financial markets, but some analysts saying this health emergency could have a long-term impact on the global economy. >> reporter: overnight, president trump confirming that americans with the new coronavirus will not be sent to a fema location in alabama. >> his wortsds are, that plan h been canceled. >> reporter: the decision coming after officials in alabama raised, quote, grave concerns about the government's plan to use the site just outside talladega for covid-19 positive passengers still aboard the "diamond princess" choose ship. >> this is going to spread everywhere else. they think that a face mask is going to help? >> reporter: meanwhile, the global toll of the virus spreading to financial markets. outputs have sent the stock market tumbling with the dow dropping more than 300 points overnight. in europe this morning, all train lines from austria to italy have been halted. >> there's kind of a lot of fear right now. >> reporter: italy is now the hardest hit country outside asia with more than 150 sick. at least a dozen towns on lockdown. italian airports screening

travelers. grocery store shelves already bare. >> some people are nervous because they don't know if they should maybe try to get out of milan. >> reporter: fears forcing venice to cancel its annual carnival, and fashion week in milan, deserted. this show by giorgio sealed. the other center of concern this morning, south korea. the country is now on red alert, the highest level for infectious diseases. the number of cases there now topping 600. about half of those have been linked to south korea's fourth largest city. and alabama isn't the only place in the u.s. where accepting patients has stirred controversy. a judge has issued a restraining order to stop the use of a facility in costa mesa. trump arrived this morning for a two-day visit. the president received what's being called a king's welcome orchestrated by the indian prime minister. crowds lined the streetsawaying

american flags as the president headed a massive rally packed with more than 100,000 people. preparations included a hastily-built wall that critics say was meant to block the view of a slum, keeping thousands of poor people out of sight. the trip which includes a visit to the taj mahal is aimed at smoothing over trade tensions and reaffirming the bond between the u.s. and india, the world's largest democracies. we turn now to the race for 2020, and the focus turning to south carolina. >> that's where former vice president joe biden is expected to pick up a key endorsement this week, but it's senator bernie sanders who has the momentum this morning, and now he's providing a price tag for one of his most controversial plans, medicare for all. abc's serena marshall has the latest from the campaign trail. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kenneth and mona, good morning to you. after months of this being a party with no clear front-runner, bernie sanders coming off that decisive weekend victory, now taking control of this race and the party. the nomination though likely to be determined within the next nine days. coming off a big nevada win,

bernie sanders embracing his new role as front-runner. at a rally in texas turning his focus on the general election. >> we are not only going to win here in texas on super tuesday. we're going to beat trump in november. >> reporter: young and latino democrats helping give sanders his nevada win, but lagging behind former vice president joe biden among older and black voters, a key demo in the next race, south carolina. where the state's democratic king maker congressman jim clyburn says some voters may be turned off by sanders' message. >> this is south carolina, and south carolinians are pretty leery about that title socialist. >> reporter: the website politico now reporting clyburn planning to endorse biden wednesday after the next debate. sanders' rivals also latching

onto the socialist part of his self-proclaimed democratic socialist title, saying sanders is not fit to be the standard bearer of the party. >> i don't think he can beat donald trump and keep a democratic senate or get a democratic senate and keep a democratic house. >> we have one shot to take on this president. let us take a sober look at what is at stake for our party, for our values and for those with the most to lose. >> reporter: with less than a week to go before the south carolina primary, sanders on "60 minutes," says he's prepared to fight back. >> what democratic socialism is about is saying, let's use the federal government to protect the interests of working families. >> reporter: sanders also providing a price tag for his medicare for all estimating it will cost about $30 trillion, but acknowledging he doesn't have a total figure for all of his proposals. >> no. you mentioned making public colleges and universities tuition-free and canceling all student debt, that's correct. that's what i want to do.

we pay for that through a modest tax on wall street speculation. i can't rattle off every nickel and every dime, but we have accounted for, you talked about medicare for all. we have options that will pay for it. >> reporter: sanders also during that interview defended some socialist policies of fidel castro's communist cuba. that could come back to haunt him in super tuesday and florida. that's happening next week. kenneth and mona? >> serena marshall, thank you. a tv host is facing backlash over his comments about sanders' win in nevada. chris matthews of msnbc compared sanders' win to the nazi invasion of france. >> i'm reading last night about the fall of france in the summer of 1940 and the general calls churchill and says, it's over. churchill says, how can it be? you've got the greatest army in europe. how can it be over? he said, it's over. so i have that suppressed

feeling. >> those remarks triggered calls for matthews to resign. he was criticized by a contributor on the same network who pointed out sanders had family members killed in the holocaust. police are investigating a shooting at a flea market in houston. the building where the market is held was hosting a dance event. police say a man claims his gun misfired, wounding one person in the leg. police say that bullet ricocheted possibly hitting six other people. the gun owner was taken into custody. in ohio, a massive fire in suburban cleveland. the video on your screen, flames destroyed this luxury condo building under construction in rocky river. high winds blew ash over interstate 90 forcing police to shut down a section of the highway. fortunately no one was hurt. turning to weather, parts of the south could see flooding today. meanwhile in central arizona this weekend, this family of five and their dog had to be rescued from the roof of their jeep after getting trapped in raging floodwaters. let's take a look now at your monday forecast.

