county. but health officials remind the community the situation could get worse before it gets better. >> if we begin to see widespread community transmission, we kind of go back to typical flu recommendations which is if you're ill, stay home. if you see a student or a faculty member that is ill, ask them to go home. before you go and see your doctor, particularly with coronavirus, you want to call ahead for some instructions. >> laura anthony, abc7 news. >> health agencies have been promoting hand washing to protect against the coronavirus. however, touch screen voting being used in several bay area counties on super tuesday has raised concerns about contamination. david louie shows us what preventative measures are being used in santa clara county. >> anyone going to any of the county's 110 centers and then voters have the choice of a paper ballot or a touch screen. the registrar of voters is mindful that the spread of the
5:09 pm
coronavirus has voters worried about contamination. >> when people walk in they're hand sanitizing. when they get to the screen, they're giving them a wipe so they can wipe it down if they have concerns. >> the challenge with electronic voting is there are a lot of services to touch, such as the touch screen itself, or if you're hearing impaired, using headphones or even the controller itself would need to be wiped down. each center has been issued bottles of hand sanitizer and bags with single use wipes. some are even sanitized the electronic data cards that voters are given. second time voter amalie okuna said she didn't know who used the screen ahead of her. >> in the place a lot of people. and of course we have to be careful that that's where the virus can be spread. >> although this voting had the branch library had been issued wipes, they couldn't find them, even after digging through supplies. at the martin luther king state
5:10 pm
library had plenty. for those still concerned, san jose mayor sam liccardo pointed out there are other options. >> it's easy to vote by mail. you can change the world. alternatively, you can come down to a voting center and drop off your ballot there. >> and the drop-off ballot boxes are outdoors and accessible on a 24-hour basis. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. coming up, the race for president, the candidate that is dropping out. phil matier says all of it makes super tuesday. >> plus watching and waiting. the voters making sure their decisions really count. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. warm winds today brought about record temps in some spots, and we're not done with the warm weather yet. we'll have the numbers in the accuweather coming up. >> thanks. you can't help but think of the old saying, you can lead a horse to water. we'l vo: in life, there are talkers and there are doers. mike bloomberg has spent his life getting things done. started a company from scratch,
5:11 pm
creating 20,000 good paying jobs. that's getting it done. as mayor, he rebuilt a shaken city after 9/11, created over 450,000 jobs. expanded healthcare to 700,000 and raised teacher pay. elected for three terms because he got things done. mike beat the nra, strengthening gun laws. he beat big coal, closing over 300 dirty coal fired plants. mike is still getting things done. so ask yourself. for president, do you want a debater or a doer? someone with workable, common sense plans to fix healthcare and create jobs, who's done both. mike has the record and resources to beat trump. and it will take both. but mike will get it done. bloomberg: i'm mike bloomberg and i approve this message.
5:12 pm
we choose to go to the and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. president kennedy knew settling for half-measures wasn't good enough. so when candidates say we can't guarantee health care for all, make college affordable for all, combat climate change, or create a world at peace, remember that america is best when we strive to do big things, even when it's hard. i'm bernie sanders and i approve this message. a man who threatened a mass

5:14 pm
carolina. he's now onlyix deger tuesday. so it's close. abc7 news political analyst and san francisco kron crawl insider phil matier talked about why the weekend was so important for biden. >> it all comes down to south carolina and the african american vote. they were looking for that as a cue. he did okay in iowa, but who is in iowa. he did okay in new hampshire. now it starts rolling into the more populous states. that's where the decision is made. it would be fascinating if we had one more week before super tuesday to see what happens. but this is going to be like the last two minutes of a game halfway through. >> phil's column appears in the "san francisco chronicle" on wednesdays and sundays. >> just getting word that beto o'rourke will also endorse biden. five democrats are still in the race. biden, former new york city mayor michael bloomberg, tulsi gabbard, vermont senator bernie sanders and new hampshire senator elizabeth warren. now if you have already voted by

mail for klobuchar, buttigieg, or another candidate who has dropped out, your vote still counts for them, but you don't get a do-over. but in a tweet, the california secretary of state says, quote, if a voter has filled out their ballot but has not actually turned it in, they can take that ballot with them to the polls and surrender it for a new one and vote for somebody else who is still on the ballot. californians have been able to vote for a month, but early voting numbers are actually way down. >> i just want to make a quick correction. i said new hampshire senator elizabeth warren. she is of course from massachusetts. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has that story from san francisco. >> the voting center in san francisco's city hall is definitely fully staffed, but here we are the day before the election, and workers are doing a lot of standing around. >> now there is a full contingent here waiting to do work, and there is no one here.
5:16 pm
there are five other people that are voting. i was shocked. >> officials in san francisco say they have had to pull back some of their staffing because reality has not met their expectations. >> it has been slower than we expected. so far around 4,000 people have voted early here at city hall. and then we received around 85,000 by mail and we expect to get around 115 to this point. >> waiting has its advantages. pete buttigieg and tom steyer dropped out of the race over the weekend. senator amy klobuchar dropped out today. voters who selected them cannot get their ballots back. >> it's a done deal. >> the announcements impacted these voters who said they filled out their ballots on saturday. they came here this morning to ask for new ballots. polling workers here in san francisco say it has picked up today. so it does look like people waded through the weekend to watch how things were going to pan out before making up their mind. in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news.
