as a precaution. >> meanwhile, financial markets are on edge after stocks dropped for a third consecutive day. >> abc's andrew dymburt begins our coverage in washington where vice president mike pence is now leading the response effort. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and it is not a matter of if but when it starts to spread more rapidly here in the united states according to health officials. one of the latest cases had no known travel or contact with anyone else who has coronavirus while a battle over how to handle it is brewing on capitol hill. as clusters of coronavirus continue to spread around the globe, here at home the united states is wrestling with how to prepare for an outbreak on american soil. >> and the number one priority from our standpoint is the health and safety of the am patient in california contracted coronavirus with no known travel or exposure to another infected patient believed to be thesuch .

the president alongside his top health advisers trying to reassure the country but downplaying the danger wednesday. he tapped vice president mike pence to lead the u.s. response to the virus while asking congress for at least $2.5 billion to stop the spread. >> we've been working with the hill very, very carefully, very strongly and i think we have very good bipartisan spirit for money. >> reporter: democrats and even some republicans say it's not enough. >> what he's doing is late, too late, anemic. hopefully we can make up for the loss of time. >> reporter: airports around the world are doing all they can to prevent and prepare. at l.a.x. crews disinfecting surfaces after a korean air lines flight attendant who worked on flights at the airport tested positive for the virus. in korea a u.s. soldier has come down with covid-19, the military ordering additional screenings of all service members. and in italy coronavirus cases surging while back in the u.s., health experts say not to expect

a vaccine any time soon. >> we can't rely on a vaccine over the next several months to a year. >> reporter: and with that latest case in california, that brings the total number of coronavirus cases here in the u.s. to 60. kenneth, kimberly. >> andrew, thank you. we have much more on the virus emergency, and coming up, should travelers from europe be screened at u.s. airports, plus the concern about drug shortages and a warning to men with facial hair. those details in less than 15 minutes. we turn now to the other big story this morning, the workplace rampage in milwaukee. >> five people were killed when a man opened fire at the moulson coors beer company. officials say it is the saddest day in the company's 165 years in that city. this morning tragedy at a milwaukee landmark. >> never seen anything like this. >> reporter: police say an employee opened fire at the old miller brewing headquarters, now the moulson coors company

killing five co-workers before turning the gun on himself. >> this miller brewing site has been part of the miller family and part of the city of milwaukee for 165 years, and this is the saddest day that we have had. >> reporter: more than 1,000 people were working at the sprawling beer plant wednesday afternoon when the gunman started shooting. employees were evacuated along with neighboring schools as police searched more than 20 buildings on the company's campus. >> i was afraid for my dear life with my baby. >> i came over as quick as i could. seeing if i could get them out of here. >> reporter: this worker says he walked away from the gunman to talk to someone else seconds before the shooter pulled out his gun. >> if i wouldn't have gone to talk to this guy, believe me, i'd be one of them guys. and i know that for a fact because i would have walked right into what was going on. >> reporter: the state's lieutenant governor says this is the 11th mass shooting in wisconsin since 2004. >> we shouldn't accept this. this is not the way that things should be and we should never grow comfortable in the face of these repeated tragedies all

across america and especially right here at home. >> there were five individuals who went to work today, and they thought they were going to go to work, finish their day and return to their families. they didn't, and tragically they never will. >> the names of the victims and shooter have not been released. despite early reports about a motive police have not confirmed why the shooter opened fire. the mother of two missing children from idaho says she's eager to return home so she can defend herself against child abandonment charges. lori vallow appeared in court in hawaii where she waived extradition and also asked for a reduction in her $5 million bail but the judge denied her request. idaho police say vallow abandoned her two kids. they have not been seen since september. in the race for 2020, former vice president joe biden is heading into the south carolina primary with a big lead in the latest poll. he has an 18-point lead over businessman steyer who spent millions on tv ads. biden has also won the coveted

endorsement of representative jim clyburn, the highest ranking african-american in congress. >> i know joe. we know joe, but most importantly joe knows us. >> that's right. >> i promise you this, if you send me out of south carolina with a victory, there will be no stopping us. >> reporter: senator elizabeth warren also got a little help courting the black vote. singer john legend sang a couple of his hits and praised warren during a rally at south carolina state university, a historically black college. >> wouldn't it be wonderful to have a woman who came from humble beginnings, worked her way through college and law school and ascended all the way to become a harvard law professor, a u.s. senator then president of the united states? wouldn't that be magnificent? >> so i'm elizabeth warren, and i'm the woman who is going to beat donald trump.

we are back with one hungry hippo wandering into this gas station in south africa. he came from a nearby lake after grazing around town. locals say hippos often come out of the water after sunset looking for food. and a new twist in the college admissions scandal. lawyers for actress lori loughlin and her husband say newly revealed evidence shows their clients are innocent. prosecutors have turned over notes from the iphone of rick singer. he is the admitted ringleader of the scheme.

