to building a better bay area we are focusing on b.a.r.t. all this week. >> a new study finds the number of commuters coming into san francisco may soon exceed b.a.r.t.'s capacity, to talk about a possible solution of the problem we're bringing in jobina fortson. this could be a real issue for people trying to get into work. >> the transbay tube has enabled b.a.r.t. to whisk people across the bay since the 1960s but it may also hold the key to other commute challenges we're facing right now. it may not have the postcard cache of the famous bridges, but the transbay tube whisks b.a.r.t. trains under the bay at peak commute. built in the mid 1960s,s the ke thatind b.a.r.t. together as a true regional system. soon that link could be closer to a choke point. studies predict in about a decade or so, the number ofansc system's capacity and threaten the goal of getting commuters out of their cars. so what to do about the commute
5:16 am
crush? turns out there's more than just one potential solution on the table. there are seven different concepts, even a whirlwind tour could make a commuter breathless. they're outlined in a report called crossings. the first two plans focus on speeding car traffic by widening bridges or building a new bridge near the middle of the bay. but the rest dive into the bay itself. the simplest idea calls for a second parallel tube from oakland to san francisco's embarcadero. a second b.a.r.t. tube could not only carry passengers much faster but potentially connect to a new tunnel proposed for mission street. now that would definitely relieve some of the pressure put on the current market street line. >> clorowding on the platform exiting people up to the street level. >> what if that second tube aimed south instead, possibly linking up in a new 3rd street

station and the fast growing south of market neighborhood in mission bay. imagine popping off b.a.r.t. near the warriors new chase center. then again, what if the new transbay tube took another track altogether using the new crossing for traditional rail to expand the bay area's transbay commute options beyond bart. two of the concept plans focus on a tube linking caltrain with the capital corridor rail lines creating an expanded rail system that could stretch from sacramento to silicon valley and running san francisco service into the new sales force transit center. beckley law professor ethan alkine studies transportation issues. >> it would provided a one-seat ride. i hope that's part of any second crossing that happens with the b.a.r.t. tube. >> for a few bucks more, they say you could even double up on a plan for a combination tube carrying b.a.r.t. and t traditional rail essentially side by side or adding a separate lane in the tube for

cars carrying cross bay traffic into san francisco. that's it, seven unique concepts for crossing the bay. you might ask how much does it toss to dream this big? anywhere from 10 billion to 1$10 billion. but transportation is essential for driving one of the nation's most dynamic economies is a bridge or tube we may have to cross yet again in the near future. the crossing study was put together by the metropolitan transportation commission and association of bay area governments. b.a.r.t. planners told us they're working on a core capacity project that could up the transbay system's rider efficiency by 45%. part of that solution calls for hundreds of additional b.a.r.t. cars linked to a more powerful commuter management system. we dedicated our building a better bay area coverage this week to b.a.r.t. you can find all these stories en bsabc7newsom>> t we'll have to make changes at
