6:00 pm
while the nevada caucuses may be the next contest, bernie sanders hosted a huge campaign rally in the bay area today. >> yes. turning out thousands of people in richmond. sanders hit all his marks on health care and college for everyone, but he also took aim at one notable rival, whom his campaign apparently sees as his biggest challenger, especially here in california for the democrat nomination for president. >> abc7 news reporter laura anthony is live in richmond tonight with the story. laura? >> well, hi, dan. this huge warehouse behind me was packed with people. the sanders campaign estimates merely 10,000 showed up. as many as there were inside, there were hundreds outside. >> thank you! >> senator bernie sanders and his wife jane took the stage to a huge ovation in richmond. >> unbelievable! >> in his 30-minute speech, sanders stuck with his usual themes, including free college, housing and health care for all and defeating donald trump. >> we are going to defeat donald
6:01 pm
trump because the american people know that he is running a corrupt administration. >> the speech was briefly interrupted by two topless protesters hustled out by security. >> and i hear the establishment saying oh, bernie can't win the election. >> sanders did not mention any of his democratic opponents except for one, the one who might be his biggest challenger in california next month. >> now mr. bloomberg, like anybody else has a right to run for president. he does not have a right to buy the presidency. >> sanders also implored californians to get out and vote and for the state's five million no party preference voters to support him. the crowd to see sanders stretched around the building and down the street. those who could not get inside pushed up to the barricades to see, or at least hear the senator from vermont. >> i'm part of students for
6:02 pm
bernie. and he is the only candidate that will fight for the young people. >> my friends and i agree that he's probably not our candidate, but just like we would go see che guevara or castro were he to appear in richmond so close we want to avail ourselves of this and see him up close and personal. >> that woman showed up here, but she told us she is actually deciding between elizabeth warren and amy klobuchar. as for sanders, i'm told he is doing as many as three of these events per day. and as we speak, he is preparing for a rally that starts at 7:00 up in tacoma, washington. of course, all of this come, dan and alma, just days before the caucuses in nevada. >> so laura, a question, though. those protesters, do we know what that was all about? >> well, here anyway it went rather quickly. yesterday in carson city, several of them actually got up on to the stage with senator sanders.
6:03 pm
they were topless. they were arrested. it's our understanding that they're animal activists, and they're wanting senator sanders to end his support for both the dairy industry and for animal agriculture. i can tell you that two of the protesters yesterday in carson city are from oakland. >> all right. laura anthony reporting live for us tonight. thank you. >> well, sanders supporters are known to be quite vocal and very active online, particularly on social media. michael bloomberg's campaign picked up on this and released a video targeting what are known as the bernie bros for their aggressive behavior. >> abc7 news got a chance to speak to senator sanders' wife today about the video and his supporters. she says they do not condone this behavior and want them to have positive conversations. >> the fact is we have 2.5 million supporters on twitter, and some of them, maybe a very small number of them are
6:04 pm
negative and speak out in ways. and we tell them over and over again, we don't want your support if you're going to be disrespectful. we want you to be respectful and engage in ideas. >> jane sanders said she has seen similar behavior from supporters of other candidates, and said she would appreciate it if they were given less attention. before you vote, you'll want to check out our abc7 news original series chasing california. we spent time with bernie sanders, michael bloomberg and we have examined the independent voter. you can find full episode at abc7news.com. "chasing california" is also available on the abc7 news news app, amazon fire tv, and your youtube channel as well. check out our youtube channel when you can. tomorrow is the deadline to register to vote, but for the first time, california will allow voters to register as well as reregister with a different political party up to and on election day at all polling

places. anyone who registers to vote after tomorrow's deadline will receive a conditional voter registration and conditional ballot. conditional ballots are counted but only after the registration is confirmed. go online and check out our frequently asked questions guide to california's primary on abc7news.com. this evening china reported more than 1800 new coronavirus cases and 98 deaths in the last 24 hours. that puts the death toll in china at 1868. but the world health organization says this disease, named coindividuvid-19 is not a as other viruses. apple is cutting its sales forecast because of coronavirus. while factories are reopening, many workers in wuhan are having trouble returning to work because of the large quarantine zone. >> the risk is very high in china. it is high regionally and it is high around the world that is
