>> the good news is the fatal crash that we've been following all morning long that was causing such a mess is finally cleared, southbound 101 before 3rd avenue. speeds are still slow, down to 6 miles per hour. they just got things moving. there is another crash involving three krar cars on 101 past br, still blocking one lane. but things should be moving there momentarily as well. this is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, nice and clear this morning. new overnight, police are investigating a hit and run crash in san francisco involving two people including at least one homeless person. that crash took place around 3:00 a.m. at mission and one person we spoke with who lives in a tent nearby tells us what they heard and saw. >> i was laying in my tent, i heard an acceleration, i heard it hit an object. i realized the object was the trash can.

the trash can hit the bus stop, and the two people that were in it. the one gentleman that was in the bus stop had just recently got hit by another car. >> it appears police did make an arrest at the scene. developing news in oakland, mcclymonds high school is closed after a cancer causing chemical was found in the ground water. the chemical is tce. the school is located on 28th and myrtle streets, and parents there are demands answers. amy hollyfield is in the newsroom with this. >> students are home again today, school is closed. parents are scared and angry, they did not hold back at a meeting last night. administrators called an emergency meeting to brief parents on what they know and it lasted for two hours. parents have questions about their kid's health and the future of their education. they got a robocall telling them the school was closing down because of a chemical that was

found in the ground water near the school last friday. high levels of lead have been found around the school before. two students died from cancer, one in november and the other in 2017. repeatedly last night parents asked officials to address a possible connection. >> you don't have a solid answer, but hypothetically speaking this, hypothetically speaking that, we didn't even get that. >> i don't want to look back a few years from now and wish i had taken my daughter out of this school. >> there's a lot of questions out there. i still have a lot of questions. all we can do is answer them the best way we can. >> school officials say the drinking water is not affected, but the tce levels found nearby were high enough that it could vaporize into the school's air. the school is closed through at least monday. on tuesday they hope to have the students relocated but have not said where that will be. live in the newsroom, amy

hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thanks. so what is tce? we have a full explanation up on our website, abc7news.com. you can also download the abc7 news app to get push alerts on the story right to your phone. a parolee charged with a violent crime in oakland will appear in court today. the 23-year-old was arrested last week in merced county. he's charged in the attack on february 10th. this video shows a 20-year-old man washing his car in his diamond district driveway when two men robbed him. police are looking for the second suspect. he's also a suspect in an armed robbery in richmond the same day. investigators say he shaved his beard and hair and was planning on leaving the state. the search for a missing couple in marin county has turned into a recovery mission. carol kiparsky and ian irwin from palo alto disappeared while on a hiking trip in inverness. the sheriff's office believes they would have found the couple

now if they were in an area accessible by foot or land. crews including the coast guard plan to search by boat, jet skis and helicopter and using drones throughout the weekend. rancho san antonio county park will reopen this morning after a mountain lion attack. a 6-year-old was hurt in the attack on sunday. officials say the mountain lion has been found and euthanized. warning signs have been put up around the park. building a better bay area means we need more housing and more people taking public transit. >> but when you build housing at transit something has to give. today that means parking gets tighter at one of b.a.r.t.'s busiest stations. if you use the millbrae station, get ready for some changes. anser hassan is live at that station. >> good morning, guys. the sign behind me explains it all. starting tonight millbrae b.a.r.t. will be cutting this parking lot. the millbrae transit center will

be built in this parking lot eliminating 300 parking spots. the transit center will include 400 apartments, 100 of which will be for low-income tenants. this b.a.r.t. station is popular because it has to much parking here. so they will be cutting 10% of the parking at this station. to help out, caltrans says they will have about 100 empty spaces at their broadway station where passengers can park and then take a free shuttle to the millbrae b.a.r.t. station. as for passengers, there's mixed reaction. louie valdez supports it because he says the bay area needs more housing. >> there will be more housing availability for people who need it. it's expensive on the peninsula. so it will be positive. short-term, difficulties. long-term positive effects. >> reporter: one thing to note during construction, more parking spots could be closed off until the

that area in san mateo. drive times for other parts of the bay area, walnut creek to dublin, nice quick ride at 14 minutes, santa rosa to san francisco, 49-minute ride. highway 1 to los gatos, 22 minute minutes. we want to take you back out here live. a bear has been sighted here in south califoria, it's been here for two days straight. this is a live picture from monrovia. the bear was spotted here around 2:30 this morning. as you can see, it's just strolling around the neighborhood. people said that it's been doing this for the last two days. it's been walking around. it's been chilling out, laying in peoples front lawns. we have not heard it injured anybody or anything like that. >> no. >> but every few hours people will see the bear. >> not having been to monrovia, i'm told by one of our viewers who grew up there, this is not an uncommon thing. that wildlife will come down to the neighborhood.

