>> okay. thanks very much. outrage and a lot of support for the man being seen humiliated and attacked while collecting cans in the bay view neighborhood. police are still looking for the victim and other people seen in the video. chris reyes has the latest on the investigation. chris? >> reporter: good afternoon. today we pay a visit to a recycling center where this man may have been a regular. police are asking for the community's help to identify him. one state senator is asking for this to be investigated as a possible hate crime. >> the video first posted on instagram almost needs no explanation. a man in obvious distress as he is attacked and chased down in the bay view district while he collects cans. at this recycling center nearby, police are looking at surveillance video to try to find the victim. >> i see hundreds of faces every day.

american was part of the reason for the attack. >> reporter: police say no word on what the suspect or suspects could be facing. the a nnonymous tip line is available to call. san rafael police have issued a warning about a scam. someone called the couple yesterday and told they will their grandson had been arrested for dmp ui and needed to be bade out. they gave money to a man claiming to be a bail bondsman. when the grandson called later, he said he had never been arrested. always contact police if you feel you may be the '50 victim a scam. they're crafty. in the even bay, family and friends are mourning the loss of a 12-year-old girl killed by a

hit-and-run driver in castro valley. today the suspect turned himself in. the abc news reporter david louie is live at the scene of the crash where the girl's friends and family have been gathering all day. >> reporter: there has been a stead y stream of mourners. many have dispersed now but they've left lots of flowers to remember the 12-year-old girl who died here. this is man chp officers say has left an entire community grieving. 24-year-old joshua byrne of hayward turned himself in at the chp castro valley this morning of the. >> he has been charged with hit and run and vehicular manslaughter at this time. >> reporter: the 12-year-old lana carlos was killed as she and her sister were walking home from school monday afternoon. chp says it has video of this white pickup truck striking them as it made a left turn.

the driver didn't stop. >> he found it hard to turn himself in. it was just a matter of time before we got him. >> reporter: again, they said he didn't show remorse and wasn't willing to answer questions. this case has been especially difficult for first responders because several have kids who went to school with lana. >> itton takes one person making the wrong decision. >> reporter: the friends and family are grieving along with friends, they formed a prayer circle along the side of the road. >> she was a sweet, sweet little angel shelf touched everyone's life. she's very close to god. she carried the bible around in her backpack. >> reporter: castro valley is a closely knit community. >> when this happens, it is very tragic and i feel bad for the family. everybody needs to take care of each other and slow down.
