11:00 pm
now, news to build a better bay area from abc7. >> they don't call it super tuesday for nothing. but tonight i tell you with absolute confidence we are going to win the democratic nomination. [ cheers and applause ] >> a reinvigorated joe biden was the comingback kid of super tuesday. but it was bernie sanders who won california. >> voters in 14 states and one u.s. territory went to the polls today with a third of all delegates up for grabs. >> here in california sanders is leading with 30% of the vote. the "associated press" has called the race for him. but it's not clear how many delegates sanders will claim from california. there are 415 delegates up for grabs in california. senator sanders won four states
11:01 pm
this super tuesday, along with california he won his home state of vermont, no surprise. plus, colorado and utah. >> former vice president joe biden built on his very recent momentum out of south carolina with strong showings in eastern and southern super tuesday states. he notched wins in alabama, arkansas, massachusetts, minnesota, and north carolina, oklahoma, tennessee, and virginia, and just moments ago the ap declared biden the winner in texas. >> michael bloomberg won the democratic caucuses in american samoa taking at least four of the six delegates. >> and right now there is just one state too close to call. tat would be maine. >> here's a look at how the delegates shake out right now. former vice president joe biden is leading 1991 delegates are needed to capture the nomination. california has more than 400 delegates. not all of them have yet been given out. the final tally won't be sorted out until all of the late arriving ballots are counted.
11:02 pm
>> a state he won, sanders criticized his democratic rivals without naming them. >> tonight i tell you with absolute confidence we are going to win[ cheers and applause ] and we are going to defeat the most dangerous president in the history of this country. [ cheers and applause ] >> he also promoted himself as putting together a, quote, unprecedented grassroots multigenerational, multiracial movement. >> meantime, joe biden followed up his win in south carolina. he delivered a passionate speech to a crowd in los angeles. >> when he means uniting america, not sowing seeds of division and anger and hate. we need a president who can fight, but make no mistake about
11:03 pm
it, i can fight. but, look, we need as badly someone who can heal. >> protesters trying to interrupt the speech, but his wife pushed one of them before they reached the former vice president. here's a closer look you can see joe biden stepping in between her husband and the protester shoving her away as security responds. i was watching it live, and she reacted very quickly. >> paid in cash. [ applause ] >> vice president biden made a last-minute campaign stop in oakland this morning at a family-owned diner. biden worked his way through buttercup diner chatting with patrons and even sitting down in booths to take some selfies. >> michael bloomberg spoke to his supporters tonight in florida. >> he pledged to beat president trump. >> no matter how many delegates we have won tonight, we have done something no one else thought was possible. in just three months we've gone
11:04 pm
from 1% of the polls to being a contender for the democratic nomination for president. >> elizabeth warren is teetering on the edge tonight, not a good day for her. she finished in third place in her home state of massachusetts. earlier today she spoke to supporters in detroit. >> this is our moment to choose hope over fear. this is our moment to choose courage over cynicism. this is our moment to dream big, fight hard, and win. [ cheers and applause ] >> well, warren hasn't won any state yet. she did get enough support to cross the 15% threshold to qualify for delegates, however. >> and we have a running ticker of the key races and the results on the bottom of your screen right now. >> and that includes results from the primaries, state offices, county and city elections, as well as measures and propositions. >> in the south bay, santa clara county had a new voting system, and it did create some confusion. >> let's go to abc7 news
11:05 pm
reporter amanda dell cask illa with that story. >> reporter: this was all part of that new voting system here in santa clara county. i'm going to step out of the way because we are here at the register's office where workers are busy waiting on those last three voting centers to come through. they are bringing in bag after bag of ballots. earlier today there was a small crowd of people trickling into the rotunda here. officials say these short lines were likely the results of the county's new voting system that we were talking about. registered voters were allowed to either mail in their ballots or go to any polling location across the county. san jose state was the busiest polling locations with wait times ranging from one hour to three hours depending on the time of day. now young voters there say dedication kept them in line, and they are looking forward to change. >> especially when it comes to student tuition, when it comes to santa clara housing, when it
11:06 pm
