watch obviously. police say they are investigating what you see here, images of a senior citizen being robbed and assaulted in san francisco. really disturbing. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. thanks for joining us. the images are difficult to stomach. the video was posted by several accounts on social media. thinking happened on aciola lane in the bayview district. dion lim is covering the story. this is not the first time something like this has happened in that neighborhood, it? >> no, it is not. in 2015, maybe you'll remember there was a case where there was no chinese graffitied in five different areas, including the bayview. in 2017, a woman was the victim of a hate crime and pushed off a muni platform. this latest incident involving an older asian man being attacked and bullied has outraged thousands online, and the city is now responding. >> oh, he is scared, og. >> reporter: it's a disturbing video that has gotten worldwide attention.

video posted to instagram showing an older asian man in san francisco's bayview neighborhood collecting empty cans, being confronted, assaulted and humiliated by a man as others watch. >> the video is very disgusting to see elder abuse that was taking place. >> reporter: bayview district supervisor walton condemned the incident monday, vowing to continue efforts to implement programs, like expanding the vision zero plan to combat violence in neighborhoods, and lobbying for more resources to unify communities. >> we're actually working on bringing on somebody internally that can work with our office to coordinate how we respond and prevent and intervene in violence. >> reporter: also part of the solution, the city's community ambassadors program formed in 2010 in response to two high profile racially motivated attacks on asian seniors. members of the multilingual team we spoke to in nearby visitacion valley wish they had been

present and scheduled to work on weekends. do you think that would have helped in this situation? >> yes, i think so. if johnny, who speaks chinese on my team, maybe he could have been there to talk to him to let him know what was going on and possibly help him get out of there. >> while racial slurs can be heard in the video, san francisco police have not yet called the incident a hate crime. they're investigating and attempting to locate and identify the victim and witnesses. offers to help the victim and his family financially, they are pouring in from all over the world. but those funds can't be given out until that victim is identified. once again, sfpd encourages those who know anything about the incident to call their anonymous tip line. live in the newsroom, dion lim, abc7 news. >> okay, dion, thanks. breaking news in castro valley. that's where highway patrol officers are looking for a driver who left the scene after hitting a 12-year-old girl. sky 7 flew above that scene at

sky 7 and manta road. the girl was in a crosswalk when a pickup truck struck her just before 3:30 this afternoon. about an hour and a half ago. the victim suffered very serious injuries. chp officers tell us they're looking for a black chevrolet truck, and that pickup appears to be lifted, meaning it has a special suspension system. developing news. silicon valley's water supply could be taking a hit in the name of earthquake safety. federal regulators have ordered anderson reservoir, the largest in the county to be drained by august 1. federal dam inspectors found the reservoir pose as risk of collapse during a strong earthquake. the water district is now exploring getting other sources of water from outside of the county. the mcclymonds high school campus in oakland is still off limits to students and staff as air testing continues for a cancer-causing chemical. abc7 news reporter kris reyes has the story now on when the campus could reopen.

>> today we were angry as well. we didn't really get anywhere. >> reporter: bea hendricks just attended a meeting for mcclymonds's parents. many of them worry about more than just the safety of her kids. her son is a junior at the school, plays football, but right now he is home without sports. >> the scouts look into your grades and what you've been doing your junior year because they want to know if they even want to talk to you your senior year. >> classes are set to resume at three different locations. ninth gradelers go to ralph bunche. tenth and 11th to west oakland middle, and 12 gridders to westlake middle. >> we do have cushion built in to make sure we get them educated. meantime our students have been doing work at home. >> mcclymonds will remain closed as air testing on property continues. final results are expected at the end of the week. preliminary tests from the weekend showed zero levels of tce throughout the school. but with two student deaths from cancer in recent years, parents are skeptical. >> we're hesitant to allow them to go back because we're not

sure, like i said, again, what are the acceptable levels of this. >> the school shut down last week after tce was found in groundwater near the school. officials have yet to trace where it came from, but there are several hazardous waste sites in west oakland. >> we know there is all kinds of distrust, and rightfully so. this is a situation where people of color, poor people have always frankly gotten the shaft in our country. and we need to change this. >> now another meet willing be taking place for parents here at west oakland middle school in about a half hour or so. they do hope to keep the students busy this week with field trips. school officials tell me they hope to have mcclymonds open by next monday. in oakland, kris reyes for abc7 news. >> okay, kris, thanks a lot. in the south bay, santa clara county supervisors are expected to approve funding that would help make homes safer. that money would be dedicated to a county gun team. their target making sure people with domestic violence, restraining orders don't have

firearms. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen explains how that would work. >> reporter: in santa clara county, a new law enforcement team could soon be created to help identify and remove firearms from gangster, felons, or those who are the subject of domestic violence restraining orders. >> although we remain overall safe, we're dealing with a problem that if we don't get our hands around it, we're going to continue to see carnage and devastation. >> this week, county supervisors could vote on a plan to add five new members to the district attorney's crime strategies unit, including a dedicated prosecutor and investigator using a combination of general funds and grant money. >> the goal is to keep the victim as far away from the perpetrator as possible. it shouldn't be up to the victim to resay i think the person still has firearms. >> last june san jose police responded to a quadruple murder/suicide driven by a family dispute in what would become one of the deadliest shootings in city history. the gunman was a convicted felon who was barred from having a firearm. aggravated assaults have been on