loughlin's lawyer claimed the notes show that fbi agents pressured singer to lie and say parents knew they were paying bribes to the school rather than making legitimate donations. loughlin is accused of paying $500,000 to get her daughters into usc. she's among more than a dozen parents fighting the charges. the trial of u.s. college students accused of murdering a police officer in rome is under way. police say natale hjorth and finnegan elder were caught on video running away after they stole a backpack then demanded cash and drugs for its return. later during a scuffle with an unarmed plainclothes officer, they say elder stabbed 1 of them 11 times. >> i believe he was bold enough to go and set up a meeting to get his money back after being cheated and i believe that he

did not know that finn had the knife that evening with him. >> if they're convicted both students face life in prison. five suspected neo-nazis arrested in five different states accused of threatening journalists in others. officials say the suspects are members of a group that ran hate camps and took part in military-style training. the alleged leader was charged in connection with several s.w.a.t.'ing incidents, traffic calls that targeted a university, a church and a news organization. a risky rescue for police in bridgeport helping save a woman in this burning car. they pushed the car upright and one officer broke a window and pulled her out to safety. the cause of the crash remains unclear, and the woman was treated at the hospital. one airline wants to give its economy class customers a chance to rest well on long flights. air new zealand is developing sleeping pods for coach. they're more like bunk beds. each triple decker bed can sleep six, but you'll have to pay an extra fee, of course. they could be available by next year. >> i'll take that. >> me too. coming up, turkeys on the attack. how one police officer fought c

look like ghost towns because of the coronavirus outbreak. delta has become the first airline to offer travel waivers for those traveled to fly to italy where the virus has killed at least 12 people and infected hundreds. >> i was quite surprised. >> reporter: and now growing concerns about who is being checked in airports in the u.s. this man says he wasn't screened after landing at new york's jfk airport. he flew in from milan not far from where towns are on lockdown. >> it was a surprise that there wasn't any control, that that is, you know -- especially because we fly from milan. >> reporter: there's already a shortage of medical masks with some stores limiting how many people can buy. and the cdc is now warning that some beards and mustaches may not allow the face masks to properly protect against the coronavirus because the masks rely on a tight seal to achieve maximum protection. >> they wear it too long. they rub their nose underneath it or they take it off to make a phone call and then put it back on.

all these make the protectiveness of the mask much less efficient. >> reporter: also a concern, shortages of products that originate in china including pharmaceutical drugs. u.s. officials say they're closely monitoring 20 chinese made drug products that could run into supply problems. coca-cola says production of diet soda is being delayed because of a shortage of artificial sweetener from china and microsoft says the outbreak is hurting supplies more than expected warning investors the company will not meet expectations for the third quarter. but the virus is having a positive impact on at least one company. >> peloton is for anyone. >> reporter: shares of the popular exercise bike peloton are skyrocketing. investors betting that more people will opt to skip the gym and exercise at home instead. and amazon is reportedly warning third party retailers about price gouging. in some cases the price of medical masks have quadrupled on the site. one of the stars of the tv show "shark tank"

has fallen victim to a major scam. barbara corcoran says her bookkeeper got what appeared to be an email from her assistant about paying for work done on a real estate property, but the email was actually sent by a scammer who had changed one letter of an email address. corcoran says she lost nearly $400,000 and likely can't get it back. >> this morning i wired $388,000 into a false bank account in asia. why did i do it is what i want to ask myself. i realized immediately it's something i would have fallen for if i had seen the emails. >> corcoran's team traced the original scam emails back to a chinese ip address. experts say you can protect yourself by making sure similar emails are from people you trust and by watching your bank statements. injured nascar driver ryan newman got a hero's welcome during a special visit. newman received a standing ovation during his first trip back to his racing team shop since his fiery crash at the daytona 500. newman suffered a head inj that crash. it's not clear when he'll race again. a high school wrestler in

fear of being racially profiled. that's something that the system has to work on. black riders make up 1 in 10 b.a.r.t. riders but they received half of all quality of life citations in 2019. we're told the b.a.r.t. police chief will address what appears to be the systemic issue at a meeting later today and presenting a plan to fix the problem. these citations were for what b.a.r.t. considers quality of life violations, fare evasion, loud music, things like eating or smoking on the train. b.a.r.t. officers have been trained on avoiding racial profiling since 2015, but still the issue is prevalent. i want to give an example of this. 2019 fare evasion citations is what you're looking at right now on the screen, 50% of those citations were issued to black riders, 20% to white riders, 15% to hispanic riders, 11% to other racial groups. bl
