death is confirmed in europe overnight. good morning, it's saturday, february 15th. i'm kate larson. we have more on the coronavirus outbreak in a minute but first a quick look at weather with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. good morning, kate. it's a dry start. we do have patchy fog in the north bay. also along on the coast. three-mile visibility. looking at the east bay this morning numbers in the 40s. 43 in hayward. 46 in union city. with the cool 35 and fog in santa rosa. 48 with fog in and around the shoreline. throughout the day today, starting out with fog and then 60s arrive with a few high clouds. noontime, 4:00 increasing clouds, a weak front from the north will bring in clouds to the north bay and looking at that sun setting at 5:48. see the clouds there. a cold front will it bring rain? not likely but we are talking wind and that could last through the holiday. details coming up, kate. >> thank you, lisa.

new overnight, the coronavirus reaches now corners of the globe. france reporting the first death of a patient in europe. officials say it's an 80-year-old man visiting france from the wuhan area. and now four people outside mainland china have been killed b the virus. more than 1,500 people total. just yesterday china recorded more than 1,000 new confirmed cases, bringing the global total to more than 66,000. in the u.s. there are 15 confirmed cases, eight of those are here in california. it comes after new developments aboard the quarantined diamond princess cruise ship. u.s. officials say the american passengers will be evacuated and fly home from japan tomorrow night. the cruise ship was put under a two-week quarantine on february 5th after a reported outbreak. the u.s. embassy in japan says the 380 americans will fly to travis air base in fairfield before heading to lackland in san antonio. now last night we spoke on the phone to a novato resident

aboard the ship who is very eager to head home. >> i find that there are literally no negatives. and it's one hell of a story we'll have when we get back. we have actually heard a couple of myths that there might be an extension of a day or two. we're hopeful that that doesn't occur. >> now we hope they get home safe. there have been 218 confirmed coronavirus cases onboard the ship since the quarantine began peter saber said he and his wife are in good health and not tested positive. in a letter to the passengers and crew onboard the diamond princess, the u.s. embassy in japan says in part quote we recognize this has been a stressful experience and we remain dedicated to providing auto the support we can and see you safely and expeditiously reunited with family and friends in the united states. all right. we're giving you a live look from sfo this morning. here in the bay area we're traveling from san francisco to china china just got a lot

tougher. the last direct flight for weeks just left. abc 7 news reporter lauren martin easy spoke with passengers relieved to have gotten final seats. >> i'm happy to head back home. >> reporter: tina chang arrived on southern china airlines guardian guangzhou, china to sfo friday evening. taking passengers at least two hours to get through customs. >> they took our temperature so we get out. but that's a long line. >> reporter: china southern had two final flights. one arriving at sfo just before 6:00 p.m. and the final direct flight from sfo to china departing around 10:40 p.m. the last night the next six weeks. on the instagram page they posted this photo, cleaning and disinfecting the aircraft. earlier on on friday a passenger landed in heath roe london with symptoms. taken off the plane separately. then the staff deep-cleaned the

plane for the flight back to the sfo. >> they mentioned it was due to a sick passenger or something on the plaep. so they wanted to clean it. >> reporter: passengers say the flight was delayed for hours. >> luckily enough my wife sent me with a bunch of wipes. i wiped down my seat, everything around me. >> reporter: and some passengers never boarded. >> a couple of passengers decided to reroute themselves through chicago or l.a. but some did. >> reporter: for bay area residents rafrg on the final direct flight from china for weeks feel fortunate. >> i feel lucky. >> reporter: lauren martin easy, abc 7. we're told china southern airlines will resume service at the end of next month. while the final flight is taking off so a are relief efforts in silicon valley. a long distance relief effort is head bid a bare resident born and raised in wuhan. amanda del castillo is in san jose with how people there are

picture probably what you want to know about the rain. and it has been in the pacific northwest. . and we have a system coming from the north but just like the past few systems any will just bring some clouds. set up on the eastern side of the bay area. and that will bring in some wind as we'll get a wit of a funneling effective, the highest winds north and east bay hills not like last weekend. it's 47 in oakland. foerng good morning to you. 43 in hayward. 35 in santa rosa. mid-40s in san jose. certainly cold where the fog is. you can see 3/4 mile visibility there. with a quarter mile in petaluma. elsewhere okay around the bay. as we look riff outside from the exploratorium camera you'll notice that we are looking at clouds out there. mild and see the breezy winds set up tomorrow later on. and that will bring some cooler weather. westernly winds to start and switch around to northwest winds and gusty in the hills up to 40 miles an hour for the holiday on

monday. we shouldn't see much of that wind mix to the surface. maybe 25 miles an hour gusts at the coast. otherwise spring-like weather returns next week with temperatures in areas in the 70s again. here is tomorrow with mid-60s around the bay. cooler in san francisco. but as we get into monday it's an offshore wind. we dry out the atmosphere, warm up into the 70s in the inland valleys. but behind the system we'll get school overnight lows. because the air dries out and the overnight lows will drop off quickly. rebounding though into the mid-60s on tuesday. where is the rain? the last soaking rain was january 16th, about a month ago. the first two weeks of february, of course have been dry. getting into the last two weeks, the third week looks to be dry, maybe signs of change for the last week. as we go to the next ten days including next weekend, notice the bay area just 0.01. rain scant up in the pacific northwest. i should say northern california