6:06 pm
not the risk is high of a pandemic. the risk is high that the disease may spread further. >> the diamond princess cruise ship has the most coronavirus cases outside of china at 454. there were about 3700 passengers and crew on board the ship, which has been docked off the coast of japan. some americans who have been quarantined on the ship for the past two weeks are now in the u.s. and face another two weeks of quarantine. two charter flights carrying coronavirus evacuees landed in the overnight hours at lackland air force base in san antonio and 14 have been diagnosed with coronavirus. abc7 reporter luz pena has the details. back on american soil, but still not home. >> oh, gosh, fantastic. it was a trip home. >> reporter: bob and his wife julie choi were among the 177 passengers from the diamond
6:07 pm
princess cruise ship who landed last night at the travis air force base in fairfield. ten days ago julie choi showed us inside her cabin. >> the room i'm in right now is an interior room without window. >> today she confirmed she landed on u.s. soil. we spoke to bob young over the phone. they're now at quarantine orders at a nearby hotel. before they left japan, they received a coronavirus screening and then boarded a flight to the u.s. >> we sat in a bus for seven hours, no water. couldn't get off the bus. we would move some place and wait on the bus again. it was horrible. >> reporter: the state department said 14 americans did not show any symptoms of the virus when they were removed from the cruise ship. their results came back positive in the evacuation process, but despite this, they were allowed to fly back home with everyone else. on the flight to california, there were seven passengers with the virus. >> they had a number of people that were segregated on the airplane. they had a plastic tarpon area set up.
6:08 pm
that's where they put them. >> in a statement, the air force public team says if any passenger displays symptoms, they'll will transported for an off base hospital for special care. once off the plane they were placed on a 14-day quarantine period. >> it's tough. i'm losing essentially a month out of my life. 14 days on the ship and now now another 14 days. >> and their journey is not over. in fairfield, luz pena, abc7 news. >> and there are so many questions about coronavirus, including symptoms and the best way to protect yourself. you'll find answers on abc7news.com. the search continues tonight for a palo alto couple who has been missing since friday. they were staying at airbnb in inverness and were supposed to check out saturday morning. the area is popular for hiking. abc7 news reporter anser hassan explains what was left behind that's added to the mystery surrounding their disappearance.
6:09 pm
>> search and rescue crews spent the day searching near point reyes national seashore for these two, 77-year-old carol kiparsky and 72-year-old ian irwin. >> they have been missing since friday. >> it increases the urgency of our search. >> sergeant brenton snyder with the marin county sheriff's office says the couple were vacationing at this airbnb in inverness. the owner called police when the couple didn't check out on saturday. sergeant snyder says the couple may have again out, leaving behind their cell phone, wallets and car. >> considering the amount of personal effects that were left behind, it's definitely a sign that they intended on coming back to the residence. search crews stepped up efforts on monday since fog limited the search on monday. 136 search and rescue volunteers tracked the dense vegetation along the vast hills assisted by drones. >> you can get tired, you know.
6:10 pm
and take it easy. but otherwise should be able to get to the road at one point. >> he hiked these trails a lot. they were surprised to hear about the missing couple. they say the area is popular with hikers, so even if someone gets lost, hikers will usually run into people who can help. but iman says it is strange that a couple on vacation didn't take their cell phones. >> in fact, when i go for a hike, i don't only go with my cell phone, i go with my sensitive and my charger, you know, just in case. >> sergeant snyder says the couple has stayed at this airbnb before and they know the area well. he says there is no evidence of any foul play. >> we still believe that there is a strong likelihood that they could be alive. and that's why we have so many ground searchers out here looking for them. >> in marin county, anser hassan, abc7 news. >> the couple rents out three rooms in their palo alto home. tenants say the pair have gone hiking and camping in the past, but it's unlike them to vanish in the way they did at point reyes.
