two chartered flights back to the u.s. as early as this sunday. >> "the wll street journal" reports they will be flown to travis air force base in fairfield in the bay area and then to san antonio. a new minutes ago we spoke with a nevada resident aboard the ship eager to be heading home soon. >> i find there that there are literally no negatives. we've heard a couple of myths that there might be an extension of a day or two, and we're hopeful that that doesn't occur. >> peter saver said he and his wife are in good health and have not tested positive for coronavirus. the ship was put under a two-week quarantine on february 5th. >> the number of confirmed covid-19 cases has jumped to 218. >> the last direct flight for weeks is leaving right now from sfo. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez is live at the airport,

and has been talking with passengers. lauren? >> reporter: dan and ama, you know, passengers, especially bay area residents, tell me they feel lucky they were able on a direct flight just in time. >> i'm happy to come back home. >> reporter: tina arrived on china's southern airlines final direct flight from -- it took passengers two hours to get to customs. >> they took our temperature, but there's a long line. >> china southern had two final flights, one arriving at sfo just before 6:00 p.m. and the final direct flight from sfo to china, departing around 10:40 p.m., the last flight for the next six weeks. on their instagram page, they posted this photo with the caption cleaning and disinfecting the -- a passenger reportedly was taken off the

plane separately. then the staff deep cleaned the plane for the flight back to sfo. >> they just mentioned it was due to a sick passenger or something on the plane so they wanted to clean it. >> passengers say the flight was delayed for hours. >> luckily enough my wife sent me with a bunch of wipes so i wiped down my seat, everything around me. >> and some passengers never boarded. >> a couple of passengers decided to reroute themselves through chicago or l.a. but some did. >> for bay area residents arriving on the final direct flight from china for weeks they feel fortunate. >> i feel lucky. >> now, bay area residents can still get to china. requiring a connecting flight at a different airport. now, china's southern airlines will resume services at the end of march. while the final flight is taking off tonight, so are relief efforts centered around silicon valley, let's go to my colleague

amanda dell castillo for that. >> lauren, this is a long distance relief effort started right here in silicon valley. the man behind wuhan united lives in san jose. he was born and raised in wuhan, china. masks, gloves and isolation gowns, 1 million pieces of personal protective equipment has been delivered. a team of volunteers jumpered into action when the virus shut down wuhan. >> that virus -- before the hospital declared sos to the society. they ran out of stock. there's nothing. so it's very -- >> gone, clearly hurting for his hometown, he was born and raised in wuhan, and went to college there. he recently banded together with other grand watts of wuhan based universitys, also living in the bay area to help. they make up the new non profit