getting to bart is getting tougher. the transit agency is working to eliminate parking in order to build housing. but will it make it more difficult for commuters to find a spot for their cars? that's a question chronicle insider phil matier asked bart's general manager. >> you know something? we don't talk about a lot in bart is parking. >> yeah. >> now you guys are building housing all around these bart parking stations, and people feel like one, they're losing parking, and second, the parking permanent process to get a permanent to park at a bart station is off the charts. >> yeah. well, i would say that there is probably no better agency suited right now to help deal with the affordable housing crisis than bart. and developing bart property with housing and complete communities, that's part of the

solution for the affordable housing crisis. and we will look at it. each one of those locations, we'll do an access study and see how much parking replacement is needed there. >> all right. but it always seemed to be less than what was there before. >> it does. but, again, it's right adjacent to a bart transit. >> but wouldn't more people take bart if they could drive to bart and know there was a parking spot for them? >> i think it's on a case-by-case basis. there are stations that are auto-dependent. antioch, we're putting in parking out at antioch. and there are stations at berkeley and el cerrito that we're looking at development there's. and we'll do an access study. >> how much of a tension is there between the city use and the suburban use? >> yeah, i think there is a healthy back and forth. and i think it actually is a good thing because it helps us to land at the right decision. certainly, you know, the suburban and parking and urban and less parking, but i think

that back and forth helps us get to where we need to get. >> and phil's conversation with bart general manager bob powers continues on abc7 news at 6:00. he'll be asking bart what they're doing to keep stations clean. you can, of course, read phil matier's column in "the san francisco chronicle" on wednesdays and sundays. community groups in san francisco have a plan of their own after a developer scrapped a proposal for a historic complex in the mission district. seven years ago maximus real estate announced plans to build a 331 unit market housing development at 16th and mission. mission housing announced today that maximus is selling the land. the housing nonprofit now wants to buy it and build an affordable housing complex instead. filming for "the matrix" is making san francisco's financial district look more like a war zone. this is new video of the movie production overnight. check it out.

low-flying helicopters flew around the ferry building and explosions lit up the night sky. it's all dramatic stuff. the chronicle said people could hear the blasts from miles away. san jose you're at 67 degrees. compared to 24 hours ago, running 13 degrees warmer in san carlos and in livermore, and up 7 degrees in napa. so definitely in a warmer pattern. and as we check out the temperature trend going into tomorrow, around 9:00, you're going start off in the 50s, 60s. take your lunch outside. look at the weather. it is going to be absolutely mild at noontime. 60, 70s, and around the afternoon hours, you're going to be looking at mostly 70s. just like today, temperatures are going run well above average for this time of year. a live look right now from our emeryville camera as we look towards the golden gate bridge. it is definitely a sunny skew. here is a look at why we are really possibly going to go into record territory. we've had no measurable rain here in the bay area the entire month of february. so here are some of the record lowest february rainfall totals. santa rosa .08 in 1953. oakland, .21 in 1995.

san francisco had no measurable rain in 1864. and san jose only had .02 in 1953. right now it look likes we're going to close out february on a dry note. but perhaps on march 1 we may be looking at wet weather. just a few passing clouds as we look from our san jose camera. clear overnight. gusty in the hills. above average temps for the workweek with record highs certainly possible. here is a look at the temperatures in the morning. 40s, 50s. the fog will be off the coastline. for the afternoon, you're looking at 67 in the city. 76 san rafael. low 80s for cloverdale, 76 in napa. 75 in concord. 71 in oakland. up to 74 san jose and livermore. i do want to show you the california warmth. it's not going to be bay area wide. redding at 60s, 70s, even los angeles in the 70s the next three days. so we're waiting for that rain. and right now it looks like sierra will see some snow. maybe a slight chance of a few showers. this is just one model. sunday morning that system is going into southern california,

now to consumer news and the new effort to keep families together when flying. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here with more on that. this is a huge issue. >> we've talked about it quite a bit out here. consumer reports has launched a petition to stop major domestic airlines from charging families to sit together. often aisle and window seats cost more. so to get the best deal, families must be separated when flying. consumer reports doesn't think

that is fair and is asking consumers to sign an online petition drive that urges american, delta, and united airlines to give families a break and not charge them more for sitting together. consumer reports had wanted to gather 50,000 signature. and at last check just a couple of hours ago, fewer than 1500 signatured were needed to meet that goal. "the wall street journal" is reporting that walmart and target are adding more self-checkout machines each time a store is remodeled. even costco is beginning to add the self-serve lines. one of the big sticking points is the weight sensors. customers don't like them. so now stores are experimenting with video cameras, keeping track of the items bought at self-checkouts. the u.s. bureau of labor statistics, i checked today. it says the median pay for cashier is just more than $22,000 a year, and expects there to be 4% fewer of them around in a decade because of
