5,000. look at this video again. he's attacked in the middle of the day in front of his own home. two men grab him and then put a gun to the back of his head. the suspects force him to the ground, pat down his body and then they run away. actually they walked away. it was 1:30 monday afternoon. the victim was just cleaning out his car in his own driveway. he did not want to talk on camera. he is scared. neighbors say they're glad it was captured on camera and they're hoping the cameras will prevent future crimes. >> this is the worst thing that's happened probably in ten years. hopefully it will work for deterrent value first and foremost. should there be a problem, they'll have a record of it. >> it was his cameras that caught what neighbors believe is the thieves white sedan.

this happened in the diamond neighborhood. no one was hurt, just shaken up. police are investigating. no arrests have been made. live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. i'm tracking the primary election at the live desk. it is official. senator bernie sanders has won the new hampshire primary with 26% of the votes. he narrowly beat former pete buttigieg who got 24%. during his victory speech, senator sanders said this is the beginning of the end for president trump. >> our campaign is not just about beating trump, it is about transforming this country. >> senator amy klobuchar rounded out the top three candidates. elizabeth warren, joe biden and tom steyer finished in the single digits. it's important to keep in mind that the primary race is about winning delegates not just the popular vote. senator sanders got more votes

than iowa and new hampshire, pete buttigieg has two more delegates than senator sanders. that means the democratic field is getting smaller. two candidates just dropped out of the race including michael bennett and businessman andrew yang. >> you know i am the math guy, and it is clear tonight from the numbers that we are not going to win this race. my goal, when i first started running was to solve the problems that got donald trump elected. in order to do that, i will support whoever is the democratic nominee. >> as of this moment, nine candidates are still in the running for the democratic presidential nomination. the. four federal prosecutors removed themselves from the criminal case involving trump's long-time ally roger stone after the justice department stepped in and decided to lower the sentence that prosecutors recommended for stone. andrew dymburt has more.

>> reporter: the department of justice saying it would overrule the prosecution recommendation of a 7 to 9-year prison sentence for roger stone, as a result four prosecutors quit the case in protest. a stunning reversal in the sentencing recommendation for president trump's longtime confidant roger stone. at least four prosecutors stepping down from stone's case after a dramatic decision to overrule their recommendation he spend seven to nine years in prison. >> for the attorney general to step in in this way at this point is practically unheard of. >> reporter: the stunning rebuke from the justice department leadership came just hours after the president tweeted that the prosecutor's suggested sentence for stone was horrible and very unfair. a miscarriage of justice. prosecutors had originally recommended a lengthy sentence arguing stone tampered with a witness for months but a justice department spokesman later

called their recommendation extreme and excessive and maintains the decision to reverse the recommendation came before the president's tweet. >> this department -- >> i'd be able to do it if i wanted. >> reporter: senate minority leader chuck schumer writing a letter to the inspector general requesting an investigation. and the president was also critical of the judge presiding in this case. a lab in richmond is set to start their own coronavirus testing starting today. up until now everybody getting tested would have to have the results going to the cdc in atlanta. that process took up to a week. the cdc sent kits to 16 labs nationwide to speed up testing. the one in richmond is actually the viral disease laboratory. the cdc has confirmed 13 cases of coronavirus here in the u.s. we're getting an inside look at the living situation for people quarantined at travis air force base.

jesussie smollett. >> he is the actor accused of making up a racially motivated attack in chicago over a year ago. >> reporter: in this morning's "gma" first look, indicted. actor jussie smollett facing a new set of criminal charges nearly a year after prosecutors dropped similar charges against him for allegedly staging a racist and homophobic attack. he was indicted on six counts of disorderly conduct, related to making false statements about last year's attack. dan webb appointed to review the case after kim fox abruptly dropped the charges against smollett in march of last year. fox, who is up for re-election, telling me back then -- >> our office handles cases like this, class four felonies, disorderly conducts, many of them with similar outcomes. >> we'll have the latest on

jussie smollett coming up at 7:00 a.m. employees at tartin bakery may vote to unionize as early as next month. nearly 200 people work. there the examiner reports about 146 workers signed cards in favor of organizing under the international long shore and warehouse union. tartin sent a letter to employees on monday saying it would not recognize the cards, that triggered union leaders to request federal officials set up an election. a candy store in san francisco's west portal neighborhood is closing after nearly nine decades in business. shaws has a for rent sign in the window and almost everything inside is gone. the store was known for a wide variety of gourmet chocolates, popcorn, caramel corn and cotton candy. the highlight was the pez dispenser display in the front window. that's gone, too. >> i hate to see that. >> me, too. i wish it could stay for