6:11 pm
>> they like camping. they usually go for a couple of days or so. but usually they've always been back on time, or at least just email if the plans are going change or something. >> that tenant says he last heard from them on wednesday. the couple sent an email to the renters before they left for point reyes area with instructions to bring in the paper, turn on the porch lights. that message ended with happy valentine's day. a walk in a park was anything but peaceful for a south bay family when a mountain lion attacked a 6-year-old girl. >> yeah, next we are live with the search for that animal, and how trackers will know they've got the right one. i'm spencer christian. the bay area's last soaking rainfall is january 16th and february has been bone-dry so far. i'll give you a look at when we might have more rain copping our way in just a moment. turning dead space into useful space. hey, get my clothes. i'm dion lim in san francisco with the revolutionary company brzezinski: take a look at this. tom steyer... berman: tom steyer... o'donnell: surging in nevada. scarborough: this is working for tom steyer.
6:12 pm
o'donnell: surging in south carolina. smerconish: i don't think it's just resources. mitchell: surging in two new polls out of nevada and south carolina. wallace: polling at double digits. king: up eleven points from october. that is dramatic. steyer: i'm saying we have a broken government. that's what's going on in washington, dc. it's been bought by corporations, and my question to the american people is who do you think is going to change that? i'm tom steyer and i approve this message. metastatic breast cancer is relentless, but i was relentless first. relentless about learning the first song we ever danced to. about teaching him to put others first. about helping her raise her first child. and when i was first diagnosed, my choice was everyday verzenio. it's the only one of its kind that can be taken every day. it gives us more time without cancer progressing. verzenio is the only cdk4 & 6 inhibitor approved with hormonal therapy that can be taken every day for postmenopausal women with hr+, her2- mbc. diarrhea is common, may be severe, or cause dehydration or infection.
6:13 pm
at the first sign of diarrhea, call your doctor, start an anti-diarrheal, and drink fluids. before taking verzenio, tell your doctor if you have fever, chills, or other signs of infection. verzenio may cause low white blood cell counts, which may cause serious infection that can lead to death. life-threatening inflammation of the lungs can occur. talk to your doctor if you have new or worsening trouble breathing, cough, or chest pain. serious liver problems can happen. symptoms include tiredness, appetite loss, stomach pain, and bleeding or bruising. blood clots that can lead to death have occurred. tell your doctor if you have pain or swelling in your arms or legs, shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid breathing or heart rate, or if you are pregnant or nursing. my relentless reason: it's them. my choice with my doctor: it's verzenio. ask your doctor if everyday verzenio is right for your first treatment. othroughout the country for the past twelve years, mr. michael bloomberg is here. vo: leadership in action. mayor bloomberg and president obama worked together in the fight for gun safety laws, to improve education, and to develop innovative ways to help teens gain the skills needed to find good jobs. obama: at a time when washington is divided in
6:14 pm
old ideological battles he shows us what can be achieved when we bring people together to seek pragmatic solutions. bloomberg: i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message. part of building a better bay area is tackling one of the region's most persistent and frustrating crimes, talking about car break-ins. and a south bay assembly man is just tired of it. the assemblyman kansen chu will introduce legislation this month that will increase penalties. break-ins will be elevated to felonies if criminals take electronic devices with your personal information stored on it. police support this tougher punishment. >> criminals feel like they have carte blanche to simply come into our cities and take whatever they want out of our vehicles. so i think that this is a healthy discussion. >> last year chu secured a $3.7 million grant from the state to help five bay area police agencies fight this epidemic of break-ins. now we want to hear your ideas
6:15 pm