comes to healthcare. these are things that my generation is going to have to pick up the tab octobern. >> i think we're finally going to change things. there are a lot of old opinions in the government. there are a lot of older people in the senate, older presidents. i think it's time to bring some younger opinions, more up to date with the way the world in now and bring them into the public's opinion. >> a lot of people encouraged me to go and vote. i personally was not trying to vote because of the political climate. but i was like i need to. >> of course while polls closed at 8:00 tonight, there is still plenty of work left on this super tuesday here at the santa clara county register's office, they are waiting on three more voting centers to come through. i'm reporting live in san jose, abc7 news. >> okay, amanda, thank you. in the east bay, many voted at the last minute, which caused some massive lines in oakland. >> cornell bernard is live
11:07 pm
there. >> reporter: no official numbers from alameda county yet. but by all accounts here voter turnout was strong. a large number of voters came to cast their ballots, some at the very last minute. check this out. hundreds of people were standing in line before the doors closed at 8:00 p.m. lots of people doing same-day registration, something new in california this year. outside a long line of cars for a drive-through ballot drop off. many people got off work and voted here. others voted at their local polling place. >> polls are about to close. >> wfd to rush down here so we made sure we put our ballots in. >> today the parking lot was full, which is surprising. california voters tend tomorrow a little bit lackadaisical when it comes to primaries, but it's the presidential election year.
11:08 pm
>> in contra costa county, there was a steady stream of voters all day. the polling supervisors said some people surrounded their mail-in ballot and requested a new one because their candidate had dropped out of the race. we also saw lots of hand sanitizer at polling places today due to fears of coronavirus. we are live in oakland tonight, abc7 news. and it wasn't just here in the bay area. take a look at this video in los angeles. a massive line snaking around buildings from earlier tonight. voters waited for hours just to cast their ballots. >> and this is the first time in a long time california voters went to the polls this early in the year. >> abc7 news reporter kate larson is at a democratic watch party in san mateo. >> reporter: the san mateo democratic party doesn't have an official endorsement. i spoke to many of the members tonight who really supported candidates across the ballot. so a little disagreement there. but everyone was very excited to
11:09 pm
be voting in this early super tuesday march election. >> you know, i started out a big kamala harris fan, and i've always been a joe biden fan. i've had the pleasure of meeting him several times. i am currently backing elizabeth warren. but i'm voting blue no matter who in november. >> i am surprised to hear in my groups of friends that i thought were more progressive shift towards biden because they see the one that can beat donald trump. >> regardless of who the democratic nominee is, if we don't flip the senate blue and we don't keep the house blue, it doesn't matter, nobody can pass the legislation whether it's climate change or immigration reform or healthcare. >> and also keep in mind that there are still a lot of vote by mail ballots to count. so even though bernie sanders is projected to win california, we do know that the ballot can be impacted.
11:10 pm
lauren martinez has been at a republican watch party along the embarcadero. >> reporter: that was a pretty good turnout upstairs here at the waterfront restaurant. republican members tell me they will be keeping a close eye on the congressional race. now chair of the san francisco republican party john dennis is running against nancy pelosi and four others. executive director clint grease tells me it's the second place they are fighting for. he says pelosi has been absent on speaking on san francisco's problems like homelessness and street conditions. he says she's been focused on national issues like impeachment. >> we're really counting on his victory tonight so that we'll have eight more months of drawing san franciscan's attentions to nancy pelosi's failures. >> reporter: now san francisco republicans tell me they feel like they have momentum going into november, and membership is
11:11 pm
up here in san francisco. reporting live offyou, lauren. abc7 news contributor and chronicle insider phil matir says even after tonight things are still fairly wide open. >> reporter: this is still very much a race in california and the rest of the country. we've seen surges by former vice president joe biden, former new york mayor michael bloomberg, bernie sanders holding strong. but nobody is racking up numbers of 40 and 50%. no one is running the table either in california or in the country. they're all going to have to divide the delegates, and that's going to make for one heck of a convention in milwaukee this summer. >> and as always we have full election results for each race and ballot measure up on our website right now, abc7news.com and on the abc7 news app. >> a lot more to bring you. new cases of the coronavirus in the bay area tonight as another county declares a state of emergency. i'm meteorologist drew tuma.