>> good morning. we're tracking a storm moving through the plains into the midwest. this is going to bring heavy rainfall through the southeast, areas where we're still trying to clean up from that flooding last week. we'll have a couple of thunderstorms. fortunately nothing severe expected. behind that, a piece of energy dropping through the dakotas and snowshowers and colder air which will change the rain over to some snow across northern illinois. that snow persists through tuesday. some spots of the region could pick upwards of a foot of snowfall by wednesday. i'm accuweather meteorologist adam del rosso. coming up, we celebrate an american icon after her long battle with alzheimer's. but first, the daredevil killed while trying to launch a home-made rocket. plus, what happened when a 9-year-old boy asked presidential candidate pete buttigieg for advice on coming out as gay. and later, a former marine sets a world record.

and we are back now with a final rocket launch for a daredevil in the california desert. mad mike hughes made the rocket which suffered a malfunction as it was taking off. it flew into the sky and then crashed. hughes famously believed that was earth was flat. he was 64 years old. a wild shootout was caught on camera between the army and police officers in haiti. police are protesting for higher wages and better working conditions. the gun battle lasted more than two hours with bullets flying in the streets. the violence forced officials to cancel the carnival festival. at least one person was killed. more than a dozen were wounded. heaven is shining even brighter now, those words from the husband of barbara smith,

the lifestyle icon also known as b. smith. she died this weekend after battling early onset alzheimer's. smith was the first black woman ever featured on the cover of a traditionally white magazine. she also started three restaurants and launched a syndicated tv show. viola davis tweeted, smith epitomized class, true beauty and dignity. ava do you ever duvernay said she was one of a kind. a kind, and vivica fox called her a true queen. she was 70 years old. people are expected at today's memorial service honoring kobe bryant and his daughter, gianna. the final farewell for the lakers icon is being held at the staples center in los angeles, and will celebrate the lives of all nine people killed in last month's helicopter crash. ticket prices range from $24 to $224. of course, symbolic amounts because of the numbers bryant and his daughter wore. proceeds go to charity and other details about the service were not immediately disclosed.

desertion among other charges after defying a court order to physically produce her children. >> for the record, you understand that you have the right to call someone? >> yes. >> reporter: according to an affidavit obtained by abc news, when police conducted a welfare check on j.j. in november, vallow obstructed and delayed the investigation by lying to them, claiming j.j. was staying with a friend in arizona. authorities also say vallow told friends tylee was attending class at byu idaho, but authorities found no trace of her in the school records. vallow and chad daybell were tracked down in hawaii where they have been living ever since. daybell who was last seen praying during his wife's court appearance is the author of several religious books and has been linked to doomsday beliefs. >> can you tell me where your kids are? >> reporter: this morning, along this road in kauai, a home made sign displays the same urgent question being asked on this island and across the country,

where are the children? >> i'm very worried. she could be not alive. it's really scary. >> and police are also investigating the recent untimely deaths of family members of both daybell and vallow, including daybell's previous wife who died two weeks before he remarried. a couple in their 70s who survived eight days lost in the california woods is said to be in amazing spirits. carol kiparsky and ian irwin rented a cottage for valentine's day, but they got lost on a hike. after several days of freezing temperatures, officials gave up hope of finding them alive and changed the mission from rescue to recovery. >> we were searching the drainage from shallow beach. it was very tough going and very tough drainage. about halfway up, we hear voices. at first we thought it was another team, but then they started yelling, help. we looked at each other, and we were, like, that's them. >> that's them. the couple survived by eating plants and drinking from puddles. and we're hearing from nascar driver ryan newman for the first time since last week's crash at the daytona 500.

he released a statement saying, the outpouring of emotion has been truly humbling. he also revealed that he's been treated for a head injury, but suffered no internal injuries in that crash. the head of his racing team says newman's goal is to come back and win the nascar cup title. to baseball and a perfect one-handed catch at spring training. a fan grabbed that foul ball during the yankees/rays game. he ended up getting a big ovation for his effort. love it. an 84-year-old woman had the play of the game during the ole ss basketball game. take a look at this. she sank a 94-foot putt during a contest to win a brand-new car, and wait for it. here it goes. 94 feet, and then bam. that crowd went wild. she also got a hug from tony the land shark. knock knock, who is it? land shark. up next in "the pulse," a whole new way to eat mayonnaise.
