that passengers with symptoms would not be allowed on those charters flights, but authorities say the patients were discovered during the evacuation process after they had already left the ship. >> reporter: overnight, two jumbo jets landing in the united states. one in california, another in texas. both passenger planes packed with americans who have been quarantined on a cruise ship docked in japan over coronavirus concerns. cheryl and paul molesky, two of the american evacuees, taking a video of themselves leaving the "princess diamond." the couple quarantined since february 3rd. >> all right. this is it. we're about to step into the big wide world. so i have to put my mask on, and get going. >> reporter: this was the announcement they were waiting for. >> now calling only those american guests from emerald deck. >> you want to see what your next step is. >> yeah. >> your next step is you get to go forward, hand your passport to this gentleman in the yellow. he will hand it to the state department folks on either side.

they will keep your passport, and they will put you on a bus. the bus will take you to the airplane. the airplane takes you to the united states. >> reporter: hundreds of passengers aboard the ship have tested positive for covid-19. americans stricken with the virus can't go home yet. they'll be treated in japan. those landing in the u.s., looking at two more weeks of isolation. with protective gear in short supply around the world, abc news with an exclusive look inside this factory in south dakota where employees are working overtime to make face masks. as the coronavirus spreads, more than half the country in china's population facing lockdown or travel restrictions. and this morning, china has reported an uptick in new cases and more deaths. nearly 1,800 people there have now died since the outbreak began. turning now to the race for 2020. the countdown is on in nevada ahead of the next contest set there for saturday. with early voting now under way, the candidates are coming out swinging. joe biden and bernie sanders are trading jabs.

pete buttigieg is firing back at rush limbaugh, and everybody seems to be taking aim at michael bloomberg and his billions. abc's andrew dymburt has the latest. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: hey. good morning. it really was a busy weekend on the campaign trail. joe biden still looking to find his footing while pete buttigieg is trying to build on that lead. the attacks on bloomberg are mounting. over 18,000 democrats turned out for the first day in the first contest in the west. for the candidates -- >> please welcome, mayor pete. >> reporter: -- leading the field with the most delegates so far, former south bend, indiana mayor, pete buttigieg. he's taking aim at conservative talk radio host rush limbaugh who said he won't get elected because he's been kissing his husband on stage after debates. >> i'm pretty good at holding my tongue, but it is tempting to point out some differences between my understanding of family values and those of this president and his supporters like rush limbaugh.

barr. they signed a letter accusing barr of political interference after he overruled prosecutors to recommend a more lenient sentence for roger stone, a long time friend and adviser of president trump. last week barr told abc news he did not consult with the president about stone's case, but the ex-justice official say barr's actions speak louder than his words. search crews in colorado have recovered the bodies of two men killed in an avalanche over the weekend. the men were riding snowmobiles with a friend when they were caught in a slide. the third man managed to dig himself out of the snow and call for help, but the other two were buried 20 feet deep. officials say the men may have triggered that avalanche. breaking overnight, more rain is on the way. the pearl river in mississippi is expected to crest today at almost 40 feet. that's the third highest level ever recorded, more than a thousand homes are at risk just in three counties near jackson, and more rain is on the way.

officials warn the danger of flooding won't end any time soon. >> it will be days before we are out of the woods, and the waters start to recede, and the state and our first respders are prepared and ready to act. >> other rivers in mississippi are alsobove flood stage. the red cross has opened shelters for residents who evacuated their homes. and it's not just in mississippi. lands slides took two homes. this is about 100 miles east of memphis. firefighters rescued the owners of one of the houses before it fell. the other was vacant. time now for a look at your weather for thisonday morning. >> good morning. we'll see a little bit of a break from the wet weather across the southeast for our monday. some spotty showers late along the gulf coast, but as we get into our monday night all the way through the middle of the week with the dip in the jet stream, more rain in areas where we do not need the rain because we're still dealing with the flooding from the downpours last week.

the crew was forced to perform what's called a crab landing, flying into the wind and perpendicular to the runway to bring the jet in safely. good job by those pilots. a 14-year-old boy has been charged in the fatal stabbing last december of a college student in new york and officials say he will be tried as an adult because of the murder. another middle school student was already under arrest, but he's only accused of trying to rob tessa majors. the accused murderer allegedly stabbed her when she would not give up her phone. >> the complaint paints a picture of the video evidence, the blood evidence, the smartphone evidence, the icloud evidence, the witness identification and the defendant's own statements that were rigorously collected and examined prior to this arrest and indictment. >> officials also say the dna found in one of the victim's fingernail clippings matches the suspect. he is due in court on wednesday

for arraignment. a massive manhunt is under way in the houston area for one suspect, wanted for stealing a car with a child inside. police released surveillance video showing the suspect taking a purse from the car, climbing inside and driving away with a 5-year-old boy named richard inside. an amber alert was sent and five hours later, the car was found with richard inside reunited with his mother there. and a nature preserve near san jose is closed after a mountain lion attacked a little girl. the 6-year-old was walking on a nature trail with two other children and some adults. one of the adults chased the cat off by punching it in the ribs. the child suffered minor injuries. it's the third time in the past year the park has been closed because of mountain lion activity. breaking overnight, a big maker leaving one of the world's largest countries. general motors is pulling its popular holden brand out of australia as well as new zealand citing production costs. the car has been in the two

have left parts of the resort unusable. about 50 tons of snow were dropped on the slopes. environmentalists criticized that move. and now to the colorado woman under arrest accused of drugging a new mom and trying to kidnap her newborn. >> it's a bizarre case playing out across at least two states and now more women are coming forward with similar stories. >> my name is julia parker. >> reporter: just last year julia parker was running for mayor of colorado springs. this morning, she is behind bars, all part of a bizarre scheme to allegedly attempt the kidnapping of a newborn baby. >> we believe she was attempting to find a small female infant and was going to kidnap the baby. >> reporter: investigators say the 38-year-old posing as a baby portrait photographer reached out to a facebook moms group offering free newborn photo sessions to build up her portfolio. a single mom in washington whose identity has not been released

responded to the offer. police say parker went to her home several times and on the last visit, parker's 16-year-old daughter gave her a cupcake. the mom telling police immediately after eating it, she became numb and drowsy, then began vomiting. she ordered parker and her daughter out of the house and called 911. >> she believed that she was drugged and that they were going to take her baby. through our investigation, we have determined that that probably was the case. >> reporter: amanda appling says she responded to the same post in december hoping to get photos of her baby boy. >> she informed she wasn't looking for a boy at the time, but she would save his picture and let me know later on if she was looking for a little boy to do photos with. so i just let it go. >> parker is being held on attempted kidnapping and assault charges. her daughter is also in custody. both are expected in court tomorrow. elton john was forced to cut short a concert in new zealand over the weekend.

the 72-year-old told fans he couldn't go on any longer after losing his voice. john told the audience that he had walking pneumonia, and he was helped off the stage. tour promoters say the singer is resting and plans to resume shows later this week. turning now to a rare and revealing interview from britain's future queen, kate middleton. she opened up about the struggles and joys of motherhood in a wide-ranging podcast interview. listeners also got a rare glimpse of life inside the royal household. the mother of three young children also spoke about her difficult pregnancies. she even discussed mommy guilt. >> do you struggle with mum guilt? >> yes, absolutely. anyone who doesn't as a mother is actually lying. yeah, all the time. and, you know, even this morning, coming to the nursery visit here, george and charlotte were, like, how could you possibly not be dropping us off at school this morning? it's a constant challenge. you hear it time and time again from mums and you're always questioning your own decisions and judgments.
