travel, what does that mean for your vacation? >> 7 on your side's michael finney is here with tips and deals. michael? >> and joining me is leana corwin. she is from the travel app hopper. okay. we've got to start with coronavirus. are people cancelling a lot of trips? are we seeing that? >> you know, we're seeing a lot of people who had travel plans to affected areas attempt to cancel their trips. and what's great is a lot of airlines have been responding with waiving those cancellation and change fees. so if you're planning to go somewhere that's been impacted, definitely reach out to your airline and see if will is something you can do to change those plans. >> american airlines, i think i saw they said you could book anywhere and cancel it, right? >> yes. and we've been seeing that from a couple of different airlines saying if you book in the next two weeks and then your destination gets impacted by coronavirus, then we'll waive that cancellation fee. so i think because there is so much uncertainty right now, airlines are very understnding of that. but they don't want to inhibit people from makingserips because right now we just don't
4:48 pm
know. the cdc has only limited travel to a few destinations that have been hit by the virus. so at this point, i don't think we want to stop travel if we don't have to. >> so basically, they're figuring better to let you book and potentially cancel. otherwise you just won't book? >> exactly. one thing that we're seeing right now is international travel demand is down by about 5%. but interestingly, domestic travel has grown in the past two months. so since the international travel demand has dropped, we've seen a lot of people turning to the u.s., especially when it comes to spring break. >> china people are avoiding. any place else? how about italy? i hear -- it was so funny. i there was a headline saying the rich are escaping the coronavirus by going to italy. what? >> yeah. so italy unfortunately right now the cdc is saying if you do ess avoid it as a destination. it's the only place in europe that they're recommending avoiding right now.
4:49 pm
>> okay. >> but that did move up in kind of the watch list in recent days. >> okay. so let's talk about spring break. because if everything is going to be okay, or at least you're going book it now to see what you're going to do. >> definitely. >> i guess there is probably some deals then, right? if traffic is going away. >> we're definitely seeing a lot of deals. and to domestic destinations too, especially buzz of that demand. so too los angeles, san diego, if you want to stay nearby. we're only seeing prices around 120, $130 round trip, which is going to be cheaper than your gas if you decide to drive instead. so that's great. if you want to get away for more spring skiing, we're seeing flights to denver and salt lake city, around $1830 round trip. an these prices are for really when schools are on their spring break. so if you want to do a family getaway, those are the deals for that kind of end of march spring
4:50 pm
break time. >> we keep talking about airlines. how about are hotels cutting some deals? i assume cruise ships are. >> so interestingly, cruise lines are what we're seeing is that sometimes they're offering if they're cancelling a trip, they're actually offering to reimburse you and give you another cruise at a discount. so we've seen that kind of anecdotally, though hopper's data really looks at flights and hotels. on the hotel side of things, we're seeing a lot of deals to those destinations i recommended flying to as well. and in the hopper app, you can actually now check out deals to hotels using kind of this heat map that we have. so if you look at y whichys gng heavily discounted than others. that can help you plan your trip when it comes to hotels. >> from the hopper app, it looks pretty cool, leana corwin, thanks for joining us. >> thank you so much. >> thank you, michael.

>> and it feels like spring outside. >> it sure does. spencer christian is tracking the forecast. >> for a couple more days we have spring-like conditions. the wind is quite strong. a wind advisory in effect for the north bay mountains and east bay hills until 4:00 a.m. low temperatures mainly in the mid- to upper 40s. tomorrow another sunny and mild day with highs ranging from mid-60s a the coast to low 70s around the bay to mid and upper 70s inland. and the accuweather seven-day forecast looks like this. it gets even warmer on wednesday with some inland locations likely to approach 80 degrees as a high. cooling starts on thursday. there will be further cooling on friday with an increase in clouds. breezy on saturday with a chance of rain. and don't forget to spring forward to daylight savings time saturday night into sunday. a forecast with a little something for everyone. >> thanks, spencer. we remain dry in the bay area, but snow fell in the sierra and southern california over the weekend. check out the scene at squaw valley alpine meadows yesterday. while there was a storm, the

highways are now clear of snow. there is a chance for more, though, later this week. and check this out. that's a real home in upstate new york covered in ice. encased in it in fact. according to the national weather service, 48 hours of gale-force winds and freezing water from lake erie encased some homes in the town of hamburg in ice. in some cases several feet of ice. while some residents thought the scene was beautiful and surreal, they wouldn't want to live through that again. it's amazing the house can support all that weight. from lawyer to legos. >> i left the law firm behind to make a full-time job playing with toys. >> the art show that's about both science and fun. >> and kristen is here with what's coming up on abc7 at 5:00. >> wrong day to crash. the trading app that went down on the day's stock markets rebounded. touch screen voting. crowds of people preparing for tomorrow's election in the age of coronavirus. and the horse that went off

and i would come home at night and i would need some sort of creative outlet. i started experimenting with lego. eventually decided you know what? i'm going make a career out of this. and i left the law firm behind to make a full-time job playing with toys. >> fourth graders from the science center school showed us the interactive part of the exhibit, the science of the brick, nine activity stations. so what are you all going to make? >> i'm going to make -- >> make a palace. >> you would expect a tyrannosaurus rex at a science exhibit, but perhaps not one made from 80,000 bricks, or a mastive easter island head. this exhibit has been around the world, inspiring imagination and wonder. >> the mission of the california science center is to inspire curiosity and science learning. so we often like to do this by showing people science in their everyday life, including the toys they play with. >> yellow is nathan's best known sculpture where the bricks

almost have motion and curves. >> that's kind of the magic of using lego bricks. i create things made out of just rectangles, just right angles, sharp corners. you back away from the sculptures and you see all the corners blend into curves. >> the exhibit is open through labor day, and it's for anyone who is still playing with legos, and for any adult who may still have a lego-shaped imprint on the bottom of their foot. adrian alpert, abc7 news. >> that's so incredible. so far there is no word about the exhibition coming to the bay area, but you can check it out in southern california through labor day weekend. and you can get the latest news any time with the abc7 news app. it has enhanced live video features, more customization, and personalized push alerts. get more of the news you want delivered to your phone in realtime that is going to do it for this edition of abc7 news at 4:00. thank you so much for joining us today. i'
