>> overnight we've learned newman is in serious condition but doctors say amazingly his injuries are not life-threatening. this morning, concern for nascar star ryan newman after this crash. just before the end of the daytona 500, newman's car flipped hurtling down the track on its roof. >> in a shower of sparks on his roof. >> reporter: the number 6 ford coming to rest still on fire as fuel was seen pouring out of it. watch the crash again. newman was in the lead nearing the finish line when his car spun and hit the wall head on and went airborne and collided with the car of corey lajoie. when the car stopped sliding on its roof, crews rushed to put out the fire. spectators stunned. sports anchor joe kepner from our orlando abc station wftv right there. >> it was easy to see the wreck because it happened directly in front of us where we were standing in victory lane, but it was difficult to see after that because of how far the car slid after that. we know that ryan newman, they had to cut the roof off of his car to get him out.

>> reporter: emts rushed the 42-year-old to the hospital. the vehicle a mangled mess as it was later hauled off the track. denny hamlin won the race by a fraction of a second. his second straight daytona win but his celebration quickly became subdued because of the terrifying crash just moments before. >> number one, we're praying for ryan. >> reporter: the race finished 28 hours after president trump visited. >> gentlemen, start your engines. >> reporter: nascar's biggest event delayed a day by rain. major crashes took out half the drivers even before newman's fiery collision. newman's wife, krissie, who announced their separation last week reacting with just this on twitter, omg, and nascar legend dale earnhardt jr. whose father died in his final lap at daytona in 2001 writing, big prayers for newman. >> yes. >> reporter: overnight fans celebrated outside this daytona beach hospital after news spread that newman's injuries are not life-threatening. >> whoo! he's the rocket man for a reason.

whoo! thank you, lord. rocket man, indeed. winner denny hamlin addressed those who criticized his post-race celebration. hamlin tweeting that he had no idea of the severity of the crash until he reached the victory lane. turning to the breaking news in the coronavirus emergency, a senior doctor treating patients in wuhan, china, the epicenter of the outbreak, has died. he was the director of the hospital, and he is the second prominent chinese doctor to die from the virus. meanwhile, 14 american cruise ship passengers infected with the virus are being treated in california and nebraska. abc's andrew dymburt is live in washington with more. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: hey, good morning, and there is no vaccine for this virus or any known effective therapeutic treatment, so for now those americans who were evacuated and back on u.s. soil will have to spend two weeks in quarantine and in medical isolation. this morning, 14 americans evacuated from a cruise ship in

japan who tested positive for coronavirus are back in the u.s. some arrived in texas monday before traveling to a specialized national quarantine unit in nebraska for further evaluation. >> we have the facilities, we have the resources and the expertise to handle these kind of individuals. >> reporter: ten have already tested positive for the virus now officially named covid-19 and on that "diamond princess" cruise ship in japan, so far 454 cruise passengers have been infected. passenger jerri larson was one of those stuck at sea. >> it was fine. we were very well taken care of. we were very lucky we had a bigger room and a full balcony. they fed us well. i felt like they were taking extremely good care of us. >> reporter: meanwhile, a second flight of evacuated americans from japan. >> the bus will take you to the airplane, the airplane takes you to the united states. >> reporter: landing at travis air force base in california, another quarantine zone. >> i have to put my mask on. >> reporter: at least four of those passengers also testing

positive, and across the globe coronavirus crossing more than two dozen countries while world health officials work to stop the spread. >> w.h.o. is continuing to work night and day on several fronts to prepare countries. we're providing advice to countries on how to do screening, testing, contact dressing and treatment. >> reporter: now all but two of the cases in the u.s. are linked to travel to wuhan, china, of course, the center of the outbreak. kenneth, elizabeth. >> andrew, thank you. former national security adviser john bolton made his first public appearance as the impeachment trial ended without his testimony. speaking out at duke university bolton expressed concern that the white house was trying to censure him as he plans to release his book next month, but he refrained from sharing details about president trump. reporters were only permitted to record the top of bolton's remarks, however, abc news

look at this one, the demolition of a dallas office building did not go exactly as planned. the implosion was supposed to bring down this entire 11-story structure, but the tower of the center of the building is still standing. on social media it created the hashtag leaning tower of dallas. crews are now planning to use a wrecking ball to finish the job. a huge setback for gun control activists in virginia. state lawmakers rejected an assault weapons ban proposed by the governor. several democrats voted with republicans to shelve the bill for a year so the issue can be studied further. the bill would have prohibited the sale of many semiautomatic weapons including ar-15-style rifles. those in favor of the measure say it would help prevent mass shootings.

breaking overnight, the boy scouts of america organization has filed for bankruptcy. the youth group is facing hundreds of lawsuits over how it handled sexual abuse allegations. the bankruptcy filing puts those suits on hold. in an open letter to the victims of sexual abuse, the national chairman acknowledges that proper procedures were not always followed. and pier 1 is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. the furniture chain plans to close up to 450 stores in the u.s. and canada. the company is in talks with several potential buyers. what does a $479 million renovation look like? well, at buckingham palace, it looks like this. crews removing 19th century wallpaper piece by piece. the delicate paper has to come down because it might be damaged by vibrations from construction. the full taxpayer funded renovation is set to end in seven years. and our nation's most famous castle is getting a makeover. our parent company disney says cinderella castle at walt disney

a recent storm caused it to run aground. now to the shocking and brutal murder of a popular hollywood sex therapist. >> dr. amie harwick was killed at her hollywood hills home after a fall from a third story balcony, and now her ex-boyfriend has been arrested on suspicion of murder. this morning, a murder investigation in the hollywood hills following the death of a popular sex therapist. >> you would never expect something like this to happen. >> reporter: police were initially called to the home on saturday to investigate reports of a woman screaming. officers say they found dr. amie harwick in critical condition after apparently suffering a fall from her third story balcony. she later died at the hospital. after an investigation police arrested harwick's ex-boyfriend gareth pursehouse. >> she's just an amazing person. she's an amazing woman. she's strong, intelligent and beautiful, and she's a great friend, and she didn't deserve to die the way she did. >> reporter: harwick built a

$2 million bail, and according to "the hollywood reporter," "the price is right" could postpone tapings until next month. a new study finds a link between sleep deprivation and high calorie food cravings for women. researchers in new york say a study of about 500 women reveal the less they slept, the more they craved sugar and saturated fats. doctors found that troubling because women are already at high risk for obesity and sleep disorders. no one has been arrested or claimed responsibility for violating a national icon. plymouth rock where the pilgrims landed nearly 400 years ago was sprayed with red paint and so were other monuments in the area about 30 miles south of boston. the vandalism was quickly cleaned up, and plymouth rock is again ready for the celebrations later this year. amazon ceo jeff bezos is committing some of his fortune, $10 billion, to fight climate change. the world's richest man is creating the bezos earth fund. workers have long criticized the company's environmental record

make sure to check the schedule because there are gate and queue changes. alameda and oakland have changes today. new overnight the chp responded to a crash involving a lyft driver. look at how bad that is. you can see the front of the car is destroyed. the single car crashed near the treasure island off ramp. right now we don't know how the driver is doing or if there were any passengers at the time in the car. in developing news japanese officials confirmed 88 more coronavirus cases on that diamond princess cruise ship. >> the total to 592. the number of dead around the world stands at more than 1,800 people. worldwide more than 73,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus. the number of cases in the u.s. has nearly doubled to 29 because of passengers evacuated and flown back to the u.s.
