a cancer causing chemical is found in ground water. thank you for joining us. >> it is believed the chemicals are coming from an old plating metal company nearby. >> the small yellow square in the upper portion of your screen is the plating company. te larger section in lighter yellow. >> laura anthony is live at the school. the families and the school district must be scrambling. >> reporter: well, they are. we should say that plating company, one of several options. they do believe that is the likely source. it is important to say the school is closed. they don't think it is coming from on campus but rather the surrounding neighborhood. that's why that's the are looking to the state department of toxic substances for health. not only identifying the source of the toxic material but also, eliminating it.

teachers and staff at west oakland's mcclymonds high school are removing plants, animals and their own supplies now that the school is closed. a reality that may last well past this week. >> what we're doing is we are exercising extreme caution here. because some testing that we did on an unrelated matter that turned up what is called tce. it is used for metal processing. >> it was discovered last friday while tests were being conducted near football field on an unrelated matter. the concern is that it is vaporizing and creating a health hazard for students inside mcclymonds. there are several sites that could be the source. but the most likely is an old plating plant. lane metal finishers, a few hundred feet away. >> one of the issues we need to deal with is to try to understand what is the extent of the ground water plume.

what is the magnitude and what is the source of it. >> what are your concerns? >> well, the safety of my daughter and her classmates and this community as a whole. >> reporter: the incident is just the latest scare for the community in and around the climate. over the years, testing has found high levels of lead. they found lead contamination in the drinking water from dated metal fixtures. >> things in the past here. we've had very high profile cases of cancer on this campus. those include a graduate who died of cancer last november. another mac football player, darrell aikens who died from leukemia in 2017. >> what is your reaction? >> very heart breaking. it is sad and kind of has your mind wondering. it could be a possibility. it has something to do with his diagnosis. >> reporter: we're told the school is being closed out of an

student athletes are constantly on the go with their busy schedules. but one school is preparing athletes both on and off the playing field through course work in the kitchen. chris nguyen has the story you'll see only on 7. >> reporter: the newest course at san jose state university isn't one you'll find in the campus catalogue. >> you get to hang out with all your boys and cook a bunch of food. >> reporter: they are attending the sirs session of chop. cooking healthy forment on malperformance. >> this is something we never got into. i never really learned anything about cooking. >> reporter: the program was created after football coaches saw a need for emphasizing the need for cooking education. >> you won't get the benefits
