that over 150,000 adolescents -- that's kids between the ages of 13 and 17 -- in the united states identify as transgender. this number does not include kids under the age of 13. now, you know a lot of celebrities have spoken out on this topic. charlize theron, for example, cynthia nixon, warren beatty and annette bening, his wife, as well as cher -- they've all come out publicly about their journey with their own children. most recently former nba star dwyane wade released his espn documentary "d-wade: life unexpected" featuring a video of his 12-year-old daughter zaya. it sparked a national conversation. here's a look at it. >> what's the point in being on this earth if you're gonna try to be someone you're not? it's like you're not even living as yourself. it's just, like, the dumbest concept to me. it's just like, you know, be true and don't really care what, like, the "stereotypical" way of, like, being you is. >> so i, along with so many other people, tweeted in

response a positive message. i tweeted back zaya is very brave, and that's an understatement. i said she's 12 years old, mature. and she's amazing, and i talked to my team, and we wanted to dive into this in a modern and open way. dwyane wade has said that there are so many other families raising transgender children. and our first guest is a mom who is helping us understand what it's like for those families. she's an advocate, activist, and author of "the bold world," jodie patterson. she's raising a transgender son named penelope. take a look. >> penel is my third child, and we assumed girl, like, perfectly anatomically perfect girl. everything looked in order. really early on, there were signs that penel is very different. something was weighing on penelope really, really heavy. every time we would try to put clothing on him or dress him or bathe him, there was, like, an intense reaction to his body

from himself. once penelope started to speak, it was like, "i'm not a baby." that's one of the first sentences. "i'm not a baby." and "no." it was like no to clothing, no to shoes, no to hair brushing. and so one day i remember pulling penelope aside and being like, "you know, what's really wrong, baby? like, why are you so upset?" and penelope said, "well, because everyone thinks i'm a girl." >> please welcome jodie, and penel is now 12 years old. >> almost 13. >> 13? >> almost 13. >> almost 13. >> as they always say. >> that's what kids say. jodie, i have to tell you. my anxiety level on this show right now is out of the roof. >> so is mine. >> because i know what people are going to tweet. i know what they're going to say. you live this every day. your child came to yout girl." >> mm-hmm. "the monster's coming to get me, mama." refusing dressing, refusing hair brushing. any touch to the body was rejected. i thought that i hadn't loved enough, so i tried to love more, longer naps, better food, everything a mom would do. >> all of this in the first two years of this child on the planet. >> and i have five children, so temper tantrums don't bother me, but this was something different. penelope was heavy. penelope was anxious. penelope said, "mama, i don't want tomorrow to come." >> now, you know people will say, "okay, come on, a 2-year-old? there's no way a 2-year-old knows their body, knows who they are, so maybe this was something