with only 0.07. much of the state looking into a drought. half of the state looking like they are in drought and we'll watch that as many indications for rainfall and whether or not our reservoirs are full, that determines the drought factor. not looking good though. 63 in oakland opinion 67 in concord. 65 in napa. upper 60s in the north bay. mild there with 67 over into the east bay. and 67 about in the santa clara region. the accuweather seven-day forecast, upper 50s at the coast, remaining cool there. mid-60s around the bay. looking for fog burning back by the time the sun comes up before 7:00. not much of of an issue. then into sunday we have the front. cooler and breezier. upper elevations, gusty winds take us to monday. the holiday, president's day and the dry err air bringing a cold start to tuesday and wednesday. but afternoons are mild. in fact so mild we'll be back to the 70s thursday and friday.

arrival of american passengers trapped and quarantined on a cruise ship in japan. let set to leave for the u.s. this weekend. here are the latest numbers. the virus killed more than 1,500 people, including four people outside of mainland china. the latest coming overnight is the first confirmed death of a patient in europe. just yesterday china recorded more than 1,000 new confirmed cases writing bringing the global total to more than 66,000. in the u.s. there are 15 confirmed cases, eight of those in california. new developments, the u.s. plans to evacuate 3807 quarantined americans aboard the diamond princess cruise ship and fly them home tomorrow night. anyone who tested positive for coronavirus or showing symptoms can't leave and will have to continue receiving treatment in japan. in an email to passengers, the u.s. embassy said that people who choose to return on the charter aircraft will still have to undergo 14 days of quarantine

but you're probably wondering about the rain where has it been? will we see any? we have had weak system grazing parts of the north bay. and we sit well below where we should for mid-february. only 66% of normal in santa rosa. 57% of normal san francisco. and we go down the line 41% of average for san jose. it has been almost the driest february we have seen since we kept records. but 1864, no rain fell at all for the month of february. and we could tie that record, although it's looking likely the third week of february we could see a pattern change. that's coming up. actually by the end of the third week. so we'll see -- it's not a lot of rain. it won't help us out in the deficit department. but it's something. and as we look at the golden gate bridge you can see a little bit of fog there. a dryer condition arriving on the heels of the gusty offshore winds for late sunday into the holiday. president's day on monday. it's all due to a weak weather

system to the north that's sliding down to the east of us, and that has been the setup when they setup east we get the offshore flow. the wind flow from higher pressure to lower pressure. and the severe always trying to equalize, balance out and that's why we get the wind backup looking live outside from the east bay hills camera you notice it's clear. looking at temperatures from the upper 40s. redwood city and gilroy 46 on the coast with a little bit of fog and another vantage point, haze here. 35 santa rosa. petaluma at 38. napa 39. elsewhere about 40 by the delta. and looking at current numbers on the chilly side out there. how much caller than we were yesterday? about 10 to 12 degrees cooler. you can see the fog moving to napa. 3/4 of a mile visibility. petaluma can't see anything at all. it has been improving around half moon bay. so looking at our forecast highlights, milder today, breezy and cooler sunday continuing to president's day.

the gusty winds north and east bay hills. no advisories we shouldn't see the wind we saw last weekend and looking at the spring-like weather to next we can. meaning no rain. looking at the highs for sunday, a little bit cooler in san francisco. but still the 60s, 70s arrive on monday. tuesday, we're still above average, in the mid-60s. and looking at the rainfall potential over the next ten days, yeah, not much happening here in northern california. highs today 63 in oakland. 67 in livermore and san jose. and some clouds tonight with the weak front in the 40s. the accuweather seven-day forecast, we're sunny today. warmer than we will be tomorrow, a little breezy. then you notice the gusty winds, higher elevations monday. big recovery in the afternoon with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s the rest of the week. >> i know we want rain. but there is nothing we can do about it. lets just enjoy the 70 next weekend, right. >> yeah a lot of people are. >> i will be thanks. lisa. when chinese and other asian

cultures lion dance is traditionally performed to bring good luck and frrn. it's of course typically performed during the lunar new year celebrations. and one of the few remaining schools still dedicated to reaching the dance is actually right in the bay area. >> the fire crackers scares away the evil spirits and brings the good spirits with the red papers. somewhat close to red carpet. lion dance represents the time when villagers had evil spirits wandering through the village terrorizing things and created the lion costume when they created these costume to scare away the bad spirits. a lot of the traditions are being withdrawn so this is important. the young's white crane has been around now 50 years. and the main goal is to build brotherhood, keep traditions

alive and share our art with the entire world to know where you came from. that's a big sense of our team.. it's actually quite rare to see the schools around san francisco. there used to be over 50 schools within chinatown alone. now there is only about five or six. the traditions you learn within this lion dance team can be carried on many years. helping me keep my traditions and it will help me learn a lot about my culture's history. i've been enjoyed this since i was a little kid, maybe even like 4 years old. it takes a lot of preparation to become a really good lion dancer. you're going to see a lot of acrobatic skills. we have a saying in the dance community taking ten years of practice to do a 10-minute performance. chinatown is a lot more special because all the traditions and cultures come together. as part of the lunar new year we
