police in the east bay searching for a hit-and-run driver who took the life of a 12-year-old girl. >> the biggest reservoir to be drained all because of a dangerous threat. dozens of bart employees taking home six-figure overtime caps. abc 7 news starts right now. now news to build a better bay area from abc 7. >> reporter: dozens of bart workers are taking home six-figure overtime checks. a bart board member wants answers. >> it's a very visceral, relatable concern about who's minding the store. >> reporter: the i-team found one bart employee worked 361 days in one year. reporter, melanie woodrow looked as why bart doesn't just hire more people. >> bart provided us with the 2018 compensation for all employees.

certain departments and employees stood out as receiving more overtime pay than others. we asked bart why. they say thav move up to 430,000 people a day. >> it's a very complex organization and sometimes we have to pay overtime. >> reporter: they paid one employee more than $172,000 in overtime. in some cases overtime pay was nearly twice an employee's regular pay. >> reporter: why is there so much overtime pay? >> we're proud of the fact our employees are willing to go the extra mile and give the work needed to make sure it goes. >> reporter: the person who opens and closes the station, provides passengers information and deals with emergencies. one of the station agents in 2018 worked 361 out of 365 days at more than 40 different

stations, making more than $114,000 in overtime. >> i don't think 361 day as year is good for an employee. i don't think it's great for an agency. >> reporter: he's on bart's board of directors. >> it's a very real, visceral, relatable concern about who's minding the store. >> reporter: bart's deputy general manager wouldn't answer questions about individual employees. why not hire more employees to cutback on some of the overtime pay? >> in almost every case it's more financially sound for the district to pay an employee overtime than to hire an additional head count. if you have one person working overtime, you're paying one pension, paying for one family of health care, verses if you hire a person, you're paying double that. >> from a dollars and cents

standpoint, you can make a case that overtime costs less. i think from a morale standpoint and the public perceptions standpoint is in the fact these are good jobs. they're middle class jobs that enable people to live in the bay area, i would air on the side of expanding our personnel. >> reporter: in 2018 some departments paid more in overtime than others. vehicle trouble deck. one technician made nearly $162,000 in overtime, almost twice their regular pay. add that in and more than $253,000. also police operations. remember the bart employee that made more than 172,0$172,000 in overtime? at in regular pay more than $279,000. >> we hired over 63 officers last year alone and on track to have a fully staffed police

force before the end of the year. >> reporter: for all the good they're doing around public safety issues, he doesn't want to see something like overtime pay set the agency back. >> year out there doing the right thing and then this comes along and i go oh. it's part of life as a bart director. >> reporter: bart tells the station ageent who worked 361 days in 2018 is still a bart employee but not working at any station. they would not say why. and they're in the process of compiling compensation data but doesn't have a firm timeline of when it will be repeated. and all this week we're dedicating our building a boater bay area to bart. on to developing news in the east bay, police are searching for suspected hit-and-run driver who took the life of a young girl.

>> a neighbor shared this security camera image of a truck that hit the 1year-old. >> abc 7 news reporter is live with the story tonight. cornell. >> reporter: yeah, that tragedy happened this afternoon. that 12-year-old and her sister walking home from school in this cross walk when please say a male driver struck a girl and kept knowing. >> it's terrible. we should have the right for your children to learn how to walk. >> reporter: reacting to news a neighbor was struck and killed in this crosswalk. >> we determined it's a 12-year-old girl walking in the crosswalk with her sister struck by a black ford f-150 pick up truck. that truck subsequently fled the scene. >> reporter: a neighbor's security camera captured this image moments before the accident. witnesses told investigators the truck was headed west and turned

left on to crow canyon where the girl was struck? >> we stopped, we looked back and then took off. >> reporter: and the kids noticed the truck when they were walking home from school. >> my daughter says it's a ford and my son says the tires were more than half his size. it was a truck they'd never seen before. >> reporter: a suspect driver still at large. two sisters who believe they were safe in this crosswalk. >> they did everything right. they waited for the crosswalk signal, started crossing when they were allowed to and individual made a few bad choices, which severely impacted a lot of people's lives tonight. >> reporter: chp following leads tonight. they obtained video from home security cameras. abc 7 news. >> thank you. now to breaking news in san francisco where a wild story has ended with a car suspended of running over at least two people

in the hate ash bury neighborhood. the driver had been seen run p yelling threats. a man behind a wheel and a woman behind the passenger but officers caught up to the pair. we're told one officer has nonlife threatening injuries. the freeds are ordering the biggest reservoir to be drained because of earthquakes. it's east of highway 101. that's >> reporter: they are ready to see something done about the safety risks. so, the feds are now demanding, ordering that reservoir be drained. and that process starts by october 1st.