about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area group on facebook. a bill intended to deter party houses at short-term rental properties will be introduced tomorrow in sacramento. this legislation from east bay state senator steve glaser will allow smaller cities to levee fines of up to $5,000 on short-term rental hosts who violate local laws. this effort comes nearly four months after five people were killed during a party at a house in orinda that was frequently rented out for events. >> what we are doing today is honing in on those who are renting their property, typically in residential neighborhoods, that they are held to account for ensuring the tranquility of the neighborhood in which they live. >> right now smalle cities can only fine homeowners a maximum of a thousand dollars. this legislation does not target the renters or rental platforms. glaser says the co-sponsor of his bill is now working on
6:16 pm
legislation that would target the rental plrm platforms them. a 6-year-old south bay girl not only survived a mountain lion attack, but is also providing a valuable clue to eventually identify the cat. the attack happened sunday morning near cupertino. now armed with dna taken from the girl, the hunt is under way to find that mountain lion. david louie is live at the park. david? >> well, ama, we're happy to report that the girl is okay. her identity has not been released. the tracking dogs have been out here all day trying to pick up the scent of the mountain lion that uncharacteristically made an attack during the daytime. the tracking dogs have been given a rest for the evening, but will be back out in the morning. this is natural habitat for mountain lions, but this is the first time one has attacked a park visitor. on average, trail cameras pick up a mountain lion once a week overnight when they're active. that's why this incident is unusual. the 6-year-old girl was walking sunday morning with four adults
6:17 pm
and three other children. >> we know we have a mother that tends to stick around here quite often. but we don't know the sex of this cat. it could be a big male moving through. it could be just another lion kind of passing through the area. >> sky 7 was overhead as officers from the department of fish and wildlife took four tracking dogs to search wildcat canyon trail where the girl was attacked. the mountain lion left scratch marks and two shallow indentations from its fangs on her calf. that was enough to leave samples they can use to make sure to identify the animal that bit her. >> we have analysis of the clothing and bandages of the young girl, and we confirmed with our forensics people that a mountain lion was responsible for transferring dna to her clothing and her wounds. >> they had a steady stream of steady visitors turned away. the park will remain closed until it's deemed safe. >> will be more alert and take
6:18 pm
all the precautions of making ourselves big and trying to fight it off. >> that is what saved the 6-year-old girl. one of the adults punched the mountain lion and it retreated. six years ago, a similar attack a similar attack on a 6-year-old boy happened just over the ridge on a trail near a winery. the mountain lion was acting strangely and was euthanized. no decision has been made what will happen to the mountain lion involved in this case. relocation is not necessarily the answer as one officer told us, when a mountain lion feasts on livestock, even when relocated, it tends to continue that behavior. so you can get the inference about the behavior of a mountain lion once it has attacked a human. we're live near cupertino, david louie, abc7 news news. >> david, thank you. so what should you do if you see a mountain lion in your neighborhood or on a trail? we have a one-minute video with life-saving advice that reminds you to stay where you are. don't run. face the animal, make noise and
6:19 pm
make yourself look bigger. you can see the entire video and share it with your friends by going to our website, abc7news.com. >> your instinct is to run. >> don't do that. let's turn our attention to the forecast. as we get back to work, we're hoping for rain. >> spencer christian, anything coming our way? >> well, there is a little spritz or sprinkle that may materialize. at the moment things are looking a little dry. i'm going take this down and go back and start with something different. and here we good. that's a live view from mount tam looking down on to the bay and san francisco. the lights are getting brighter, even though it's dark outside. 63 degrees here in the city right now. 71 in oakland. redwood 70 degrees. 63 in san jose. 71 in gilroy, and 54 at half moon bay. bright skies over the golden gate and traffic is flowing very nicely. it's 61 in santa rosa and petaluma. napa 65. fairfield 61.

