davis medical center. we're told employees have been told to stay home, a small group, to stay home and monitor their temperature. how this patient contracted coronavirus still a big mystery. >> torrid brown visiting his brother is surprised to learn the hospital is treating a patient who may be the first person in the country to have contracted coronavirus from community exposure. the patient was transferred from a hospital there. the california department of public health said the individual had no known exposure to the virus with a known infected inindividual. so what does it mean that someone has caught the virus without being in contact with a known patient? we spoke with u.c. berkeley public health. >> there is an individual in our community exposed to someone who

may have been somewhat symptomatic, certainly not enough to put them in a hospital or maybe someone who didn't have symptoms but was carrying the virus and could potentially spread it. >> since we've had such limited availability of the testing and they needed to meet such strict criteria to be tested, we have not found out about these community transmission cases before. >> we saw this employee wearing a face mask. he says he's very concerned about the patient in quarantine. >> people make jokes about it all the time but i didn't know it was that serious. that's in sacramento. >> reporter: boss baecause the patient didn't meet cdc criteria, the test was not initially given. precautions were taken the moment that patient arrived. president trump today named vice president mike pence to head up the u.s. response to the virus.

that's why the concern. new developmes in a deadly shooting rampage. the gunman had been fired from the brewery today. he returned and murdered five employees. the 51-year-old shooter then killed himself. he plans to keep the facility closed for the time being. san francisco police have identified the victim in the video that has outraged people around the world. >> it was a horrific image we saw in the video. >> they've identified the man in the video, an elderly asian man clearly in the district. >> was no other law enforcement agency on the video. >> reporter: that after the second video emerged showing the attack from a different angle.

in it, they allegedly stand by and do nothing to help the man. the company's ceo says the matter is under investigation. local leaders say they hope the video doesn't create divisions between asian and african-americans in the neighborhoods. >> we should not make a blanket statement or assertion that there is mounting tensions. >> reporter: mayor london breed and other local leaders will be addressing the issue again when they come together for a community healing event in the neighborhood where the assault happened. in san francisco. in the south bay a man is lucky to be alive after riding his lawn mower over five lanes of freeway traffic. this shows them during rush hour tuesday. amanda del castillo captured the man in the neighborhood. >> reporter: he never imagined

tried to protect him. >> they took santana to the hospital where he later passed away. the cause of the fire was accidental. the report also notes there were four mounting [ ets for smoke detectser, one on the second floor landing and one on each bedroom. but none on the mountain brackets. fire investigators say three of the four smoke detecters were found in a kitchen drawer without their batteries. >> we have repeated written requests kept by the housing authority's own data base showing she made multiple requests to have the electrical issues dealt with and gave them permission to enter the unit when she wasn't there. >> according to one of the work orders, an electrician went the next day, april 1st and was unable to inter. the work order was marked completed the same day, even

though the notes on the report say no next to do all smo detecters work. >> there was plenty of time to return before the fire killed two people. >> reporter: and the attorney who represented the san frich francisco housing authority says the electrician, quote, went back two more days and refused entry into the apartment. tenant whose do not follow the rules can, at times, create hazards and dangers to themselves. this was sadly one of those situations. they dug into heard's data from 2014 through 2019. we looked at inspections for 285 housing complexes across the bay area. 165 were sited for smoke it d tecter problems at least wuns and 28 were sited for smoke detecter problems on three out

of three inspekctions including sunny dale valesco. including 59 and as low as 35 in 2017. 90% of the bay area's 69 properties sited for smoke detecter issues more than twice were also overdo for an inspection, including sunny dale velasco. it was over do by 151 days, despite the fatal fire just a few years prior. and the spokesperson for heard region nine writes, quote, in a large majority of the instances where smoke detoekter inefficiencies were there, they t was removed by the resident boy removing the badry, however u.s. secretary of housing, ben carson, admits the inspection process has been troubled. >> when i dime heard, the place, quite frankly, was a mess.

there's a lot of this that had have be corrected and they're not corrected overnight. and it needs to care for the people. >> the sunny dale va va va va va is -- they've submitted $8 million to help bring existing housing units up to housing quality standards until all residential units have been replaced with new units. and welcome changes for at least one san francisco family. she reached a housing following the 2014 fire, which did not include any admission of wrong doing. >> okay. well, let's move on and talk about the weather forecast as we inch closer to the weekend.
