as we take you to the east bay, a pretty picture with the sunshine and a few high clouds. mostly sunny day is on the way. 51 in san jose. upper 40s to low 50s right now. winds are going to kick up at the coast. we'll be cooler for the afternoon. as we go through the afternoon, those winds will be quite gusty, but the upper elevation winds, they'll be blowing overnight tonight into the holiday and i'll tell you how mild that's going to be and a look at that almost second last week in february coming up. hundreds of american cruise ship passengers are evacuating and boarding jets to come back home. we want to show you the new video from this morning as passengers disembarked the "diamond princess" cruise ship where they have been quarentined in japan for two weeks due to the coronavirus. hundreds of other passengers have been infected. the american evacuees will arrive sometime today.

some will be quarentined for another 14 days when they arrive at travis air force base. others will be flown to texas. we're working to find out exact arrival times. the death toll from the virus climbed to more than 1,600 people. the first fatality was also confirmed this weekend in europe and just this morning officials say a taiwanese man who tested positive for the virus has died. he's the first person in taiwan to die of the coronavirus. the number of infections has climbed to more than 69,000 people. we're in japan with more on the evacuation happening right now. >> reporter: this morning buses now arriving at the port that japan self-defense forces evacuated passengers. members of the defense force could be seen walking past the troubled ship.

the 400 americans on board have already been in quarentine for 12 days. back in the states, the clock restarts with 14 days in isolation on u.s. military bases. the cdc screening all americans for the virus. anyone with signs of covid-19 will not be allowed to board planes back to the u.s. and will join the other americans getting treatment. this evacuation cannot come soon enough. another 70 passengers on board tested positive for the virus bringing the total number to 355. the largest cluster of covid-19 outside of china. but some, like matthew smith of sacramento, say he would rather take his chances on the boat. >> we were confident in the quarentine that the japan officials have established and are following through on. we were upset that the u.s. plans involve breaking this quan teen. >> the u.s. government says americans like matt will not be allowed back in the u.s. until

march 4th, at the earliest as the u.s. tries to prevent an outbreak like china. with protective gather in short supply, we got an exclusive look inside this 3m factory where employees are working overtime. some u.s. hospitals are rationing masks. the cdc says they're working with u.s. manufacturers to help meet the global demand in case of a widespread outbreak. "abc7 news," japan. fears are hitting the port of oakland which sees countless ships come in from around the world. they're keeping an eye on how the coronavirus will impact trade numbers. numbers show both exports and imports are rising. since the outbreak of the coronavirus, some international shipping lines are canceling upcoming cargo trips. we spoken to several other bay area residents who are aboard the "diamond princess."

you can find those stories on our website. a man is facing serious charges for attacking two women on the embarcadero in san francisco. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard shares what witnesses saw. >> this is my commute, every day. that's scary. >> reporter: strong reaction to a scary incident early saturday morning. police say this man wearing a cap and overalls was arrested and charged with attacking two women. around 7:00 a.m., a woman running along the embarcadero was stabbed near pier 19. she says we saw the young woman on her knees. she had a knife in her upper back. she re-enacted the attack and said the suspect was agitated and swearing. he took off on a bicycle. ten minutes later, the same man is suspected of attacking another woman with some sort of tool. she was helped into an balance

with a bandage on her head. police say the attacks were random. both victims will survive. >> san francisco is kind of getting that way. we have too many people out on the streets that are a little bit psychotic. >> reporter: william lives on the embarcadeo. he's concerned about the violence. >> i don't know what the solution is. i know it's an issue and i carry pepper spray all the time. >> reporter: the suspect's name has not been released. he's facing two counts of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest. in san francisco, "abc7 news." a fund raiser took place to help koalas. a benefit from the australian koa koala foundation. their habitats were decimated by

time right now is 9:14. we will get a check of the weather with lisa argen in just a few minutes. ahead of tonight's nba all-star game in chicago, the league is renaming the award in honor of kobe bryant. the move was announced yesterday. kobe and his 13-year-old daughter were among nine people killed in that terrible helicopter crash three weeks ago. saturday night kicked off last night with a tribute to kobe, gianna and david stern. inside of silence, fans were asked to cheer for 24.2 seconds. >> we want this arena loud! we want to make some noise! let's go! give it up! come on! >> kobe became the youngest player to play in an all-star

through the nighttime and the winds shift. the system that is dropping down from the north bringing very little rain to the pacific northwest but it sets up to the east of us and that's going to allow for those offshore winds overnight into the hills of the north and east bay throughout your morning hours on monday. so 8:00, it's d diablo. tomorrow should be milder than today. our brought monitor, you can see in the yellow, indicates the areas that are dry, around the bay area, around the peninsula, the east bay. moderate drought from fresno to bakersfield and as we get through the next week, we'll probably go down to 40% -- actually up to 50% of california that is dryer than average. we need the rain. maybe we could get a few showers by the end of next weekend.

cerrito del norte station around 2:00 saturday afternoon. >> if you were there, you would see that he was running, trying to get away from the police. >> a witness who did not want to show her face on camera was sitting on b.a.r.t. moments before the shooting. >> they chased this boy through the train, off the platform. he jumped on the tracks and that's when they shot him. >> they fired off a lot of rounds up there. and everybody scattered. i ran out. >> reporter: at a press conference, the police chief said the two officers involved were responding to a call between a man and a woman, one of them armed. >> the officers got onto the platform, challenged that individual, who then ran off the train, down the platform and onto our trackway at which point a gun was produced by the suspect and our officers ultimately shot recovering a gun. >> reporter: the victim shot was airlifted to a nearby hospital.
