is heart broken. the man's long-time partner spoke with me through tears and she's trying to find the courage to find her young son dad has died. jose gar soia aguilar was making his way home from work, where his partner and the couple's 6-year-old son were waiting. >> he never answered, so i waited, and i woke up thinking that he was in there. >> reporter: aguilar wouldn't make it home. the driver of this black vehicle crashed into the median just north of the 3rd avenue exit. two other drivers hit the vehicle. a fourth driver, aguilar, stopped to help. >> he was always like that. he liked to help people. >> he put on his hazards, stopped, walked to the number one lane and got out of his vehicle trying to assist the other people broken down on the

of just how dry this february has been. we saw a grass fire off deer valley road today. lauren martinez is live and tells us a homeowner trying to get rid of rodents may be to blame here. >> reporter: fire officials say luckily no structures were threatened and no one injured. even though this vegetation fire was small, it quickly grew and it serves as a reminder of how early we are in fire season. time lapse video from walnut creek shows just how fast and far smoke from a vegetation fire west of brentwood could be seen. >> we got a report from a homeowner in the 9,000 block off of deer valley road of a small fire. >> reporter: that fire was sparked by a smoke bomb. officials say the homeowner was trying to get rid of ground rodents but set off what turned

into a seven-acre vegetation fire. officials want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of these dry conditions in february. >> with the lack of rain we've been having, and the very dry summer seasons we had last year, some of that longer grass on the steeper part of the hillside is still dry from last year. >> reporter: and so far, it has been a dry month. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking when or if we'll be seeing any rain any time soon. sandhya? >> i wish i could tell you we've got a big storm coming in, but i don't have that for you. take a look at the first 21 days of this month have been dry, with no measurable rain so far. over a month since we saw the last soaker. yeah, you are seeing some returns on radar. but most of this is pretty much evaporating before it hits the ground. we are tracking moisture that is spinning around. it has been producing definite

showers in the southern california area. as we take a look at a quick preview here, a shower or two or perhapses a few sprinkles here in the bay area not out of the question. i'll let you know if it will impact your weekend plans coming up. health officials expect to see more positive cases of coronavirus i mong the evacuated passengers from the cruise ship. at least 28 have it so far. and costa mesa has sued the government to stop the relocation of 25 to 35 >> the largest concerns that we have is the lack of information. there has not been an information flow and relative to the situation like that, this for us creates the greatest concern. a judge issued a restraining order to halt the transfers. california health officials are asking 7600 people who have

returned from china since february 2 to self-quarantine this month. in the east bay, air testing of a high school will begin tomorrow, after a cancer causing chemical was found in the ground water. according to local and state officials, there are several sites that could be the source of this. students and teachers don't know when they'll be going back, but classes may resume next week at alternative locations. the school year could be extended to make up for the missed days. new developments with a deadly fire that killed two firefighters at the library. two teenage boys are accused of setting the fire and they have been charged with murder and arson. the two died battling the blaze tuesday night. the two 13-year-olds pleaded not guilty in court today. they're scheduled to be back in court mid march. "abc7 news" is committed to

building a better bay area. one of the issues is b.a.r.t., enforcing the rules has been a hot topic. today, the police department showed how officers are doing, and if there are any racial despaisparities to worry about. our reporter spoke with the police chief and is live from the embarcadero station with his reaction. >> reporter: the official request for the data took place in december of 2019. now they looked into public intoxication inside b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. estimates it makes 129 million trips a year, and with more people riding the system than need, for improvements is top of mind for many riders. >> like a screen that says the station. >> reporter: and then there's this. >> sometimes even from bike security, they'll profile me, put me in a certain category. >> reporter: the b.a.r.t. director requested d eed

given an exclusive interview to "abc7 news," it's part of the originals documentary called "32 seconds, a deadly night in rome." dan noyes has this story. >> reporter: the story keeps building. it's been seven months since realtor heidi got a phone call from her husband who had taken her sons to italy. she had no idea her 18-year-old son was involved in a terrible fight with two police officers in rome. his friend stabbing one to death. >> he said, last night we saw on the news that gabriel and the guy he's visited in rome were arrested in connection with the killing of a police officer. >> what's going through your mind at that point? i can't imagine. >> i couldn't process it. >> reporter: the other young man from the bay area claims he stabbed the officer in self-defense, but both boys face

that. >> the weekend is looking good, but it's going to be changing. i want to show you live doppler 7. we're seeing more cloud cover across the bay area. not the north bay. and we're seeing some echoes there. now, all of this is what we call verga, moisture that's evaporating. there have been showers around monterey, just a few sprinkles and showers in southern california. those clouds that have been streaming in associated with the low made for a very colorful sunset tonight. from our emeryville camera, the sun went down at 5:54 md it was beautiful. highs today, despite the fact that we've had all the cloud cover today, the south wind pushed those temperatures up near 80 degrees in fairfield. 74 in santa rosa. 72 at kent wield. san francisco at 69. 67 in san jose. it was really warm for winter for this time of year. if you're looking for cooler weather, you got it. at least for a couple of days.

santa rosa's temperature, the average high is 62 degrees. the next few days, upper 60s. and then the numbers will bounce back well above average. the warmth returns. next week we're talking about 70s coming back into the picture. the visibility here is good. here's a look at the numbers. still very mild around oakland, hayward in the sikts. 58 in san francisco. isolated sprinkles are possible in the south bay in the morning. breezy and cooler weekend and sunny and warmer next week. i want to show you the forecast. around midnight, could be seeing a few sprinkles going into 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m. as you will notice. then the system pushes down towards southern california, and that's where most of the rain is going to remain along with some sierra snowfall south of the tahoe area. in terms of rainfall estimates, a few hundredths of an inch.