valentine's day. >> or maybe forever. i guess things change. >> yes. maybe one way to eat healthier is to follow more people living healthy lifestyles on instagram and facebook. >> maybe. a new study looked into the impact social media has on our eating habits. researchers in the uk surveyed nearly 400 college students about their diets. they also asked participants to guess friends diets based on what they posted online. participants ate slightly more fruits and vegetables than what they thought their friends ate and the same thing happens with junk food. the study found that facebook users consumed an extra portion of unhealthy snacks if they thought their friends also indulge. if you get this, this will be a healthier way for you to have a healthier eating plan, praise. >> i don't know, friend. >> just based on what you're seeing -- it means we're too

will be a slowdown. ferries are running on time. no delays on the winter schedule. b.a.r.t. has 23 trains running all on time. live look at walnut creek, 680, looking good over there. moving smoothly. no issues on the roadway. the golden gate bridge, nice and clear this wednesday morning. thank you. san jose will spend more money to reduce the number of deadly traffic crashes on city streets. 60 people died in crashes in san jose last year. that matched a 25-year high. last year's victim included 29 pedestrians. last night, san jose city council voted to pump nearly $7 million in their vision zero campaign. the "mercury news" reports that some of that money will go towards urging drivers to obey the speed limit. san francisco's embarcadero could lose a car lane in an effort to improve bike safety along the waterfront. port authority leaders are looking to create a protected passageway for cyclists and scooter riders. it would be between oracle park

has collapsed. crews are still trying to make sure everyone who is inside that building is accounted for. as you can see, it's very much still on fire. 60 to 100 units were affected by this fire, which is now a five alarm fire. >> wow. 120 firefighters are now at the scene. crews are using a drone to help assess the fire situation but the good news is that all the firefighters are accounted for. there are no injuries reported. we are continuing to monitor this situation. we'll bring you the latest updates on abc7news.com and ond abc7 news. we'll tell you what's happening now with the election. senator bernie sanders has pulled off a narrow victory in the nation's first primary. >> he got 26% of the vote last night in new hampshire. pete buttigieg got a little more than 24%. the surprise of the night was amy klobuchar who came in third with 20%. elizabeth warren was falling

said shouldn't be here at all has shown that we are here to stay. >> reporter: rounding out the top tier, senator amy klobuchar riding a late wave of support from her most recent abc debate performance, pushing a message of unity and sensibility. >> donald trump's worst nightmare is that the people in the middle, the people who have had enough of the name-calling and the mud-slinging have someone to vote for in november. >> reporter: for several candidates the night was underwhelming at best. andrew yang and senator michael bennet have now dropped out while senator elizabeth warren and former vice president joe biden once front-runners nationally both finished with single digit support. still, they're vowing to fight on. >> where i come from that's the opening bell. not the closing bell. >> reporter: and, remember, the state votes are about more than seeing who wins, they're about gathering delegates for the nomination. the math behind that can be odd.

bernie sanders got the most votes in new hampshire and iowa, yet still mayor pete buttigieg earned two more delegates than sanders has so far. it could be the makings of a two-candidate horse race moving forward. trevor ault, abc news. >> thank you. at its peak there were 29 mjor candidates running for the democratic presidential nomination. that is the highest number we've seen. only these nine candidates remain. for now. so far biden, buttigieg, klobuchar, sanders and warren have qualified for next wednesday's debate, that is in las vegas. in new developments in the coronavirus health crisis the number of dead jumped to 1,015 worldwide.

>> the number of coronavirus patients in the u.s. is 13. the house committee will hold a hearing today on the outbreak. >> the deadly outbreak is now known as covid-19 by the world health organization. it's short for coronavirus disease 2019. 39 more cases are reported on a cruise ship near yokohama, japan. that brings the total to 174. at least 23 americans have become ill. the u.s. postal service says it is having trouble sending letters and packages to china because most airlines suspended flights to the country. a palo alto woman quarantined after fears of contracting the virus will be reunited with her kids. >> she spent the last two weeks with her daughter at march air force base in southern california. julian glover is live in sunnyvale where they'll officially reconnect. julian? >> it's a reunion six weeks in the making after fears of them catching the coronavirus after traveling to wuhan, china.

now the mother and her daughter will be reunited with family as they are released from quarantine today. this picture has been shared all over the internet. nearly 200 quarantined individuals who threw their masks in the air after they were cleared yesterday. esther's husband picked up her and her daughter yesterday from the base. the tebeka's other two children, 11 and 13, they have been staying with a family friend in san jose for several weeks as mom and daughter waited in quarantine, now they just can't wait to be reunited. >> tonight is the night where i'm going to cry out of joy. >> right here. very happy to see him of course. hello. >> again, the big reunion will be today when esther picks up the kids from school.