6:25 on a friday. this is the 24th day of not getting rain. 24th consecutive day and more is on the way. look at the gorgeous weather at the coast today. 66 at bodega bay, ocean beach, 67. around monterey bay, low 70s. san francisco-based lyft is stepping up its game to compete with uber. it's rolling out a pilot program that allows you to select a highly rated driver. it's called lyft preferred. it's a new type of ride for passengers who want to pay a little bit more for a newer car, more leg room and a top driver. there's no word yet on how much more the ride would cost, but lyft says drivers who participate will receive a bonus after each preferred ride. they're not your ordinary customers. >> horses were spotted at a mcdonald's

the coast. we hit spring fever-like numbers, low to mid 70stor the bay and inland neighborhoods. hi, jobina. >> hi, mike. i enjoyed your bear voices. in berkeley we have a crash between a big rig and one other car. it doesn't look like injuries have been reported here. this is westbound 80 before g ilman. you can expect a slowdown, but we'll continue to watch this for you. moving over to a live look at the golden gate bridge, we have smooth traffic this morning. no problems i'm seeing and no fog. down in the south bay, 87 looking good as well. >> thank you. new overnight, the chp is investigating a fatal crash involving a good samaritan. this crash happened just before 2:00 this morning on southbound 101 at 3rd street in san mateo. officers say a man got out to help a driver in a single vehicle collision that good

samaritan was struck and then killed by another vehicle. the chp says the driver in the initial crash suffered major injuries. he was taken to the hospital. investigators have not identified either driver. developing news this morning, san jose and morgan hill police are investigating a shooting involving two men. morgan hill police responded to calls of shots fired around 8:00 last night at crock rochran and mission view. they found multiple shell casings in the middle of the intersection but nothing else. that's when they got a call from san jose police about two gunshot victims. one is in critical condition. the other is in serious condition. now police are working on getting statements from the victims. the oakland police commission fired the city's police chief. commissioners say they lost confidence in anne kirkpatrick, who has been oakland police chief for the last three years. amy hollyfield has more on this. >> the mayor's spokesperson said

she will not be commenting today, she commented yesterday. i saw a comment on twitter saying as citizens we deserve a better explanation for this driver. the commission did not give specific reasons for the firing. commission chair regina jackson explained the termination was made without cause. the oakland police commission does have the authority to remove the police chief, that's under a voter approved ballot initiative voted back in in 2016. mayor libby schaaf hired her and the mayor was the one who told her she was fired. the commission said there have been notable successes under her leadership, but commissioners felt kirkpatrick was still lacking. >> there are a lot of improvements but the disparities won't to exist and there are a series of other issues that contributed to losing the confidence. we didn't think she was going to

be the most effective chief in oakland. >> i do not regret choosing chief kirkpatrick. and i believe there are many examples of ways that she served our city extremely well over these three years. but i must respect the authority and role of our independent police commission. >> the police union is not happy about this saying kirkpatrick was a well respected leader who was making significant progress and bringing stability to the opd. it goes on to say, the statement from the union, that police officers are disappointed in the actions of the police commission and the mayor. kirkpatrick is entitled to one-year's salary as severance, that's around $273,000. the mayor says the city will conduct a national search for a new chief. reporting live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. a new intelligence report says russia is interfering in the 2020 race trying to help the president get re-elected.

abc news confirmed the intelligence community warned bipartisan group of house lawmakers last week. the president believed democrats would use the information from the latest russia briefing against him. democrats overnight defended the congressional oversight. house intelligence committee chairman, adam schiff tweeted he's again jeopardizing ourests to stop foreign meddling, exactly as we warned he would do. >> thanks. there are a number of developments about coronavirus happening in the bay area. a diamond princess cruise ship evacuee who was quarantined at travis air force base is now in the hospital in san francisco. the person doesn't have symptoms but tested positive for the virus in japan. a santa clara county coronavirus patient has been released from home isolation after recovering from the illness. two other patients have been discharged from usf after they got treatment. humboldt county is reporting its first case.