mid to upper 60s at concord and livermore. and the view from our exploratorium camera, looking across the calm bay waters towards the bay bridge. these are our forecast features. a little cooler tomorrow than it was today. this dry mild pattern will continue for the next few days. there is that slight chance of showers on friday. and we'll get to that in a moment. first, let's take a look at just how dry it is right now. and the driest february on the record by the way was february 1864 with no measurable rainfall recorded here in the bay area. right now if we continue our current pattern, we could tie that record. january 16th is when we had our last soaking rainstorm. and so far in these first 17 days of february 2020, we have had no rain at all. so we're on the lookout for it. but it just doesn't seem to be materializing. overnight we certainly will not have rain. we'll have a few passing high clouds. mainly clear skies, and a little bit of fog just offshore. overnight lows mainly in the mid to low 40s. tomorrow look for hazy sunshine
6:21 pm
with highs ranging from low 60s a the coast to mid-60s around the bay shoreline to mid and upper 60s inland. here is a look at our forecast animation starting on thursday afternoon at 5:00. notice on friday, a little system that is going to bring some moisture into the area. there are a couple of different computer models that have a different outlook. this one shows almost nothing but a triple of rain coming to the bay area. the other model shows a little bit more which might be measurable. right now we're just going with this one. we go into the weekend. it looks like sunday morning, another system brings a chance of some showers down but not into the main part of the bay area. the accuweather seven-day forecast looks like all dry days so far with the best chance of a spritz or a sprinkle being on friday. even then it look likes it won't amount to much if it materializes. dry, mild weather and mainly sunny days with the exception of friday all the way through the seven-day period.
6:22 pm
>> wow. >> this could be a record-setting february again. o >> not in the best way. thanks, spencer. free parking in. it's a sunday tradition that's now in jeopardy. see what else the people in charge of city parking want to change. and for several months we've been bringing you localish stories on abc7 news. abc7news.com and our facebook and instagram pages. we received great feedback celebrating great people and things happening in the bay area. so much we are happy to bring you the localish network. now you can watch localish all day long. using an antenna on channel 7.2 over the air. on charter, spectrum 791. come pex xfinity 719. google fiber 106 and media come growing up in a family that struggled economically powerfully influenced my values. bernie sanders he's fighting to raise wages.

6:24 pm
tis better than the criminal in democrathe white house.esident we all have progressive plans to address the big challenges facing our country. what makes me different, is i've been working for ten years outside of washington, to end the corporate takeover of our democracy, and to return power to the american people. i started need to impeach to hold this lawless president accountable. i'm proposing big reforms like term limits... ...a national referendum... ...and ending corporate money in politics. as president, i'll declare climate change an emergency on day 1. and, use those powers to finally address the climate crisis.
6:25 pm
and, i've spent 30 years building a successful international business. so, i can take on donald trump on the economy - and beat him. i'm tom steyer and i approve this message - because there is nothing more powerful than the unified voice of the american people. changes are coming tomorrow to ferry service along the embarcadero in san francisco. richmond ferry arrivals and departures are moving to a different gate. alameda, oakland and harbor bay passengers will have to line up at a different gate as well. these changers are because of construction on a pedestrian bridge that will limit access near the ferry building. there are no changes to vallejo service. could soon cost you more to ride the ferry too. a proposal would bump fares up on most routes by a little mr. than a dollar by 2025. it is a little cheaper for clipper card holders. fares would go up 3% every year
6:26 pm
starting in 2021. for those who commute to and from vallejo, the monthly pass would be replaced with the idea of getting customers to switch to clipper cards. a plan calls for major parking changes in san francisco. it will be presented to decision makers tomorrow. the 102-page plan includes dramatic proposals. some are bound to make residents angry. here are a few. extend hours for all meters and free parking on sundays. eliminate disabled placard use at green zones, allow the use of cameras on buses and street sweepers to allow to ticket for double parking and on sweeping days. and allow the use of fixed cameras for illegal stopping and parking. in the bay area, every square foot counts. >> yes. where you can find ideas for squeezing into a small space, you might want to look up. we'll take you inside the san francisco studio where the bed and much more is stored in the ceiling. you've heard of a sex

now news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> a local german shepherd rescue group is drawing a connection between the abuse of animals and people. >> and now it's calling for a registry of animal abusers. it would be simila to a sexual abuser registry. >> 7 on your side's michael finney takes a closer look at a unique proposal on a story you'll see only on abc7 news. >> this is not a first. what's interesting here is an animal abuse registry has been in place in the state of tennessee since 2016. now a case expected to begin jury selection this year in contra costa county has found a new call for a similar registry right here in california. gary reynolds, seen here in this center is accused of eight counts of felony animal abuse in contra costa county. former coworker and joint chief jordan gingrich won a restraining order against him for domestic violence in 2018.
