♪ pqts as part of our effort to build a better bay area, we're focusing on bart all week. >> and they've been able to wissic people across the bay since the 1950s. >> news transportation reporter has a look. >> reporter: it may not have the postcard cachet of the famous bridges. but the transbay tube, with bart trains under the bay, at peek commute, built in the 1950s, it's what brought it together as regional system. soon that could be close to a choke point. they project the number of bay area commuters heading to san francisco could out strip the system's capacity and break the goal of getting commuters out of their cars.
11:16 pm
turns out there's more than just one potential solution on the table. there are seven different concepts. they're outlined in a new report called "crossings." the first two focus on traffic, building an all new bridge near the middle of the bay. the simplest idea essentially calls for a second parallel tube from oakland to san francisco's embarcadero. a second bart dub could not only carry passengers much faster but connect to a new tunnel proposed for mission street. that would definitely relieve some of the pressure but on the current market street line. >> exiting people up to the street level. so any new tube would be to relieve some of the pressure. >> reporter: or what if it aimed south and possibly linking up at a third street station.
11:17 pm
imagine popping off bart near the warriors' new chase center. what if it took another track altogether, using the new crossing for additional rail to expand the transbay commute options. two of the plans focus on linking a tube with the rail line, creating an expanded rail system that can stretch from sacramento to sillicon valley and running san francisco's service into the law center. >> it would provide a one-seat ride. i hope that is part of any second crossing that happens with the bart tube. >> reporter: they say you could double up on a plan for a combination tube carrying bart and traditional rail essentially side by side or adding a separate lane in the tube for cars carrying cross bay traffic into san francisco. so, that's it.
11:18 pm
seven unique concepts for crossing the bay. you may be asking yourself how much does it cost to dream this big? anywhere from 10 to $100 billion. the transportation essential for driving one of the most dynamic economies is a bridge or tube you may have to cross yet again in the near future. abc 7 news. >> bart planners told us they're working to up the rider efi efficiency by 45%. >> part of that calls for more bart cars linked to a computer management system. >> you can find all the stories on our website, abc 7 news.com. the moment, let's turn our attention to the weekend forecast. >> why does it feel like 80 degrees? why is it 80 degrees. >> but it is february.
