fears over the spread sent the dow plunging more than 1,000 points. investors concerned over global economic production and supply with china producing nearly a quarter of the world's manufactured goods. >> there is some fear creeping into the markets now. >> reporter: outside china the covid-19 virus spreading person to person. americans told to avoid all nonessential travel to south korea as cases surge. in milan models walking the runway to an empty room. abc's james longman is in italy. >> reporter: this is the police line. beyond here are the 12 towns that are on lockdown and take a look. on google maps you can see every way in is shut down. >> reporter: here at home the number of coronavirus cases rising to 53. officials from the cdc, hhs, state department and homeland security are heading to capitol hill later today to brief a bipartisan group of lawmakers. part of that briefing will be classified. in the meantime, asian markets are continuing to see losses. in japan they fell 3% this morning. kenneth, mona.

>> all right, serena, thank you. there's a lot of focus on what's being done to stop this coronavirus and an experimental vaccine for the disease developed in massachusetts is now being sent to the government researchers. "the wall street journal" reports the first human tests could begin by the end of april with initial results possible this summer. breaking overnight, a deadly shooting at a community center near st. louis. police say a gunman walked into the building then shot and killed a woman. people ran for cover hiding in closets and workout rooms. a police officer exchanged fire with the shooter whose motive is still unclear. police say the gunman is in the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. and we turn now to disgraced movie producer harvey weinstein in the hospital overnight after a jury convicted him of rape. >> he was being transported to rikers island jail when he was suddenly rerouted to the hospital. moments after being convicted of rape and sexual assault, a judge ordered harvey weinstein to rikers island in new york. but he was diverted strapped to a stretcher in his suit and sent

to the hospital after complaining of chest pains. >> we just heard before coming on that he was experiencing some high blood pressure and some heart palpitations. >> reporter: this morning his defense team says it will appeal the verdict after a jury found weinstein guilty of the third degree rape of jessica mann in 2013 and guilty of sexually aqualitying mimi haleyi in 2006. >> he is a vicious sexual predator who used his power to threaten, rape, assault, trick, humiliate and silence his victims. >> reporter: the former movie mogul appeared stunned by the jury's decision as he was lifted out of his seat. >> he looked at me and said i'm innocent. he's like, i'm innocent. he's like, how could this happen in america? >> reporter: the jury acquitted weinstein on two counts of predatory sexual assault which carried a possible life sentence as well as a charge of first degree rape but is still facing a possible 25 years in prison when he is sentenced next month.

>> i was surprised to hear that harvey weinstein was surprised at the verdict today and that he was saying, i'm innocent, i'm innocent. harvey, i can tell you this, you were presumed innocent unless and until you were proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. that happened today. so you are no longer legally innocent. >> reporter: more than 80 women have accused weinstein of sexual misconduct. survivors and activists are calling it a moment of reckoning for the me too movement. the organization releasing a statement saying the verdict is proof no one is above the law, not even those with power, money or visibility. this case reminds us that sexual violence thrives on unchecked power and privilege. actress annabella sciorra who accused weinstein of raping her in the 1990s said her testimony against him was painful but necessary. adding in a statement, for in speaking truth to power we pave the way for a more just culture, free of the scourge of violence

against women. the d.a. saying this case shattered myths about sexual violence, including myths that it only happens in dark alleys caused by someone you don't know. advocates say they hope this case signals a new era in criminal justice. >> i think this case may lead to a better understanding of rape, how it can happen, when it can happen, to whom it can happen and that could embolden prosecutors and victims to come forward more and take more chances in prosecuting cases that maybe ten years ago prosecutors would have thought, they couldn't win. they couldn't win. >> weinstein's lawyers are hoping to get him released from jail while the appeals process plays out. he still faces felony charges in los angeles. coming up on "good morning america," a live interview with one of his victims, mimi haleyi. new details in the case against opera singer placido domingo. a union investigation found what's being described as a clear pattern of abuse and misconduct. domingo is accused of

harassing and sexually abusing several women. investigators now say more than two victims and witnesses have come forward. domingo responded overnight apologizing for his actions. in central germany police are trying to determine why a man drove a car into a crowd at a busy carnival injuring 30 people including children. some injuries are life-threatening. the driver had reportedly been drinking. germany has been on high alert since a shooting spree last week by a gunman who allegedly had far right views. turning to the weather, chicago and parts of the midwest are bracing for the biggest snowstorm of the season. let's take a look now at your tuesday forecast. >> good morning. snow showers decreasing across the plains for today, however, we will have more developing as you get into the midwest as we head through tonight and into our day tomorrow. snow persisting allowing for 6 to 12 inches of accumulation across northern illinois into central michigan.