6:31 pm
reynolds' attorney says three women have accused his client of domestic violence and all have been dismissed. one of those women is breanna emmet, the mother of two of his children. he called all of gingrich's allegations against him untrue and unfounded. gingrich did not show up for her hearing and the same judge ruled against all three women and ordered them to pay reynolds' attorneys fees and costs. >> it is common for domestic violence victims to recant or minimize or just not show up at all. that's accurate. but like i said, there were three different women at the same time who filed's allegations that were mirror images and all three were thrown out. >> the animal registry in tennessee is based in part on the theory there is a connection between animal abuse and domestic violenc larry parks is with the napa valley german shepherd rescue group. they provided both financial and
6:32 pm
moral support to the family of gunner, a german shepherd who died while under the care of reynolds and his company, nor cal canine. >> people need to be aware. the community needs to be aware. abusing a dog, abusing an animal is the first steps to human violence. >> bruce wagaman teaches animal law at uc berkeley school of law. he too sees a connection. >> people who abuse people or animals simply have a mind-set to abuse inferior physically weaker individuals. and so it doesn't matter whether it's a human or an animal. >> german shepherd rescue believes a registry of animal abusers in california would be a step forward. >> we felt it was very important for a community to either know about it and learn about it. >> reporter: wegman says he is indifferent about the idea. >> if there is somebody that could be rehabilitated that could prevent them from ever being rehabilitated. so i'm really not sure. >> and interesting note.
6:33 pm
jordan gingrich, one of the women who accused reynolds of domestic violence is herself a dog trainer. she recently lost eight small claims cases accusing her of accepting money for services not completed. one of those cases she lost also accused her of leaving the dog in her care >> thanks, michael. let's take a look now at san francisco's city hall. you can see it's lit up in red, white and blue in honor of president's day. >> very nice. in the race to choose america's next president, we are less than a week away for nevada. >> eight candidates remain in the race. >> abc7 news reporter mona kosar abdi looks at how they're trying to win over last-minute voters. >> with early voting under way in nevada, the democratic presidential candidates are
6:34 pm
making a big push to win over residents ahead of this closely watched caucus. pete buttigieg riding a wave of momentum from his strong showings in iowa and new hampshire, taking a swipe at president trump in front of a crowd of veterans in reno. >> one of the benefits of having served is that you've seen worse forming of incoming than tweets or typos. >> earlier in the day the former mayor releasing a in nod send to latino voters who make up a third of the population. amy klobuchar and elizabeth warren also running ads in the nevada markets. joe biden counting on a comeback in the state, stressing that the vast majority of the population from diverse backgrounds have not weighed in on the competition. >> nevada has not been heard from, nor has south carolina, nor have the super tuesday states. >> but as the candidates make their appeal to voters, they're also shifting their focus on to michael bloomberg. bloomberg is not even on the ballot in nevada, but the businessman has spent an unprecedented $381 million on ads so far.
6:35 pm
>> i never thought i was going to be able to compete with some of my opponents' bank accounts. >> bloomberg is currently polling at third place in the national polls behind bernie boyne and joe biden. and in his latest digital ad, bloomberg targets sanders by showing aggressive and sometimes threatening tweets supposedly from sanders supporters. sanders firing back. >> we will not create the energy and excitement we need to defeat donald trump if that candidate pursued racist policies like stop and frisk. >> and nevada is the first and only caucus state to hold four days of in-person early voting. for those unable to do so on saturday. on day 1, 56% of early voters were first time caucusgoers. a week from today is the public memorial service for kobe and gianna bryant. >> but the grief in los angeles is bigger than the staples
